Bill Wolff to Helm Chelsea Handler’s Netflix Talk Show

Bill Wolff has new vision after leaving “The View.”

The producer, who used to run Rachel Maddow’s primetime hour on MSNBC, will lead Chelsea Handler’s much-anticipated talk-show effort slated to debut on Netflix in 2016.

Wolff “brings new creativity and fresh conversations to the talk show format that the on-demand generation and Chelsea’s audience will care about,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer, in a prepared statement.

Handler and Netflix have vowed to create a new talk-show format for people who increasingly get their content on-demand, rather than tuning in after the late local news. In remarks made since she left her perch at E! last August, Handler has described a project that might be akin to “60 Minutes” — topical and investigative — while appearing a few times a week, but not every day.

Wolff, who suffered through a difficult stretch at “The View” plagued by staff difficulties, served as vice president of primetime programming at MSNBC between 2008 and 2014, where he exec produced and helped create “The Rachel Maddow Show,” now that network’s flagship program.

Wolff started his career at ESPN and has written several screenplays and scripts. He also helped create and produce ESPN’s “Around the Horn” talk show.

“Viewers love Chelsea and her ability to go to a place and ask the questions no one else will,” Wolff said in prepared remarks. I can’t wait to work with these pioneers in the business to entertain and educate audiences around the world.”

Handler will next be seen starring in “Chelsea Does,” a Netflix documentary film series in which she explores four topics: marriage, racism, technology and drugs.
