    Birmingham Maple Clinic Reports on Studies Linking Oxytocin, Reduced Social Anxiety

According to the Clinic’s blog, psychcentral.com recently published findings on a new study carried out by Concordia University which found that Oxytocin (a naturally occurring hormone in females) if taken intranasally, may help to increase the self-esteem of those who suffer from social anxiety, making it easier to enjoy parties, dating and family gatherings.     The expert mental health providers at the Clinic’s Michigan treatment center reported that according to psychcentral.com, participants in the Concordia study self-administered a dose of Oxytocin intranasally and were given a questionnaire containing questions about their current mental state 90 minutes after the dose had been given. The results found that those who received Oxytocin reported feeling more outgoing and open to being social when compared with those who received a placebo. This is significant, the team pointed out, in that this is the first indication that Oxytocin may have a part to play when it comes to safely treating social anxiety in individuals who suffer from the condition.
