Bill Gates’ Charity Pledges to Donate $3 for Every World AIDS Day Snapchat Filter

Snapchats may disappear after a few seconds, but their benefits will be long lasting Tuesday to support World AIDS Day. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will donate $3 to the nonprofit (RED) for each use of a “World AIDS Day” geofilter on Snapchat, according to the LA Times.

While geofilters, which are like stickers, usually denote a location or event, companies can use them to advertise. Snapchat will distribute three geofilters for “World AIDS Day” Tuesday without charging (RED). The filters will say things like “Join the Fight.”

After 1 million geofilter uses, the Gates Foundation plans to close the donations, but the organization will contribute another $1 million to (RED) if a music video starring Scarlett Johansson, Barry Manilow and Jimmy Kimmel is shared more than 333,000 times.

While there’s no way to directly donate to (RED) through Snapchat, there will be other ways for users to contribute. (RED) co-founder Bono will launch a campaign Tuesday where donors can win “once-in-a-lifetime experiences” after contributing at least $10 to his organization.

Jimmy Kimmel is dedicating his Tuesday show to the (RED) SHOPATHON.

Guest appearances on the shopathon will include the night’s co-host Olivia Wilde, as well as Matt Damon and The Killers. The special episode will also feature sports stars Tom Brady, who is offering one donor lessons in spiraling a football, and Shaquille O’Neal, who will take a holiday card picture with one winner. Kimmel is also offering his own specialties to the fundraiser — he’s pledging to give someone’s kid “the talk.”

Other experiences include the chance to star in a Dubsmash video with the Backstreet Boys and a tour of the “Game of Thrones” set in Ireland.

Donations can be made through Omaze, and the campaign lasts through Jan. 21, 2016. The Gates Foundation will match every dollar raised up to $20 million.
