Big Hero 6 Blu-ray Review

Big Hero 6 was a movie we immediately fell in love with. I ended up seeing it a couple times in theaters and had no problem watching it yet again on Blu-ray. The movie had a lot of heart and emotion with some really great characters. It pretty much hit all the marks when it comes to an all-age movie. There was plenty of fun an action for the entire family. Some parts of the story might feel a little predictable but there are still enough twists and excitement to entertain everyone.

We won't go fully into what made the movie work. You can read our full review HERE. It's no surprise the movie won an Oscar this past weekend for Best Animated Feature. If that wasn't enough, the movie featured an animated short that played before the movie started in theaters. The short, Feast, also won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. That means you're getting two Oscar-winning movies in one package.

The movie looked great in theaters and you can really see the graphics shine on the Blu-ray. The picture quality is superb. There is simply a lot to see, more on that later. You'll want to pause the movie at different moments check out all the detail in the different scenes.

What about the Bonus Features?

Theatrical Short: Feast (6:13) This movie will help you get in tune with your emotions before you watch Big Hero 6. It's a simple story, like most the shorts are, but it's pretty powerful.

The Origin Story of Big Hero 6: Hiro’s Journey (15:10) Baymax warns that there will be spoilers in this segment. Obviously watch after you’ve sen the movie. Jamie Chung (Go Go) hosts. We hear from Don Hall (director), Chris Williams (director), Roy Conli (producer), Paul Briggs , the writers and others. There's looks at locations in San Francisco. Joe Quesada and Jeph Loeb helped guide the story from a Marvel Comic into a Disney Animated film by adding more of the element of Hiro’s brother. Loeb mentions how at Marvel, they write a script and shoot it. John Lasseter and his team really dive in and work through elements over and over along the way until they get what they want. They looked at upcoming technology to figure out Baymax’s design. A lot of time was spent thinking about Hiro’s first flight scene with Baymax. There’s talk on designing the city. Loeb talks about the feeling the of loss. How Hiro dealt with his brother’s death. Taking emotional ideas and helping people connect with them. “As long as we keep telling stories about the people that we lost, they will never go away.”

Big Animator 6: The Characters Behind the Characters (6:39) A talk with the animators. They discuss how where they got the ideas for little details in the character’s looks and moves. Some had brothers and put some of those things in there. There was also some look at the voice actors and what they added. Damon Waynes Jr changed Wasabi’s character a little. They had to make sure each character had their own way of moving about and carrying themselves. There's a lot of great insight here. It's too bad this wasn't longer, especially with the lack of actual commentary during the movie.

Deleted Scenes (13:10) Introductions by directors Don Hall and Chris Williams. There’s two alternate openings (one was a prologue), a scene with Yokai’s crew, and “Every Great Super Hero Origin Story Starts With a Grappling Hook.” They're all storyboard clips but gives you an idea of what could have been. You can also see, like with the prologue, how the clip would have changed the tone of the story.

Big Hero Six Theatrical Teaser (1:41) This is the simple trailer that first introduced us to this new world.

Big Hero Secrets (2:46) Who wants Easter Eggs? This feature is mentioned on the packaging and we saw a tiny clip for it before. When you check out the Bonus Features section, you’ll discover that this feature is NOT listed! Even if you check out every single other option, you won’t find it. It turns out the Secrets feature is just that, a bit of a secret. You won’t find it right away. Prince Hans and Olaf from Frozen, Disney Animation people, Wreck-It Ralph, lots of hidden Mickeys, as well as someTangled and Bolt Easter Eggs. Not everything is revealed. They claim there are more things to find and there’s no fun in simply telling us everything. We’re encouraged to go back and keep watching.

So where is this feature?

Go the Bonus Features section. Press up on your remote. You'll see a little Baymax appear on the menu. Press enter and the feature begins.

If you're a fan of animated movies, you'll definitely want this in your personal collection. Some more special features would have been nice but we do have some good things included. It's just a movie you can easily watch over and over. It's a great family movie with moments that do get a little dark and heavy.

You'll laugh and cry. And hopefully we'll get a sequel soon. Don't forget the after-the-credits scene if you missed it in theaters. The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack is now available. The movie is also available through Disney Movies Anywhere.
