    Punxsutawney Phil Isn't Always Right

Nearly five thousand revelers hoping for an early spring were disappointed  today after Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow.

But those winter jackets may be able to go in the closet sooner than the forecasting groundhog has to say.

It turns out the ultimate prognosticator- and his copycat counterparts- are wrong more often than they are right.

An analysis by the National Climatic Data Center found there is no correlation between Phil's predictions and the actual weather.

But don't tell that to the members of the Groundhog club's Inner Circle in Punxsutawney, Pa.

"I would argue with the comments he doesn't have a great track record," Jon Johnston, Phil's "Chief Healthman" told ABCNews.com. "They're missing the point then. It's always winter somewhere."

And more often than not, Phil agrees.

The well-fed, revered groundhog also has a penchant for seeing his shadow. Ever since the tradition began in 1887, Phil (and his ancestors) saw their shadows 99 times, while predicting an early spring only 16 times. There was no record for nine of the years.

It's not accurate. Holy #$%$...why didn't anybody tell me?!
      • anonymous 3 mths ago
Sorry we forgot to tell you. It is because we were suppose to tell you on April 19, 2006 at 11am, but we had a scheduling conflict, at the very same time we also had scheduled the meeting to decide whether or not we should inform you that you were adopted. We Voted against telling you that, It was the largest turn out we ever had, a quarter Million People voted, and then we just forgot to reschedule the whole Ground Hog Day Thing.

It's a fun tradition that is harmless and humorous. If but for a few minutes in a year, we stop and watch in anticipation for an answer to something we know is bogus, we have relieved ourselves of the day to day stresses of life.

Lighten up people.. life isn't meant to be serious 24/7/365. Smile a little and have some fun

They have so much fun with this! It's just fun watching people have fun - like people laugh in a derogatory way at those who pull tractors and such. But, they're having fun!

        that's what it's about.

Spring is actually about to happen in six weeks, anyway, it's fixed. But it's fun to watch and wish. So let them have their fun and we shall have ours.

It's just like watching the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Fun. Only a fool would take it seriously.

6 weeks from today will take you to the middle of march and that is when spring begins
      • glop 3 mths ago
Just what I said; but it's still a lot of fun, and that's the whole point of it as I can see. I have known a few, however, who take it seriously.
      • Laurie 3 mths ago
Actually, if you count 6 weeks from today, it would be March 15th and Spring doesn't officially start until March 20th, almost another week away, which would make it more like 7 weeks. Who cares anyway? I don't take much stock in what the Groundhog predicts. With all the cameras and lights, it isn't any wonder he sees his shadow every year!! REALLY!!!!

It is a fun celebration in the middle of winter. You who take this serious need to lighten up and get a life.

it would be fun if I hadn't read last year that "Phil" is just a poster-hog for a group of snobs in fancy clothes that sit around and DECIDE whether or not Phil sees his shadow instead of letting the groundhog walk oout of his hole and figure it out himself... obviously he could use the exercise...

Totally agree, Fossil! I love seeing that roly-poly groundhog. :)

      Its a Groundhog Day Miracle!!!

I read all the comments on the first page I saw listed, and NO ONE dragged politics into their posts...what a refreshing way to start the day. :)

Either way--it seems like this day just keeps happening again and again and again.

What ever happened to fun in this country? Must everything be politically correct to stop all the angry remarks about such things as Groundhog Day? We all know it is for fun or don't we?

I would believe what Phil says before I would believe anything that comes out of the US congress.

How can he not help but to see his shadow with all the TV lights?
    • DEB  •  Kansas City, Missouri  •  3 mths ago
It's an event and a very successful one. The restaurants are full, hotels rooms non-existent and for one day a tiny town in PA has the world's attention. It's brilliant for what it is - a very, very successful event marketing promotion. Do I believe it, of course not just as I don't consult the tooth fairy for my dental work! Have fun with it, that is all it is meant to be! Those small business owners love it!

Actually, we have a groundhog that showed up last summer, who my husband feeds. He (hubby, not the groundhog) got upset when our guy didn't show up in Oct, thinking he got killed. I reminded him that they hibernate. So is today normally when they come out of hibernation? And if so, I wonder if our guy will show up. He is the cutest thing.

How can winter last 6 more weeks if winter didn't happen ?
    • Kris  •  Westbury, New York  •  3 mths ago
If it's sunny out, you'll see his shadow. If it's cloudy or raining, he won't. Simple. Poor groundhog is ignored the other 364 days (well, 365 this year for leap year).
    • DennisW  •  Jersey City, New Jersey  •  3 mths ago
i wish we had a groundhog that could predict whether congress and senate would do its job but thats asking for to much
    • Jonathan  •  3 mths ago
How about the percent of forcasts we get from these weather people that are correct? I am sure these groundhogs are just as accurate as those groundhogs on the news everyday!
