Kids tend to monkey around, but 3-year-old Spencer Howell of, Ashburn, Va., takes the prize for his unique monkey moves, literally.
Spencer is the only toddler to dance his way into an upcoming "Curious George" DVD set to be released Aug. 7, 2012.
As the winner of the first-ever "Curious George Dance Contest," he will be featured in the new "Curious George: Dance Party!" DVD, and given the chance to show off his moves when he meets George in person. No date has been scheduled yet, but Katy Howell, Spencer's mom, says she thinks Curious George will be heading to his preschool for the special meet-and-greet.
"I'm sure all the kids will be very excited. But they did ask me 'How is Spencer with characters in costume?" Howell laughed.
The "Curious George Dance Contest" invited parents across the country to submit a video of their child exercising their creativity by showing his or her best dance moves to the show's theme song. Howell didn't see the contest originally, but is thankful a family member encouraged her to enter Spencer.
"My sister actually saw it, and Spencer is known for his dancing skills. We also read the books every night. So I thought, 'Wow, Spencer really should enter this contest," Howell said.
Of all the submissions, 10 finalists were chosen and showcased on the contest's website where friends and fans voted on their favorite.
"We entered two days before the contest closed. I got home and said, 'Hey Spencer, want to dance for mommy?' And I put the song on and you saw the results," said Howell.
She says the family was at the beach when they first heard Spencer was the winner.
"We were at the beach and I was checking my email because I wasn't at home to get the phone call, and they said 'Congrats you're the winner!' So of course I went screaming downstairs and Spencer started jumping up and down," Howell told ABC News.
The DVD will feature a special collection of eight dance-inspired television episodes. In a press release "Curious George" Executive Producer Dorothea Gillim said, "It's wonderful to see how our young viewers are inspired by George. We hope that Spencer's video will encourage other kids to get up, move, and exercise their creativity."
