Chris Christie: Rick Santorum's Satan Comments Are Relevant

Rick Santorum says his 2008 comments that " Satan has set his sights on the United States of America"  are " not relevant" to the 2012 presidential race, but Chris Christie told me on "GMA" that Santorum is wrong.

"Listen, I think anything you say as a presidential candidate is relevant. It is by definition relevant. You're asking to be president of the United States. I don't think [Santorum's] right about that. I think it is relevant what he says. I think people want to make an evaluation, a complete evaluation of anyone who asks to sit in the Oval Office," the New Jersey governor said.

Adding to the religious discussion on the campaign trail, yesterday Santorum said he would "defend everything" he says and Mitt Romney said the Obama administration has "fought against religion."

But Christie doesn't think a debate over religion is a conversation the Republican Party wants to engage in.

"Do I think it's the things we should be as a party talking about and emphasizing at the moment? No," he said.

"I think the idea of the fighting against religion piece of this goes to more to Obamacare issue and the invasion of Obamacare into maybe some religious freedom issues.  I think that's an interesting conversation and an important one to have in the context of overall Obamacare and what's that going to mean for the country if it goes forward after the Supreme Court arguments this spring," he said.

Christie  - an outspoken supporter for the former Massachusetts governor - partly blamed Romney's lack of traction on the Republicans changing the rules from winner takes all to awarding delegates on a proportional basis.

And in his blunt style, Christie outright said Republicans are still asking him to enter the 2012 race, as Politico first reported.

"What I say back to them is I'm supporting Mitt Romney and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure he wins the nomination and is going to become president come January 2013," he said.

"I don't know how many times I have to say it.  The answer is no," he told me.

Christie is confident that Romney will be the Republican nominee, saying he'll wrap it up by April, and he isn't worried about today's AP poll that shows Romney trailing Obama by 8 points in a head-to-head match-up.

"You'll see it tighten up again because then people say, 'Okay, now I'm comparing Mitt Romney to the president,' and I think you'll see it tighten again, we've seen this in political races before," he said. "I'm not dreadfully worried about that part of it but I do think it should remind us as a party we should have never changed the rules because what we're doing now is creating ourselves problems we didn't need."

ChrisM, we apparently do not really know who Rick is. When asked about a statement he made a while back, he now says it is not relevant? Does he believe Satan is taking over this country or not? Before voting for him, I for sure want to know where he stands. He, after all has made religion an issue by attacking Obama on the subject, so he must answer the questions about religion. I am sure more questions on the subject will be brought up. The questions should be. This is a man who wants to lead this Country and the people deserve to know what he believes.

Obviously you are not a woman whose rights are being stolen by these religious zealots, whose bodies are being literally invaded in the name of religion.
      • finnyd420 3 mths ago
But you just did the same thing. "there is only one god". that is your belief not a fact. I agree with you that they need to stay out of my lady parts but when 50% of the population is being attacked it overrides gas prices as a hot button issue, at least in my mind.

Why do we in this country hate when a middle east country elects very religious people while the GOP wants to do the same things here? I know its because they claim that the muslims are all radicals and want to kill Americans while we are a nation of peace. We are the ones for peace? We have killed and bombed more countries than any other country around. I know there are radicals over there and they need to be taken care of. They are not usually our allies and do not like us. But lets get real, our last president called going to war in Iraq a crusade. I know some people here will miscontsrue what I'm saying and think I am anti American and love the Muslims. On the contrary, I love this country as much as anyone. But when we want to keep the muslim religion out of the politics of the middle east, which I agree they should be kept out of, we should do the same here. We were set up as a secular country and should stay that way and if we do then we can tell the rest of the world to do the same. But if the GOP wants to keep using religion as a cornerstone for their party and a reason to elect them then other countries will do the same and we can't say anything about it. Keep religion in the church and in the house and out of politics. I'm happy to know our leaders are men of belief but I don't want a leader who basis his policies on God.

This was supposed to be a banner year for the GOP but their candidates are so weak, weird and out of touch that they're giving Obama 4 more years in a silver plate, I thought they learned their lesson back in 2008 when John McCain threw his candidacy down the toilet by picking Sarah Palin...but again, I couldn't care less, I'm a staunch democrat.

Sadly, it's devolved into this now... "MY version of Christianity is better than YOUR version of Christianity, and if you don't believe everything I believe, then you're one of Satan's agents."

Santorum has every right to believe whatever he wants... We have the right to laugh hysterically.

What the hell has happened to the Republican party? It used to be a viable political party, but now it's mostly rabid religious fanatics, gullible conspiracy nuts, and an assortment of wackos who wallow in fear and hatred. It's like a political party for insane people now.
    • Hayley McKenzie  •  3 mths ago
In 21st Century America? This is almost a joke, and these are the best the GOP can offer? Sad state of the Party that used to house great men.

Listening to these fascist conservative bozos you think USA is in 1920 and 1930s Soviet Russia, when churches were forced to close, worshippers were told "God didn't exist", and the clery sent to Siberian gulags for forced labor. We are not. An neither are we in the times of Torquemada's inquisitions against antiCatholic "herectics" and we are neither in England Queen Mary Tudor persecuting and burning protestants. Get real, Mr Santorum and Mr Christie.

Santorum, it is relevent what you say and the positions that you take. You are a Presidential Candidate(that is shocking to even consider ). If you were a private citizen in your Branch Davidian Compound in Virginia, nobody would be bothering you about your extreme position and your kooky statements. Well until you and your militia start fire-bombing Planned Parenthood offices and public schools.
    • btrips  •  3 mths ago
Religion, Religion, Religion...who cares about Religion? Religion isn't going to create new jobs or lower gas prices or fix the economy! I thought there was separation of church and state in this country...why is this even a political issue?

I used to know a guy who would prattle on about how satan, the devil, whatever, was taking over the world, and who could provide you with all sorts of examples trying to validate his arguments. Thing is, he would be on a PCP binge when he did that, and his arguments and examples would make no sense - except to himself.

No matter which one wins. It looks to me like the tea party/Republicans parties of no compromise on principles are going to be doing a whole lot of compromising.
