Biased Polls -- College Professors Supposedly Too Liberal, Anti-Reagan

COMMENTARY | According to The Daily Caller, college professors don't think as highly of our 40th president, Ronald Reagan, as they should. Out of 284 professors, only 16 percent identified themselves as politically conservative and only 40 percent included Reagan among their list of the top 10 presidents. By contrast, a 2011 Gallup poll found Americans are most likely to say that Reagan was the greatest president, with almost 20 percent of respondents naming him number one.

I like Ronald Reagan but find this witch-hunt against "uber-liberal" college profs to be insulting, and misguided.

First of all, how were these 284 college professors selected? If one wants to skew data to demonize professors as liberals, they could poll 284 professors at liberal arts, fine arts and performing arts colleges in liberal areas such as New York and San Francisco to guarantee a higher percentage of nonconservative academics. Were any of the colleges and universities in conservative areas such as west Texas?

Second, there have been a lot of presidents. Forty-four so far. Who is to say there are not 10 former presidents likely to be ranked superior to Reagan? Reagan, after all, was not without scandal nor controversy such as the notorious Iran-Contra affair. Perhaps America's first several presidents got high marks as being Founding Fathers and all, then others like Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy rounded out the rest.

Simply put, if you know all your presidents it's not hard to find 10 good ones from before the 1980s.

Finally, contrasting the opinion of professors, many of whom are likely to be far savvier in terms of historical knowledge than the general public, with that of a mass poll of laymen is misleading. The public might name Reagan as the best president because he is one of the few names they know.

As a world history teacher I can count on one hand how many presidents most of my students can name. Maybe the general public names Reagan as best commander-in-chief because they always show '80s Cold War flicks like Red Dawn and Top Gun on TV and '80s-retro is a popular genre.

I like Reagan, but the poll is too misleading.

I'm curious why you or anyone else would put Andrew Jackson in the top 10 presidents in our history. Please read up on Jackson's response to Worcester vs. Georgia, the Indian Removal Act, and the Trail of Tears and then try and say with a straight face that Jackson was one of our country's greatest leaders. I'm not even Native American, and I find that sentiment incredibly offensive.
      • Psyclops 3 mths ago
You're quite correct Nathan, Andrew Jackson was the "Father of Ethnic Cleansing".

College professors are liberals. Hmm. This is a news flash?

Of course a professor is going to denounce something he does not agree with

WHAT KIND OF MORE ON WROTE THAT?????????????

I know, it's impossible to be "too liberal" just as it is impossible to be "too rich".
      • Upbeat99 3 mths ago
The GOP today would label Reagan as "uber-liberal" over some of his policies. $165 billion bailout of Social Security, burgeoning deficits ("The national debt doesn't matter"-RR), no action on abortion. dramatically increased the size of government, raised taxes on the rich. That all seems to have been re-written.

Why is Reagan's being rated in the "top 10" even important? I think he was the beginning of the end for the middle class with his policies of deregulation, union busting, "trickle down" and "supply side" economics, and wasted money on the "War on Drugs".
    • Anonymous  •  Green Bay, Wisconsin  •  3 mths ago
eh, like usual its just a poll designed to tell people "you were right all along". Its just a feel-good thing, not based on any kind of reality.

yea - we should all revere ronnie -
just don't pay attention to his gun/missiles to iran for hostages & lying about it then getting caught - or his cocaine smuggling for the money to overthrow sovereign govts -
or abandoning our dead marines in the middle east - or claiming to end communism when it collapsed on its own -
reagan was a brain dead clown that raised taxes & had worse stats than most presidents
just a grade C actor that appealed to the brain dead voters that confuse fantasy with reality -
it goes along with the xian cult worshippers philosophy of supreme beings !
      hero worship of sorts !!

There are not enough schools teaching finance, accounting and business law. Far too many teaching sociology, psychology and pottery making.
      • Tony 3 mths ago
This is a free market society - schools sell what their students want to buy. If more Americans want to study sociology than accounting then that is what our colleges and universities will provide.

        Kite flying 101, anyone?
      • Henry B T 3 mths ago
@ TONY - Our education system is far from a free-market. Schools sell what serves their agenda. Liberals orchestrated the takeover of our education system when the Board of Education was created. That's the pivotal time when our schools took a turn for the worse and began pushing liberal arts education over math and science, because it allowed Leftists to indoctrinate susceptible minds. The college students are the reason we have a Leftist President today and the majority of educators are responsible for the moral decline of our society by teaching women they can be men, and men that they can be women and still expect to be treated as everyone else.

hmmm.. wonder what this commenter history professor ranks woodrow wilson, fdr, and the great society man himself lbj? Id like to bet this is one of those uber college profesors himself, prolly places the racist wilson higher than Ronald like they all seem to.. but they wont mention how racist wilson was in their giddyness to extoll how great he was.. unbiased my #$%$..who are ten.. lincoln, washington.. if you say jfk then you gotta place ron in there because he finished what jfk continued with the soviet union. Or does finally taking care of that not rate in the top ten? seeing how the vietnam war escalated and the great society has failed.. lbj should not be anywhere near the top ten list. So who are the top ten better than ron..fdr did the exact same thing the mesiah has done, prolonged the depression. (do you wonder why we had two mini depressions in the 20;s they dont teach anymore.. of course not, we got out of those quickly and republican presidents were over those depressions we only teach how great fdr was..)

The USSR was still there when Reagan left office......
The Russians are now our friends ?? Exactly what has changed other than Reagan tripled the national debt, and had the most criminally indicted administration in US history.

I am a conservative and educated and an educator. I believe in paying my bills and that one does not live off borrowed moeny and that is what makes me a conservative. Ronald Reagen was FACTUALY a borrow and spend president and that makes him fiscally irresponsible. I can easly name a lot better presidents than that based on conservative creteria. This poll is not measuringg the quaitiy of the president Reagen but insted the gap in the correct use of the word consevative.

I've seen plenty of uneducated, smart people. Your education doesn't start or stop at your school's front door. You want to get more education? Read. It's all around you. If people aren't educating themselves, it's their own #$%$ fault.

I've always been amused by the concept of RR as a conservative. He was deeply involved in union activities as an actor. He lived through the same California dream as the Brown family. He was Hollywood all the way. As POTUS he oversaw a huge expansion of government and held sway by virtue of personality not substance. He surrounded himself with conservatives, but made decisions based on personal beliefs. As a Michigan Republican, I'm used to this kind of 'conservative'. George Romney was a RINO, as he had to be to get elected in a union state, and Mitt will have to be to get elected this year. You just can't beat the media at their own game, learned when they beat Nixon against JFK and threw away Goldwater with one TV ad.

Survey shows that college professors are indeed smart ones, and most people are dummies.

Ronald Reagan is a hero to some and the devil to others. People who have studied history (like myself) who attended college during the Reagan years (like myself) and consider the impact that Reagan and his policies had on urban America and the polarizing of minority groups will not view him as "great" or "wonderful," but as a very outspoken racist with a lot of contempt for the working class and unions. Others who were unaffected by his racism and right-wing policies will remember him for the fall of the Berlin Wall and his nostalgic appeal to middle America for a "return" to "the way things were," (ie.before civil rights and the women's movement and the anti-war demonstrations of the previous decades) It wasn't until I saw Michael Moore's documentary "Sicko" that I learned how very afraid a young Reagan really was that communists were going to take over America (starting with the Screen Actor's Guild, apparently) and how he recorded a phonographic record extolling the evils of "socialized medicine," (which was actually a very good description of America's HMO's (before Obama's new rules) rather than Europe or Canada's socialized health care system, btw) Conservatives have always believed that the civil rights movement, (with it's underlying principle of the equality of the races) was a "communist inspired" movement. Reagan too believed that Dr. King, and other civil rights leaders were communist, even though King was a Christian minister, which would seem to contradict the atheism of communism. It is no wonder that when the whole world was appealing for the end of the wicked apartheid system in South Africa, and for US sanctions, Reagan could not have cared less, those ANC folks were communists too. Reagan was more comfortable supporting fascist dictatorships in South Africa, the Phillippines, and Haiti, than the democratic movements struggling to overthrow them.

"For the last 30 years he's been in a dream world.... I think he actually believes that giving more to rich people will make them work harder, whereas the only way to make poor people work is to tax their unemployment benefits."

"Reagan, who more than any president in history railed against government benefits and spending, set the standard for all members of his administration. In addition to his presidential pension of $99,500 a year for life and his annual pension as a former governor of California of $30,800...he received Secret Service protection from forty full-time agents and other security at a cost to the government estimated at $10 million annually, more than double that of other living presidents. A suite of offices atop a new thirty-four-story office building twenty minutes from his home, commanding a view that extended from the Pacific Ocean to the towers of downtown Los Angeles, cost the government $173,000 a year to lease."

Of course, what is the value of a public opinion pool about historical events. It is well know that the general public lacks respect towards knowledge (at least the half of the population that are below average and maybe a little more than half0. Knowledge about History and other disciplines is gained by going to school... studying.. not drinking and partying... so even among the people who went to college that information might be missing. Thus, no wonder, a poll about the best president might be misleading. It is like asking the general public what they think about nuclear energy, dinosaurs, evolution, ghosts, big foot, UFOs. You will get an opinion but mostly an uninformed opinion.
