Bill Maher's Donation Shows What's Wrong with Election

COMMENTARY | As reported by The Ticket, comedian and talk-show host, Bill Maher, recently announced that he will be donating $1 million to the Super PAC that supports President Obama's reelection campaign.

While the man is certainly free to give his money to whatever cause he wants to give it to, certainly given the loopholes of campaigns as campaign finance laws are currently written, I think it is a strong example of one of the major ills of modern elections.

Elections have become less about who is best to lead this country and more about who is the most popular amongst those who have money and aren't afraid to buy a candidate via unlimited donations to Super PACs.

It's hard to believe that, in a country where so many people are living on the very edge of losing it all, someone would think that it's wise business to go on a broadcast show and announce that they're throwing their money into a political race. What is that money going to buy? Commercial spots? Handshake opportunities for a president who has a lot of work he needs to be doing back in Washington? More $1,000 per person dinners?

Admittedly, I don't appreciate those donating large amounts of money to the Republican nominees either. And I didn't have much admiration for Maher before his announcement. I think he makes a living off complaining about the issues rather than doing anything to solve them. The money he has just thrown to the Super PAC has done nothing more for me than to cement that opinion. It's a shame, too, as Maher actually has the stage in which to truly send a message and truly help the country.

But, like a lot of people and organizations with similar stages on both the left and the right, he's far more interested in playing the game. In furthering the division between the ideologies in this nation. He's proven himself no different than the Koch brothers. Or SEIU.

We need to put an end to Super PACs and quit allowing people to buy elections.

This issue is far more upstream than the $$. The political climate attracts not the 'brightest minds' or the 'strongest leaders' to the presidency, but it attracts used car salesman who's primary goal is political endurance and maximizing personal wealth. Seriously, in this great country of ours, 'religious zealot' Santorum, 'Out of touch'' Romney, 'Delusional' Gingritch, 'Stiff as a board' Obama are our best choices?

Sachmo...please don't dog the used car salesmen...at least the American public have a choice to walk away with their wallets intact from car salesmen...unlike the tax-levying politician #$%$..

This is one issue that has absolutely no political affiliation. It's not conservative, liberal, dem or repub. The Super Pacs have taken the electoral process out of the hands of the average American and put it in the hands of the super rich. It has to end!

Last time i checked this is AMERICA! The land of the free and the land of the homeless! Regardless of how much is spent they are all crooks! Hell bent on destroying what is left of the middle class. Once the middle class are gone then they can really subjugate the American poor and the rich can revel in their greediness! Its time to push reset on Washinton for all of them. Shrink Govt enough so that there are no more career politicians!

Uh ok so where was this article when the Koch Brothers, Bain Capital, and Sheldon Whateverstein was giving much more than a million dollars to the other GOP SuperPACS?
      • karela 3 mths ago
Yeah, and didn't that Casino guy give ten million to Gingrich's PAC?
      • darwood 3 mths ago
cuz the media is bought off.
      • Elio L 2 mths ago
Now we should apparently expect comedians to solve the country's issues? Oh that's right, we have the GOP hopefuls! Why single out Maher? At least he was up front, unlike Willard who no one knows where his funding comes from. How about the billionaire funder for Moonunit Gingrich? Or Foster Freiss? Come on, let's be real.

      I can agree with that.

Don't blame this on bill Maher, blame it on the Republican dominated U.S. Supreme Court and their decision in Citizens United. Because of the courts decision in Citizens United these Super Pacs can collect unlimited funds from anonymous donors including corporations. For the court to allow huge amounts of anonymous money into our election process is wrong and can not possible be good for our democracy. I hope you will write a commentary explaining what we the people can do to get all the corporate and anonymous money out of our elections. We may even need a constitutional amendment to stop this travesty. I hope you will help by writting about this issue. Thanks.

Unless you want to change the Constitution, there is nothing in it prohibiting free speech of anyone or any entity. And we are better for it. People are smart and can tell the difference between fact and propaganda. Let them make the decision of what they want to believe.

Dolt! Read the last sentence of the article.
    • Terrye  •  3 mths ago
Didn't anyone listen to his reason? He is against single individuals or corporations being able to buy elections and wants the supreme court to undo the Citizens United measure. What he is saying is until that happens he's willing to fight fire with fire.
      • JackbootedGOPer 3 mths ago
        sure

"Didn't anyone listen to his reason?" he just gave a million dollars to help ensure america's debt drags it to the bottom of the ocean... honestly, maher's reason doesn't matter.

        @Gus:
The worst you can say about Obama is he has continued Bush's policies, from tax cuts to wars to bailouts. So how would getting a republican back in the white house change anything?
    • CaryH  •  Phoenix, Arizona  •  3 mths ago
So it only really upsets you when a liberal does it? You mention Republican candidates as a group but where was your indignation when Newts billionaire buddy started throwing millions, plural at his campaign. I think you also missed the point that he was doing it to point out what's wrong with the system. He said he would have preferred not to do it but given the situation he felt he had to do it. The whole thing was fine so long as it gave Republicans an advantage but conservatives cry foul when their own loopholes get used against them.
    • Deb  •  3 mths ago
You already have to have a lot of money to make it that far in politics in the first place. It's never about who would make the best leader. The public is just bought to believe that.
    • J  •  3 mths ago
And ... Graybeal misses another point Maher makes: how absurd the entire Super PAC rules are. Much like Colbert's public service, Maher highlights how elections are bought. Graybeal selects arbitrary themes serving her need to quickly produce something to post while ignoring the obvious point of Maher's actions.
    • Mechelle  •  Eugene, Oregon  •  3 mths ago
There should be no super PACs no outside funding for politicians, but as long as there is why should only the right profit from it? Why is it that when a liberal offers money to help combat the religious right's attack on American values and freedom he is wrong but when multiple corporations and individuals from the right load the super PACs for conservative candidates it is ok?
    • Curmudgeon  •  2 mths ago

Ludicrous that this author writes about Maher's one million dollar donation and not the KOCH BROTHERS' ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR DONATION. You have no credibility, miss.

How do two almost identical Parties represent 320 million increasingly diverse people? It's what they agree on thats the problem. The stuff they disagree on is all meaningless fluff.
We need a complete overhaul or we're finished.
    • Edwin  •  2 mths ago
If the superpac needs to end so does the much older "superpac" of unions spending millions to support candidates that simply ensure more money goes to unions. Look where the bailouts for jobs are going to. unionized labor.
