Boeing Boing: Obama Visits Plane Maker to Push US Manufacturing

EVERETT, Wash. - Before a backdrop of the newest American-made Boeing passenger jets, President Obama Friday will announce a series of steps aimed at boosting U.S. manufacturers, while harnessing their momentum for political gain.

Obama, on the final stop of his three-day swing through California and Washington, will tour a Boeing production facility and speak to a crowd of several hundred workers inside the final assembly building for the company's new 787 Dreamliner.

Boeing has become a poster child for a thriving manufacturing sector and American export business, and one Obama will use to highlight a battery of steps he believes will help nudge large and small businesses to achieve similar success.

Obama is directing the Export-Import Bank, which helps finance U.S. companies that want to sell their goods abroad, to more aggressively support firms that face competition from foreign businesses unfairly subsidized by their governments in violation of "international disciplines."

As part of that effort the Bank will also launch a new pilot program for small businesses, providing 6-12 month loans of up to $500,000 to help them grow their exports, officials said Thursday night.

Short-term financing is "the most critical spot and where commercial banks frequently don't want to lend," said Fred Hochberg, chairman and president of the Export-Import Bank, explaining why the financing will help.

Some of Obama's "announcements" are less substantive, including a rhetorical push to reauthorize financing for the Export-Import Bank, which expires in May or sooner, a plan to streamline paperwork for companies seeking to take advantage of foreign trade zones to reduce their tax burdens, and a new website that will serve as a clearinghouse for government resources for exporters.

Manufacturing, which Obama underscored in his State of the Union Address last month, is increasingly part of his pitch for a second term. And thanks in part to Boeing, the sector is undergoing a revitalization that is helping him make the case.

In 2010, Obama set a goal of doubling American exports in five years - a goal his administration says the country is on track to meet two years in.

"We keep hitting this target month after month, consistently," said Hochberg. "We keep hitting a new high for exports."

Last month alone, Boeing announced the single largest airplane order ever from any airline, a $21 billion deal for 230 737-aircraft by Indonesia's Lion Air. It's expected to support thousands of American jobs.

        Two words - GEORGE SOROS!!!
      • Lurabyss 3 mths ago
George Soros likes to invest his money in Brazilian companies... Warren Buffet will stand to make hundreds of $millions from any delay in the building of the Keystone pipeline in the USA, as his newly acquired railroad - the only alternate method of moving the oil from Canada to Texas must now be used as an expensive alternate to the pipeline. This administration and his Billionaire backers are all bleeding the American system dry for personal profit and Obama is willingly pulling the levers for them to do it. Most corrupt president ever. Obama makes Al Capone look like an amateur!

Talk to people in South Carolina. Manufacturing is fine as long as all those employees are unionized. What giant CF.
      • don 3 mths ago
Every body needs to be unionized. YOU BET YOUR BOOTS.
      • JaC 3 mths ago
I was being sarcastic. Unions are among the most destructive forces in the country.
      • Jesse 3 mths ago
Unions keep corporations from being too greedy. Only a stuck-up republican would be against them. By the way, I live 3 miles from where Boeing builds all its 737's here in Renton, WA.... GO BOEING!!!! And as far as South Carolina goes... too bad for them. And I can say that also, having been born and raised in Charleston, SC.

      • Jim 3 mths ago
Too late - His friends at Solydra took the taxpayer's dollars and ran to the bankruptcy court as fast as they could to keep the money and dump their bad idea on the taxpayers. Obama will get his share in campaign contributions! The only thing green about the solar industry is the money liberal socialist admin is wasting or stealing from the taxpayer.

Don't forget who wrote the GLB Act that deregulated banks, and the NAFTA bill that sent our jobs overseas for profits. Those bills were written by REPUBLICANS. Google it, who wrote those bills that caused the most damage to America in the name of profits. Then there is the Iraq war. Let's not get ourselves on that topic. America has spun down the crapper due to republican greed. Walk out of your meths labs, get an education, don't breed.

If only our media would report on news like this! Unbelievable!
General Electric is planning to move its 115-year-old X-ray division
from Waukesha , Wis. , to Beijing . In addition to moving the
headquarters, the company will invest $2 billion in China and train
more than 65 engineers and create six research centers. This is the
same GE that made $5.1 billion in the United States last year, but
paid no taxes - the same company that employs more people overseas
than it does in the united States ..
So let me get this straight. Obama appointed GE Chairman Jeff
Immelt to head his commission on job creation (job czar). Immelt is
supposed to help create jobs. I guess the Obama forgot to tell him in
which country he was supposed to be creating those jobs.

If this doesn't show you the total lack of leadership of Obama, I
don't know what does. Please pass this information to others and think
about it before you buy a GE product.

This has been verified on Snopes.

What a sham of an article. Must be from Media Matters and the White House Communications office? We know the Marxist NLRB has tried to block Boeing's opening of a new plant in South Carolina. How dumb does this media think we are?

He says he supports them unless they build those evil corporate jets or anything in a right-to-work state. We have a lot of totally ignorant voters supporting this creep.

Just anther reelction campaign stop - if he was so interested in getting manufacture jobs back and increasing manufacture productivity why has he waited for three years - oh yes it gives him the opportunity for a Public Relations interview at the Tax Payers expense (again). Hmm what was that sppech that he made stating that the governement needs to be held fiscally accountable - When is he going to start living up to what he preaches instead of wasting the Tax Payers taxes on all of his bonndagles in an attempt to garnish votes!

Good old ABC story. Not a mention of how Obama and Holder blocked the new Boeing plant in the Carolina's.
    • Bob  •  Kansas City, Missouri  •  3 mths ago
Let's talk about what's wrong with Obama: 1) He tours a Boeing plant in Wahington state mere months after his NLRB tries to close a Boeing plant in South Carolina which would have made Boeing more competitive, and two years after attempting to award the largest military contract in history to Air Bus, Boeing's competitor. 2) He proposes a budget that proposes to raise taxes on 1% of the population by 1.5 trillion, while the average tax revenue is 2.1 trillion. That's a 71% tax increase on 1% of the population already paying over 40% of all US taxes, and, at the same time, his budget still adds 1.3 trillion to the deficit. 3) He celebrates a payroll tax extension cutting payroll taxes to employees, but also cutting contributions to Social Security forcing it to go bankrupt earlier, and neither he, nor any of the geniuses working for him, notice that the unfunded liability moves the debt limit discussion from after the election to about September 30, before the election. 4) He campaigns against Congress, half of which, the Senate, is held by his party, and it is the Senate which is bottling up legislation for jobs, a balanced budget, a budget in general, repeal of the Affordable Healthcare Act and other legislation that the constituents would like to see passed. 5) In foreign affairs, the sone of one of his cabinet secretaries is being held in Egypt, and he can do nothing. 6) Europe, his economic model, is falling a part, but he continues to follow their lead, spending more money than we take in. 7) At a time when Iran, an unstable country which continues to threaten the United States, is developing a nuclear weapon, he proposes to eliminate 80% of our nuclear weapons, and he proposes to cut the Defense Budget. 8) He proposes more money for "green energy" despite Solyndra and other debaucles. 9) At a time when gasoline and diesel prices are climbing to $5 per gallon, he kills a pipeline to bring Canadian oil to the United States, allowing Canada to find other markets, China, and establishing a Canadian investment in Chinese reources on a permanent basis. He also delays Gulf drilling allowing two of our deep water rigs to move to Brazil on a permanent basis, killing future production. 10) He does not understand economics, and in particular, the fact that $5 per gallon fuel will stimulate inflation, bringing us stagflation, as fuel prices are translated into other products requiring the fuel to get to market. Inflation based on fuel costs in June will translate into increased unemployment, a slowing economy, and a busget battle just before the election.

I can't believe the gall of Obama going to an aircraft plant....Hey Obama, why did YOU and Panette take a defense contract away from Hawker/Beechcraft AT 6, and send it to Empraer Aircraft in Brazil...a Company that has ties to IRAN, could it be that Soros is a major stock holder in that Company.
