Chaka Khan Drops Out of Whitney Houston Tribute

    (Charles Eshelman/FilmMagic/Getty Images)

Fans of the song "I'm Every Woman" were disappointed to hear that singer and song writer Chaka Khan pulled out of a tribute to Whitney Houston at The Grammy Awards.

Khan recorded theĀ  song recordedĀ  in 1978, but it became a much bigger hit for Houston when she recorded it for the soundtrack for "The Bodyguard."

Khan was expected to join Jennifer Hudson in honoring the late pop icon at the show. It would have been a nostalgic note for Khan. As a teenager Houston sang backup for Khan, who is probably best known for her hit "I Feel for You."

But in the end, Khan decided to remember her friend privately, tweeting:

"As I grieve the loss of my friend and 'little sister,' I don't feel it appropriate to perform at this time. Continue to pray for the family."

Not everyone wants to showcase - some use funerals as a way to promote themselves - Chaka chose to be private - what's wrong w/that?

Chaka, I respect and honor your decision to grieve the loss of your friend. That is the kind of class we should expect from fellow entertainers.

"I don't feel it appropriate to perform at this time",...............Says it all...

Chaka Kahn shows a lot of class by chosing to grieve in private, though that concept will not be understood by the Facebook generations.

I think the entire Grammy organization and the all the celebrities were in a terrible situation and left with only a few hours to decide what to do. Whatever their decisions, individually and collectively, they did the best they could under the circumstances. To criticize those choices is to show a lack of compassion and understanding for having to make sensitive decisions, none of which is optimal, under the gun.

Still it was so grimly repetitive. Entertainment reporters, not the brightest bulbs in the lot, asked the same thing over and over. I turned the channel and watched The Adjustment Bureau." Good movie. Matt Damon is dependable.

Whitney Houston set the bar for how to be a top R&B artist. Yes, it was sad how her life ended up in the late 90s and through the 2000s, but let's not forget how phenomenal and mind-blowing she was in the 80s and early 90s. She set records that people didn't know could be set. This is why the world mourns her. She may have made bad decisions, but you can't forget how successful and talented she was.

        Well said!
      • Angela 3 mths ago
Absolutely well said...because let's face everyone when your loved one passes from cancer or AIDS or watever, do you dwell on the disease that killed them or on the legacy of "good" memories you have about them! Think about that!

Set the bar? She's an addict. How can you people idolize an addict?

I'll miss her iconic inspiring voice. My condolences to her daughter and mother, those who were mostly attached to her. She will be missed but her music and songs will continue on.

chaka khan has nothing to prove to anyone by choosing to remember whitney in her own way..privately...Good for you,

I would imagine that Chaka feels very strongly that this is about Whitney, not her, and thus chose to express her sorrow privately instead of on some sort of public pedestal.

Chaka nows what's best for her, people have to handle these things in their own way. Sad story no matter.

Whitney made all the wrong choices in her life. Sad she ended this way. We hope her daughter learns from this.

Hello Isahi, she did not make all the wrong choices in her life. Her triumphs outweigh her trials. She did a lot of things right, for example giving back. However, you have the right to be so negative, especially in the time of death.

No she made the wrong choices!!!! One of them was Bobby Brown.
      • Nay 3 mths ago
ok, Bobby was definitely wrong choice, but to pick up a mic and to use the gift that God gave her, and the devil tried to steal when a hanger went through her throat when she was young! No, you need to change your thinking! She sang in church, she inspired on the mic and behind, she mentored, she loved, even if it was the wrong man, she loved her daughter, she did not abort her or abandon, her, she fought to get well and off drugs then prescription drugs killed her. She used her gift and inspired millions! That's why you are here on this post reading and writing about her. you felt something too!

I think that things we don't understand, we should leave alone and not judge. At one time in my life, I found myself addicted to a prescription pain killer. My doctor wanted to wean me off of them. I told him no, I will never take another one of those in my life (I was shocked to find myself addicted.) I had to go through withdrawaI, and never took another one and never wanted another one. Obviously, I do not have an addictive personality, but, I don't take that to mean I am better than someone else, stronger than someone else or more than someone else. I just know I was blessed with some different tools. We are all different, with different abilities and different strengths, so who are any of us to throw the first stone. Whitney was gifted with one of the most beautiful voices we ever heard. Maybe the price she had to pay for possessing that voice was much more than she could handle. None of us know another's inner pain or torment. Instead of hating, why don't we celebrate the good gifts God gave each of us and thank him for allowing us, for whatever space of time, to have shared in the incredible moments she gave to the world. Thank you and God Bless.

Chaka Khan was more than likely overcome with emotions to have sung her song " I'm Every Woman" which is totally understandable. I respect her and her decision.

So sad to read so many ignorant comments. The truth is this was a very troubled woman. Raised in the church and led to the evil world that WE ALL live in. People need to stop worshiping other human beings(celebrities). We ALL make mistakes but some of us are more eqipped to make changes for the better. A marriage to a life long drug addict and a bank full of money to buy drugs with a daily drug cheerleader with you every day makes it harder to come out of the loop.

I truly think that Whitney Houstons voice and life was lived out as a lesson for us all of learn from. Nothing but truly beautiful sounds came from her soul to us for a few decades. Some with wonderful encouraging messages about love, hope and understanding. One of the few TRULY talented REAL singers (like Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion,Barbara Striesand etc etc) Most of those phonies on that stage last night with their pitch perfect and lipsincing is a an embarrassement to the trade. Many of them can not sing in tune or even read music or if they can, that CAN'T sing. At least we can admit Whitney Houston was a SINGER!

So when you talk about LEGENDS, know what you are talking about. Have respect for their struggle and realize that you had the change to experience GREATNESS if your life time because they don't last forever. Just like our loved-ones that pass away. Iam sure people would not want people to know about some of their dirty secrets and failures because, we all have them.

I am sadded to hear of the misfortunate loss of a beautiful soul. May she rest in peace. And may we all become better people by learning of the difficulties other people go through. This will help the world we live in a better place. Have compassion.

      Peace

I don't blame her for pulling out of that tribute and grieving quietly for her friend. Not everyone needs to put on a public show like her so called friends did..

People should stop judging on how people should griev, if someone died in your family, how would you like it if cameras were all over, and keep asking you ques. to see if you say the wrong thing.

People should be reminded that cause of death has not yet been determined. Just because prescription drugs were found in Whitney Houston's room doesn't mean she mixed drugs and alcohol. There are no reports that say a Fifth of Jack Daniels was also found. So, people are speculating as to what caused her death. Reports also say that she was found submerged in the tub, her face below the water line. Why speculate? It's a waste of time. Be satisfied with the notion that you simply don't know. Wait for the official coroner's report.
