Big Softie Harvey Weinstein Opens ‘Finding Neverland’ on Broadway At Last
When Harvey Weinstein throws a Broadway opening, Hollywood shows up.
There was Bryan Cranston, sporting a mustache and a full head of hair, chatting at intermission. Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford walked the red carpet too. Opening nighters could also spot Christoph Waltz, not to mention Anson Elgort and Olivia Wilde. Gloria Estefan, at work on a Broadway show of her own, made the rounds too.
They all turned up to see “Finding Neverland,” the passion project for Weinstein that, after a tumultuous road to New York, finally opened on Broadway April 15 in a production that stars Matthew Morrison and Kelsey Grammer. Weinstein joined the cast onstage to take a bow at the curtain call, alongside the rest of the musical’s creators.
Leave it to Harvey to go big. He couldn’t just debut one New York stage show this spring; he had to go and open two. “Neverland” followed on the heels of the Radio City Music Hall “New York Spring Spectacular,” which bowed last month. That’s given the Broadway crowd plenty of opportunity this spring to get to know Weinstein — especially “Neverland” director Diane Paulus, who worked on both projects.
“He’s passionate and he’s relentless, but you know what? So am I,” she said at the swank opening night party at the Metropolitan Club. “And he’s got this tough guy persona, but he’s such a softie at heart!”
