News Anchor Bitten by Dog Received 70 Stitches, Mouth Stitched Shut

News Anchor Bitten by Dog Received 70 Stitches, Mouth Stitched Shut (ABC News)

The Colorado news anchor bitten by a rescued dog live on air posted on her Facebook page that she received 70 stitches on her face and is unable to speak because her mouth is stitched shut.

Kyle Dyer, a veteran morning news anchor for NBC News' Denver affiliate KUSA, was reporting on an uplifting story of a dog rescued from a frozen reservoir when the dog bit her on the lip Feb. 8.

When Dyer bent down to kiss the dog's nose, the 85-pound Argentine Mastiff named Max turned his head and bit into Dyer's face, as his owner and rescuer watched in disbelief.

Dyer has received an outpouring of support from thousands of well-wishers on her Facebook page. Over the weekend, she took to the page to update them on her status.

"After a 4 hour surgery, I have 70 stitches in my upper lip, lower lip and nose," Dyer wrote. "I am unable to talk because my mouth is stitched shut to allow for the skin graft to take and get the blood circulating in my lips again."

Dyer thanked the medical team at Denver Health Medical center for taking "excellent care" of her. She was released from the hospital on Thursday and is at home recovering.

"I can't say thank you enough for all of your notes and prayers of encouragement and love," Dyer wrote. "They give me great strength, which along with my faith, will see me through a successful recovery!"

Dyer is scheduled to return to the doctor this week and to undergo another procedure in the next few weeks and is already looking to the future and her return to TV.

"Once I'm all healed, I will return to my friends at 9NEWS who have been remarkably supportive as have viewers and friends throughout the country," she wrote.

I am very sorry that she had to learn (in a very painful lesson) NOT to stick your face in the face of a dog you don't know!

I am very sorry that Kyle had to go through this but her common sense was sorely lacking. The dog didn't know her and she should have known better than to come at him like that. Many dogs would have felt threatend and reacted the same way. Good luck with your recovery.

Why the hell would you put your face up to a strange dog's face? Much less one that has suffered unknown past abuses#$%$
      • Leo C 3 mths ago
I dont even put my face up to kitten.
      • Ed 3 mths ago
True, you can't put your face in a strange dog's face.

However, he won't mind you sniffing his butt !!!

and more key is the poor dog never met the woman before and was in a strange environment (cameras, lights, stage, etc.)

I love animals, esp. dogs, but I have never gotten the urge to kiss them - either on the nose or on the mouth! It's common sense not to have your face that close to all that canine teeth!
      • Lynne 3 mths ago
A child has their face that close to a dogs all the time.....do they deserve to have their nose ripped off by a dog??
      • Stacey 3 mths ago
Lynne it's not about "deserving" or not - it's a dog for God sake! they don't use logic, they're animals!! keep your child away from dogs then!!!!!

NEVER,NEVER get in a dogs face. Vewry dumb move.
      • Peter G 3 mths ago
Dumb move for that type of breed but usually not a prob with the vast majority of breeds. That being said 100% of dogs lick their butts so i never go anywhere near their face! Ewe!

I did that myself to a German Shepherd. Learned my lesson and taught my children that at a very young age. Never approach a dog that does not know you. Especially don't put your face to his, he'll get spooked and bite. And when you want to put your hand out to a strange dog, make a fist so you don't get your fingers taken off. We live, we learn.
    • Steve  •  Gillette, Wyoming  •  3 mths ago
Okay. Answer me this? You are told from childhood not to put your face up to or near a dogs face, Especially a strange dog! Apparently she is at fault and the dog owner should not be responsible for this! Let this be a lesson to all you people. Keep your face out of strange animals faces or you will be bit!!!

She is lucky it wasn't an adult Chimpanzee she was trying to kiss.

Tough lesson learned here! I feel sorry for her, but you should know better than to move toward a strange dog, particularly a large one and leave yourself exposed as she did.

Anyone who tries to kiss an animal on the face that it in a state of fear and also doesn't know her is not thinking with a clear head.

The dog was probably nervous, being around a bunch of strangers, lights, cameras, etc... Blame the news anchor, not the dog...

I don't care if you know the animal or not never put your face close enough to his face. Any dog can bite us.
    • Old Hurst resident  •  3 mths ago
I am sorry that she has to endure this. But she had no business sticking her face in the dog's face. That was stupid. People do many stupid things around dogs- often trying to give animals human traits. They are DOGS. Treat them like dogs and they will be your beat friend forever. Treat them like humans and you will have a lot of problems and screw up the dog..

I read what the Dog Whisperer had to say about this. The dog was full of nervous tension & she didn't respect his space. I'm very sorry that she was seriously injured, but I'm glad she'll recover. The dog was released to it's owner. I blame poor judgement.
    • DemNoMore  •  3 mths ago
Wow, 70 stitches. Good luck Kyle, hope you are much more careful around animals in the future.

Lesson learned. Hey, I made the same dumb move too. But it was with my own dog and it was a chihuahua. Glad I didn't have to pay as much as her. I still have the scar on my lip to remind me to never do something that stupid again.

Argentine Mastiff's are bread to be protectors, hunters and family dogs. They are great with people they know. This dog was bred to hunt Pumas, and you're blaming it for biting a stranger that stuck it's face next to it's mouth? Blame the reporter for not knowing how to behave around a strange dog...
