Former Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones became the MVP when he rode to the rescue of an ex-teammate who was among thousands stuck on iced over Atlanta highways Tuesday night.

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman was among the thousands of people stranded when the rare southern snowstorm turned major roadways into sheets of ice.

Freeman shared his plight on Twitter where he let his followers know he was safe, but stuck in an epic traffic jam.

Going on 5 and a half hours in this traffic! Atlanta traffic is the worst but then you add snow…woah!!

I'm safe but still not home " @Lisa_Johns_97: @C_Johnson28 Did @FreddieFreeman5 make it home safely?"

Retired baseball star and Twitter aficionado Chipper Jones saw his former teammate was in trouble and went into hero mode. His friend, Taylor Higgins, tweeted that she was sending Jones "on a run."

I'm thinking abt sending @RealCJ10 on rescue runs..any takers? Rescuing @FreddieFreeman5 now… pic.twitter.com/WjFuT8qyBV

Jones chivalrously rode into the cold on an all-terrain vehicle to find Freeman and rescue him from the gridlock.

Guess what?? It's really cold on the streets of Roswell and crabapple on a 4 wheeler! But my boy @FreddieFreeman5 was stranded. I got you!

Thank goodness for @RealCJ10 ! Saved me on a 4 wheeler! pic.twitter.com/ljXDEULJC9

A moment I'll never forget! ;)" @RealCJ10: He hugged me the whole way home!"

In all, Freeman's travel nightmare lasted nearly half a day.

Home after 11 hours…

Nearly 8,000 students across Georgia and Alabama camped out with teachers in school gyms or on buses and commuters abandoned cars along the highway to seek shelter in churches, fire stations - even grocery stores - after the rare storm left many frozen in their tracks.

Solid sheet of ice on my car. This is what I get for not venturing out to thaw my car yesterday ? #sneaux #icestorm pic.twitter.com/aPXQormojp

In Louisiana, the deep freeze even tamed New Orleans' infamously rowdy French Quarter.

Overheard last night: "French quarter ain't what is was, man. It's more like a French nickel." #nola #sneaux
