    BLACK HISTORY IS AMERICAN HISTORY

My 3-year-old recognizes President Obama -- or "O-ba-na," as she calls him. She can't tell you what he does, but, perhaps because of her mom's TV news viewing, she associates him with the U.S. flag and military rituals.

She also recognizes the first lady and their two lovely daughters. (She further associates the president with a certain 1960s hit by R&B singer Al Green, likely a byproduct of her mom's YouTube preferences.)

She surely isn't the only black preschooler - indeed, the only preschooler of any race -- who has an easy familiarity with the name "Obama." The election of the first black president, a man who has become a multi-platform media star, has captivated children (and adults) of all ages and races.

My daughter will grow up in a very different country than the one in which I spent my childhood. Hers is a country in which a black president is not just the stuff of fiction, where racial intermarriage is no novelty, where black men and women excel not just on playing fields and in musical halls, but also in board rooms, science labs and surgical suites.

    Hallelujah.

And that clear, unequivocal racial progress leads me to ask the following questions: Is Black History Month still necessary? Is it even a good idea?

Granted, the Republican presidential candidates appear to need a good remedial class in the country's long and bloody struggle for racial justice. They are running decidedly retro campaigns straight out of the 1960s, when the country was swept by the civil rights crusade and President Lyndon Johnson's "War on Poverty" was belatedly addressing centuries of black poverty born of stark oppression.

To listen to the dog whistles and cow bells about welfare, food stamps and births outside marriage, you'd think they were taking up where Barry Goldwater left off. While Republicans are wont to admit that racism still exists, the current crop of president candidates also seem reluctant to acknowledge that the majority of food stamp recipients are white. (Or, for that matter, that Sarah Palin's oldest daughter bore a child outside wedlock.)

The right wing of the Republican Party -- the constituency most catered to during this presidential primary season -- is strangely unmoored on issues related to race. Ultraconservatives long for a fantasy version of the 1950s; they attack liberals, especially Obama, for pointing out the sins of the nation's past.

Yet, this campaign shows them curiously unwilling to admit that black America is not a huge underachieving, crime-committing, excuse-making drain on the nation's treasury. They refuse to explicitly acknowledge black millionaires or corporate executives, black astronauts and physicians, black Ivy Leaguers and Rhodes Scholars -- though they are benevolent reminders of how far we've come.

They are forced to acknowledge Obama, certainly, and readily agree that he's black. But the bigots among them refuse to acknowledge that he's a red-blooded American, just as they are.

And decades of Black History Month observations haven't cured that sort of racism. Nor will decades more. Those with a determined interest in believing their own bigotry will continue to do so.

Meanwhile, America's younger generations deserve a fuller and more complex history of their country -- one that doesn't relegate the contributions of black Americans to one short month. That segregates us once again -- as if black history is separate and apart from American history.

It isn't. Black Americans are part and parcel of American history, from the very beginning. A black man, Crispus Attucks, was felled during the Boston Massacre, one of the skirmishes that fueled the sentiment for independence among the colonists. Black men fought for the Union Army in the Civil War, and black pioneers helped to settle the Old West.

Before President Truman integrated the armed forces, black soldiers insisted on the right to fight and die for the country that gave them less respect than its avowed enemies. I have a photo of my grandfather, with a sidearm strapped to his hip, at some European outpost during World War I.

Those stories need to be woven into a full accounting of American history, not set aside for one month (the shortest month) of the year. Here's hoping my daughter and her classmates are getting that full accounting by the time she's in high school.

Why cant it just be called American History month???
      • Dicky K. 2 mths ago
then who would feel "special"? Who would feel like they have something to be proud of? (because maybe they collectively, have a massive inferiority complex)
    • OWUSSIE  •  2 mths ago
America will be a much better country when we all learn to vote for people rather than a particular party and /or the color of ones skin!
      • WMB 2 mths ago
Could not agree more. From my viewpoint, we continue to keep ourselves divided and perpetuate/create more hate and ill will. Ever noticed all Congressman or Senators are always labeled? ie, D-OK or R-GA. Once elected, they are Senotors or Congressman but we must continue to label them to cause dissention. We have Afri-Americans, Irish-Catholics, and then we have gays or lesbians. Why must everyone be assigned a category or label? Black history should be incorporated in American history. As long as everyone has a label, hate and division will continue.

Black history month, black entertainment television, ebony magazine, black actor awards, black music awards.....and you say whites are racist. I do not see white history month, nor ivory magazine. There is no affirmative action for the white race. It does appear that there is a disparity of sorts....whites are the scape goats for all the blacks ills.
      • Bwana 3 mths ago
Every day is white history magazine actors musicians day. Yep, there's a disparity.
      • Nobama 3 mths ago
        Bwana...dumb monkey !!! Yeah!
      • Adam 2 mths ago
Yeah, there's no affirmative action because y'all don't seem to need it. You weren't held back for hundreds of years on the basis of your skin color.

So tired of this black history thing and im not even white. They beat it like a dead horse, carry a permanent chip on their shoulder and carry a stack of race cards ready to pull them out at whim is my only history with blacks. They are without a doubt the most racist of all.
      • OUST OBAMA 2 mths ago
Thet only play the race card when they don't get something they didn't earn

AppMaker: You need to quit being so negative about low class black people. Take a good look at those middle-class and upper middle-class African Americans who are contributing members of American society, and I'm not talking about only the entertainers and athletes. Many black people have made valuable contributions to America. You need to read some ethnic studies books about prominent black scientists, doctors, business people, etc. Quit looking at the negative stereotypes and do some research on some positive plack people. And BTW, "racist" is not a term that applies to black people. See my 2 posts above; you might learn something.

u forgot to add the largest majority of the american prison population as an accomplishment. An overwhelming majority. your kind can talk all the trash u want all day long. if u can dish it, u better be able to take it.

i guess im still naive and believe everyone should love everyone. i am black and i was born free and yes there was slavery but it didnt only happen to one race EVERY race experienced racism AND racism within your own race. what about the holocaust? we all make mistakes i dont care what color you are. there are good an bad in every race. after reading this article i was afraid to read the comments posted. i wasnt going to comment, but as i read the comments below it broke my heart and i wanted to add my own two cents of course this is my opinion but i could really care less what color you are. im so over hearing this type of stuff isnt there enough injustice and other crappy stuff going on in the world to still keep worrying about what color the person is stitting next to me???? there is so much to this topic and it can be broken up into so so many diff ways with people trying to "justify" racism and keep the stereotypes alive. that is too much time wasted!!!! go help build a home serve a meal at a shelter hell give someone hug!!! or even just a simple SMILE will do. PLEASE PLEASE STOP THE HATE AND HURT!!! be proud of who you are as a person and what you have accomplished not because im this color and i accomplished this that and the third. IF you do believe in God do you think when your time comes He's gonna say...you cant get in cause your black or your white or you have red hair and you cant get in cause you dyed your hair purple?

we need people like you in ALL of the groups.
we need to judge ourselves and not others and accept others like we want others to accept us. we also need to start teaching our children and others to accept responsibility for our own actions and lives. I understand that some start off with better circumstances then others but less face it we all have different advantages and disadvantages.
      • hx 2 mths ago
Your post brought tears to my eyes. Alas you, and your likes, in all ethnic groups in US, make so low a number in our population.

Black History is American History and teach it as such, Instead of dividing it and seperating the races with further discord.
    • Sudo Nim  •  2 mths ago
No offense to all Black people

Why do you always harp on the white man for all your deficiencies. When will this cry of racism ever end? All other non whites ie Hispanics, Japanese, Indians (natives and from India).....all live under exactly as the same conditions as you do but we never hear them whine/complain about the white man? Why? Even the Jews who were sent to gas chambers never behaved like this. Seriously, no offense, I'm trying to understand where you're coming from. State instituted racism ended a long time ago, billions spent on affirmative action and yet you whine and complain. Why?

      BTW, I'm not white.
    • Colleen  •  Akron, Ohio  •  3 mths ago
It is strange you do not hear the american indian whine and they really got screwed over.keep telling your children how bad it was and they will want whitey to pay forever.

Obama would never have been elected to anyting had we not fought the Civil War.

    • T-Rex  •  3 mths ago
Wonder if she'd support a "White History Month"...or a "White Entertainment Channel"....or a "Miss White America......oops, I'm being a racist. As to Tucker's way of thinking, only a White guy or gal can be a racist.
    • sinecureseeker  •  3 mths ago
So is Chinese, Irish, Spanish, Russian, etc etc etc... all part of us history... and our prez is only 6% black, his other parts are 50% white and 44% dark skinned arab... so this is a very illogical article, filled with racial hate.
    • Pat Walsh  •  2 mths ago
I demand we have an Eskimo month.

Insight into black history. Rape, Murder, Prostitution, Burgulary, Robbery, Illegal drug crimes,
      and the list goes on.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  2 mths ago
Why is it called "black" then?
      The month perpetuates division.
Time to put an end to those little check-boxes identifying race on applications.
      We're all human.

She has the right idea about eliminating the bias, but she needs to go a little further and mention the need to eliminate all enforced racial bias. Get rid of minority laws, qoutas, and any racially exclusive organizations. Make equal equal. Reverse racism still begets racism, level the feild and people will get along better for it. People can still huddle together in communities where they feel comfortable with their own race, but make it illegal to operate a discrimitory enterprise, regardless of what color it represents.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  3 mths ago
If you want to understand black people, just look at every formerly white neighborhood in every city in America that is now all black, and look at the changes that have taken place since blacks moved in, and whites moved out! FACTS can not be denied.
    • observer  •  2 mths ago
NO ONE CARES what Cynthia Tucker thinks.
    • Tweacherwous Twickster  •  3 mths ago
Tucker loves to divide. I mean, what if we wanted to start Caucasian History month? Jeez you'd have the whole alphabet soup of organizations, like SPLC, NAACP, etc., screaming for blood. This is just bull shirt. Yes, there were, and are, some incredibly remarkable blacks in history, and making it as we speak, but they would dismiss any reference to themselves solely because they are black. They live by their achievements and character only, and the rest is not important.
