    Is Halloween the New Christmas?

In days of old, the sight of houses covered in over-the-top light decorations, miles and miles of yard displays and extravagant spending on treats and sweets meant only one thing:  Christmas was near.

Not anymore.  Now, the celebration begins two months earlier, in October, for Halloween.

The holiday that once meant just quaint trick-or-treating, a costume contest or two and maybe a bob for an apple is now second only to Christmas when it comes to celebrating, according to a survey from the National Retail Federation.

Nearly 69 percent of Americans say they intend to celebrate the holiday this Monday, Oct. 31, the highest amount in the survey's nine-year history.

Nearly half of those celebrating will decorate their homes and-or yard, and each will spend an average $72.31 on decorations, costumes and candy, a figure second only to the amount spent by individuals on Christmas décor.

Need more proof that Santa Claus and Rudolph have ghosts and goblins close on their heels?

Check out this Riverside, Calif., home whose owners  have strung thousands of lights to create a sea of singing pumpkin faces, tombstones and hand-carved pumpkins for trick-or-treaters', and passing cars', delight.

There's no sounds of "Silent Night" or even "Jingle Bells" here, however.  This Halloween light show is set to the tunes of the LMFAO hit pop song "Party Rock Anthem."

The same house was decked out last year in the same lights but tuned to what could be considered more of the Halloween version of a Christmas jingle: "Thriller," by Michael Jackson.

Do you go all out for Halloween?  Can your house top even this Halloween light display?

Then send us your photos to prove it!  Click here to submit photos of the lights, hanging skeletons, pumpkins, goblins and ghosts making your home a Halloween trick, or treat.

We'll feature our favorite photos here on GMA.Yahoo.com in the days ahead.

christmas has been ruined by overloaded commercialism and consumer spending so its just a matter of time when all 'holiday' success or importance will be determined by the $'s spent

Ever since the Christians stole the holiday from the pagans, it's gone downhill.

That's nice, D....As for my family, we all get together and have a great time visiting, laughing, just enjoying everyones company. We don't exchange gifts....Just enjoy the day for what it's meant to be

I don't mind the halloween lights and decorations. What irks me is stores are already putting up Christmas decorations, and we haven't even hit Thanksgiving yet. It's weird to my family to go into a store with a mix of all three going on at the same time. Really, goblins, jack-o-lanterns, pilgrims, turkeys, and Christmas trees and ornaments? Halloween villages and Nativities? Yuck!

In the US, holidays = profit. I agree, seeing X-mas decorations in October, and even some in September, is ridiculous. I'm considering putting a pumpkin on top of my X-mas tree this year, with a basket of eggs underneath it, and then decorate it with turkeys and cupids. That should cover just about everything, and I can it at the store in one trip. . .

to paraphrase the poet lewis black, thanksgiving used to be its own holiday and santa claus wasn't poking his @$$ into it!!

Tell me about it. So I ran in to homedepot October 1st with my oldest (10) and my youngest (5) and as we walk in they both go "mommy mommy look there's Santa!" It was wonderful to hear their excitement but really not even flipping Halloween yet. Ohhh and shall I mention the Halloween section? A poor measly tiny section....their bathrooms are bigger the the Halloween section it's just wow!!!

Most people do not think about Satan when they are out celebrating Halloween. They are just out celebrating with friends. For the adults, it's a fun way to dress up, be silly, and just HAVE SOME FUN! The kids certainly aren't thinking about Satan. They are just happy to be dressed up, and running the neighborhood after dark with every other kid in the neighborhood----scoring a bunch of candy. Most people are NOT celebrating SATAN. I would also venture to say that most everyone DOES NOT KNOW THE ORIGINAL STORY that brought about the October 31, HALLOWEEN.

That's fine for you. Let others who feel it is dangerous have their opinion and opt-out
      • Brian 6 mths ago
One doesn't have to think of Satan to be doing his will- we do it by nature. That's kinda why the human race and God are at odds....

Spending money for nothing with money you do not have to impress people you do not like and for nothing.

And I thought St. Valentine's Day is the new Thanksgiving.

Why can't I have cool neighbors like that? All I've got on my street are drug addicts and juvenile delinquents. :-(

I love Halloween. No big dinners to worry about making, no presents to worry about kids not liking, no family fights to dread....just kids out in crazy costumes begging for candy. The best thing EVER!

Never underestimate the power of our consumer-oriented culture to try to turn any holiday into a shopping frenzy!

Christmas is no different. Rather than quiet religious observance, now charges of heathenism are leveled against anyone that does not want to spend hundreds, or thousands, of dollars on decorations, gifts and parties. The irony being that it is technically not even the most important Christian holy day!

That honor goes to Easter, which is now observed with giant inflatable rabbits and "Easter" eggs that you can buy at any big box store.

Money and religion, two great tastes that taste great together.

So why should we be surprised that Halloween has been super-commercialized? It has all the key ingredients: kids, family activities and treats. A little marketing and neighborhood peer pressure and voila! What'll it be, Trick or Treat suckers?
    • IMWATCHIN  •  6 mths ago
No, it is not. How stupid to confuse people's interest and zest for two very different holidays, although Halloween is not a holiday to begin with. Never was.
Commercialism has taken people to spending levels they need not go to.
I enjoy Halloween tremendouisly but love Christmas and the Christmas season far more!
    • socal  •  6 mths ago
Yes, Halloween is much better than Christmas. Much more meaningful and fun (Hey, we're all gonna die, let's remember that sometimes so we can live life to the fullest). Halloween parties are a lot more fun. Also, adults get to experience the pleasure of giving without receiving, while children get the goodies (this is the way it should be). Finally, it is honestly based on a pagan holiday, unlike Christmas, which actually is based on a pagan holiday, but we pretend it isn't. The Jeebus junkies can celebrate their Jesus Ween (I'm not kidding, some evangelical freaks have already come up with this). Why not? There's as much chance that Jesus was born on October 31 as December 25.
    • David R  •  6 mths ago
Why would an article postulate that 'Halloween is the new Christmas, or even ask it, when it mentions three sentences later that it is second to Christmas. Just trying to catch people's eyes.

The only reason "THRILLER" became the iconic album that it is is because of Halloween, zombies and John Landis, the director of the "THRILLER" video.
