    Flushing Can Spread Diarrhea Disease

Flushing the toilet with the lid up can spray diarrhea-causing bacteria into the air, according to a new study of hospital toilets.

Researchers from Leeds Teaching Hospitals in the U.K. detected C. difficile - a germ that can cause diarrhea and even life-threatening inflammation of the colon - nearly 10 inches above the toilet seat after flushing lidless hospital toilets. C. difficile is frequently found in hospitals and long-term care facilities were antibiotics are common.

"The highest numbers of C. difficile were recovered from air sampled immediately following flushing, and then declined 8-fold after 60 [minutes] and a further 3-fold after 90 [minutes]," the researchers reported in the January issue of the Journal of Hospital Infection.

    C. difficile was spotted on surrounding surfaces 90 minutes after flushing, with an average of 15 to 47 contaminated toilet water droplets landing in the nearby environment, according to the study.

"Lidless conventional toilets increase the risk of C. difficile environmental contamination, and we suggest that their use is discouraged, particularly in settings where [C. difficile infection] is common," the authors wrote.

Although the study focused on hospital toilets, experts say the findings extend to public restrooms and households.

"Almost everywhere we go, except in some public spaces, we have lids on our commodes. But not everyone puts them down when they flush," said Dr. William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. "Doing so will reduce this type of environmental contamination very substantially."

A 2004 episode of Myth Busters found lidless toilets do indeed spray water onto surrounding surfaces - including toothbrushes - but concluded the health risk was negligible. In fact "control" toothbrushes removed from the restroom during the flush were also speckled with fecal bacteria.

In recent years, C. difficile infections have increased in number and severity - a trend Schaffner said might wane if more people opt to drop the lid.

"We don't know this, but it is intriguing," Schaffner said. "Just remember: put the lid down before you flush and always wash your hands."

When is the last time you seen a toilet with a lid in hospitals, restaurants or any other businesses?

I have been thinking about this for a long time, but reading this particular story and thinking of a comment to leave, I have now become fully aware that I do not have a life anymore.

My favorite is a restroom where you wash your hands, dry them with a dryer then find the door opens IN rather than out and you have no paper towel to use on the door handle. McDonalds - take note! Most all of McD's restaurants are like this.

Stick your butt in the dishwasher. Another Yahoo article last week said it can sanitize anything.

Vapors from flushing can fill a bathroom; remember that when you look at your toothbrush hanging there.

but if you put the lid down... wouldn't all those germs get on the inside of the lid... ?? and don't you touch the lid with your fingers to lift it and your back when you sit down to use it...??

Wow! Can't believe the human species is still here. Perhaps if we eliminate flushing by going back to outhouses, we can solve the problem.

We can put a man on the moon but we can't make a toilet that sprays a disinfectant when its flushed ? , And on the subject of toilets , How many of you have had to install one of the low water flow toilets that the goverment made us buy thats suppose to conserve water that instead of flushing 1 time you have to flush 3 times to get it to flush !?

That's why you should keep your toothbrush in your underwear drawer!

Myth busters proved that already. They found fecal particles in the tooth brushes and the nasty particles also traveled out as far as the kitchen counter...ewwww. Maybe having an outhouse isn't such a bad idea after all.

I think that these infections have increased not because more people leave the lid up but because more people have weaker immune systems from going to the doctor everytime they feel a little sick and getting prescription antibiotics all the time , where I work there are a lot of people and half of them are always sick, they get sick so easily they are also the same ones who go running to the doctor at the first sign of the sniffles to get some prescription. The other half will get a cold once evey couple of years and just ride it out, they don't often get sick because when they were sick before they let their body fight it off and get stronger. I myself get sick with a cold or stomach thing maybe only once every 7 or 8 years. I'm not saying leave the lid up, you should always put it down and always wash your hands I am just saying what I think the reason for the increase is.

My toilets are in their own room, modern homes now have what is known as a water closet, the sink and shower are protected by a door. It is the future, the sink and toilet should never be in the same room.

I worry more about restaurant toilets. Those signs, "Employees must wash hands" -- HA! I've been in restaurant bathrooms where I wouldn't touch any fixtures, they're so filthy. I always take wipes and hand sanitizer but I bet more than one case of the trots has been spread by those servers and cooks.

So I guess farting into the coffee pot at work is also frowned upon.

So if you put the lid down all the crap is sprayed on the lid so the next person lifts the lid and gets crap on their hands, sits down and gets crap on their back when they lean against it.

When I'm done peeing, I make sure the door to the toilet cubicle is already open, before flushing the toilet with or without lids, then I hold my breath and quickly rush out before the full blast of flushing takes place.

So...we have to change all the lidless & automatic toilets and incorporate a 'flush and run' strategy?
    • Steve  •  1 mth 22 days ago
I really could have gone the rest of my day or new year without knowing this.
