WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden has canceled three appearances Thursday in Rhode Island and Maine, opting to stay in Houston while his son prepares to be discharged from a top cancer center.
Biden and his wife, Jill, said that their son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, had a successful procedure Tuesday and would return to Delaware after being discharged from the hospital on Thursday. The White House wouldn't say what kind of procedure doctors performed.
"He is in great shape," the Bidens said in a brief statement.
The vice president was scheduled to travel Thursday to Rhode Island to attend a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee and an event at Salve Regina University, and to Maine to headline a fundraiser for New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan. The White House said Wednesday that Biden will not attend any of those events.
"Vice President Biden is absolutely right to be with his son and family during this difficult time," Hassan said.
Biden is still scheduled to join President Barack Obama in Scranton, Pa., on Friday during the second day of Obama's bus tour, said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.
The vice president has been in Texas since Monday, when he accompanied his son to Houston for testing at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
The younger Biden had felt weak and disoriented last week and was admitted to a Chicago-area hospital, then consulted with physicians in Philadelphia before seeking out treatment at the prestigious cancer center. Authorities said that weeks earlier emergency responders were called to the home where Beau Biden was staying following a 911 call saying that someone was possibly having a stroke and apparently not alert.
Beau Biden, 44, suffered a mild stroke in 2010.
