    Big Mountain Drugs Responds to Consumer Alert on Ophthalmic Solutions

    The theft of a large quantity of ophthalmic medication has led the FDA and the pharmaceutical giant Novartis to issue a Consumer Alert.

    This follows a Consumer Alert from the FDA and major drug manufacturer Novartis. They are also advising consumers to check all such products for signs of tampering or damage prior to using them.

    The stolen products are mostly ophthalmic solutions and contact lens care products, and include Novartis, Alcon and Falcon brands. Alcon is a division of Novartis, and Falcon is a line of generic eye care products manufactured by the Sandoz division of Novartis. The eye medications were being delivered to a distribution centre when they went missing on July 18th. The stolen pharmaceuticals include both prescription and over the counter products.

    The Alcon press release warns consumers that an unusually low price may be an indication that a product is stolen, and that stolen medicine can be harmful as it may not have been stored at the right temperature or humidity. Products stored under improper conditions may degrade, lose potency, or become contaminated.

    The release also warns that their prescription products should only be used after consulting with a licensed eye care professional that can properly diagnose and treat eye diseases and conditions. One serious condition that requires regular treatment with prescription eye drops is glaucoma. Use of a glaucoma medication that has lost potency could result in a permanent loss of vision.
