Black NJ leaders: No public vote on civil rights

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Two of New Jersey's most influential black leaders blasted Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday for proposing gay marriage be put to a popular vote in November, but the Republican governor insisted he's offering a reasonable compromise amid his personal opposition to same-sex nuptials.

Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver and Newark Mayor Cory Booker said in separate forums that civil rights are guaranteed by the Constitution and don't belong on the ballot.

Booker said baseball great Jackie Robinson would not have had the opportunity to break the sport's color barrier had the matter been put to a vote, and the mayor himself would not have had the opportunity, years later, to be elected to lead New Jersey's largest city. Oliver said in a statement she was offended by Christie's comment Tuesday that bloodshed may have been avoided in the South, and people would have been happier, if the civil rights issues of the 1960s were settled by public referendum.

"Governor, people were fighting and dying in the streets of the South because the majority refused to grant minorities equal rights by any method," Oliver said. "It took legislative action to bring justice to all Americans, just as legislative action is the right way to bring marriage equality to all New Jerseyans."

Booker said during a news conference in Newark: "Dear God, we should not be putting civil rights issues to a popular vote, to be subject to the sentiments, the passions of the day. No minority should have their rights subject to the passions and the sentiments of the majority. This is the fundamental bedrock of what our nation stands for."

Christie defended himself at a Statehouse news conference, saying he's offering a compromise on gay marriage.

"I'm in divided government and I'm trying to find a way for people ... to find another pathway where everybody can have a chance to get what they want," he said. "My view is a public referendum on a constitutional amendment regarding same-sex marriage is a way to get to that result."

Six states and Washington, D.C. permit gay marriages. Thirty-one states have adopted constitutional amendments defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

The effort to legalize same-sex marriage gained new momentum this month when the Democratic-controlled Senate declared the issue a priority for the new legislative session. The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced the measure in an 8-4 party-line vote following a three-hour hearing on Tuesday, but Christie upended their efforts by announcing that he would veto any gay marriage bill that made it to his desk. He previously said he would consider the bill but was unlikely to change his mind.

A gay marriage bill failed in the Senate two years ago.

Christie said during the 2009 campaign that the issue should be put to a public vote because of its significance, and he reiterated that call on Tuesday, likely derailing any Republican legislators from supporting gay marriage legislation.

A day earlier, the governor, who is Catholic, surprised almost everyone by nominating an openly gay black Republican and a Korean-born immigrant to the state Supreme Court.

With Christie seeking a referendum on gay marriage and Democratic leaders issuing a resounding "no way'" a protracted political standoff seemed inevitable.

Christie acknowledged that eventuality Wednesday, saying: "We all know how this movie is going to end. If they pass the bill, it's going to be vetoed. If they attempt to override the veto, it will be sustained. So, I'm trying to give them an alternative movie."

Other black Democrats weighed in later in the day.

"If the governor was hoping to defend his reprehensible stance on marriage equality by suggesting that those who fought and died for civil rights in this county would have preferred a referendum, that by all historical accounts would have been most likely defeated, he failed miserably," said Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson-Coleman, former Assembly majority leader.

Marriage is a social contract enforceable under the law, therefore any person should be entitled to enter into it. To deny it based on some bizarre religious belief is just legalized bigotry.

The only people this law is hurting is divorce lawyers, who deserved to be punished but not this way.

Every person is entitled to get married. There is no discrimination here. Every man in the U.S. can marrry A woman. Every woman in the U.S. can marry A man. If you call this discrimination, then why are you discriminating against bisexuals. By your logic a man should be able to marry a man and a woman. Then it just goes down the slope, of letting people marry animals. Why would you discriminate? People say an animal cannot make a decision, but I bet there are more than a few animal "psychologists" who would say that the animal knows what makes it happy, and understands the commitment.

Michael, everyone also used to have the same right to marry within their own race. Restrictions on marriage have to be legally justifiable, in the case of excluding gays they are NOT justifiable.

Your typical slippery slope argument has NOTHING to do with gay marriage. If polygamists want to get married, they can argue their case on its own merits. NOTHING TO DO WITH GAY MARRIAGE!

Why is the government even involved in sanctioning marriage?! Long ago, to get married you had to submit Wasserman test results (for syphilis). Since that requirement was dropped, there is no rationale for the government to be involved.
I don't see how people wanting to get married hurts the institution. The problem is people NOT wanting to get married and yet have kids (like all those Hollywood celebs) or people repeatedly involved in short-term marriages (again, like the Hollywood celebs) who really destroy the meaning of marriage.

Yes, the minority (so-called 1%ers) should not have their rights (right to property) put up to a vote so that it can be taken away (taxed and redistributed) by the majority! Uh huh

Marriage is religious #$%$ The federal and state governments should be barred from recognizing *any* marriage in *any* context. Two guys want to marry? Find a rabbi, priest, imam, just don't expect the government to give you tax breaks, or immunity from testifying against your husband. The same would apply to normals as well as; man and woman want to marry? Fine. Find a rabbi, priest, imam, but don't expect governmental benefits. As far as I'm concerned, the part of the Constitution saying state must recognize marriages performed in other states should suffer the same fate as the 18th Amendment.

Californians voted on Gay Marriage and voted it down. A civil marriage between two people of the same sex should safisfy them but no they want to defy God's Law and act like they are perfectly normal. For the women they need a mans sperm to have a child. for a Man they need a woman to carry the baby for them. Doesn't that tell you something. God created a man and a woman to pro create. Marriage is for them not the same sex. I don't care how you look at it. I am not against Gays and Lesbians they have to answer to God. But when it comes to marriage. Come On, stop trying to make something normal that isn't.

It seems that god has directed you to say what others don't understand.
The harsh reality is that every and all gays will never be recognised and accepted by god.
They were not born this way but its through genetics from their previous ancestors, that made the human minds become queer.
God can't be blamed for something that is not his doing and fault.
They are barred from being married in our churches because churches have a big
warning that came from god long ago.
1Corinthians6;9 tells the truth and when god says they shall not inherit the kingdom of god, what do you think he was to say to st.paul when he spent his days in the town of corinth.
Do you know why and understand all of this.?

Please have "god" contact me and we can discuss the issue. I don't believe a book that was written thousands of years ago, translated thousands of times, by thousands of people I've never met.

Talking snakes and men floating on clouds is believable to you, yet human beings, a social creature, can't find love in the same sex. That's just too much of a stretch!

Republicans are going to take your rights whoever you are.

One way to preserve rights is to vote them all out!

Get rid of them! For good!

The government has no business regulating marriages. It's especially shocking that the Republicans of all people can't understand that. Furthermore, the Constitution separates church and state. Therefore, the fact that the Christian church defines marriage as between a man and woman should not have any bearing on state and federal laws. Again, that's something that the Republicans should easily understand. You can't just pick out parts of the constitution you like (e.g. gun rights) and ignore others.

He is right .. Should be left up to the citizens to decide what is right for this state and/or country. That's why so many people died in order for all of us to be free when our founding fathers created the U.S. Constitution. It was far from easy and many lives were lost to get it done. We, as a State/Country, have moved so far from its original intention. Those of you who make fun of our Governor are pathetic. Those of you who only want things done YOUR way for your benefit are just as pathetic. Grow up !!

Christie is standing up for his beliefs, something liberals can't grasp. These minority "leaders" are food stamp/welfare/entitlement kings, who are racist, hateful, and stupidly blind to reality. Gay isn't normal, and never will be.
