Queen Elizabeth II Celebrates 60-Year Anniversary

In 1952 the woman known today as Queen Elizabeth II was just Elizabeth, a 25-year-old member of England's royal family visiting a remote village in Kenya.

When word came on Feb. 6 of that year that her father, George VI, had died, Elizabeth cut her trip short and flew home to London.  She was greeted at the airport by her country's then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill and she was crowned Queen Elizabeth II.

Today, 60 years later, the 85-year-old Queen marked her Diamond Jubilee anniversary with a message thanking the British people for their support, and pledging to continue her dedication to serving them and people around the world.

"I am writing to thank you for the wonderful support and encouragement that you have given to me and Prince Philip over these years," she wrote today in a message to the nation, which was released by Buckingham Palace. "In this special year, as I dedicate myself anew to your service, I hope that we will all be reminded of the power of togetherness and the convening strength of family, friendship and good neighborliness, examples of which I have been fortunate to see throughout my reign."

The Queen and her husband Prince Philip, whom she wed in 1947, marked the anniversary Sunday by attending a church service on her private Sandringham estate in Norfolk, outside London.

The anniversary makes Queen Elizabeth, already Britain's oldest serving monarch, the country's longest-serving monarch after Queen Victoria, who reigned for more than 63 years.  The queen, mother to four and grandmother to eight, has now outlasted 11 U.S. presidents.

"Queen Elizabeth II rates among the best, in fact, better than the best," Dickie Arbiter, former press secretary to the Queen, told ABC News.

"The queen doesn't change.  The queen adapts, and that's why it survives," he said of the monarch.

Celebrations of her Diamond Jubilee officially begin today when the queen and Philip, 90, visit a nursery school and the town hall in the town of King's Lynn.

The celebrations will continue throughout the year as members of the royal family - from Prince Charles to Prince William and Kate Middleton - travel around the world to take part in ceremonies and events honoring the queen.  The queen herself and Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, will embark on a tour of England in March.

The main event, the 2012 Diamond Jubilee weekend, will be held in June and feature a star-studded concert and boat pageant on the Thames river with a 1,000-strong flotilla.

The Palace also today released a special set of portraits of the queen and Philip, taken by John Swannell in the Centre Room at Buckingham Palace last December, to mark the Jubilee. Two new photographs of the queen, wearing the same necklace Queen Victoria wore in her own Diamond Jubilee portrait in 1897, were also released.

Saw the same thing in our home -- and though our family was here before and fought in the American Revolution against the British -- to celebrate and appreciate a heritage that comes from class , character and honor and is part of the foundations of America as opposed to being part of the flotsam and jetsam that followed and reflects it breeding in daily life now. Ignorant, undereducted, lacking balance and any sense of independence and self reliance. Ahh the WASP days are not over yet! And if this is an insult to those jealous of the successful and those that have carriage and stature -- go pound sand!

@NeilB: You and I have GOT to be about the same age -- I remember her Coronation too. Except I didn't watch it on TV. My family hadn't gotten their first TV at the time she was crowned, and I had to listen to it on the RADIO!

Menycats. Sorry to say, but you have a couple of years on me. I find it fun to reflect on the past. We have seen a lot of history during our lifetime.

I hope so too,.....hohoho, I want to see you broken because of paying taxes for this crap !!!
      • AMA 3 mths ago
@Eduard, you can go to Middle East where they don't tax your pay. If the law say so, then i'll do so. With or without monarch every country depend on taxation to deliver a better governance. Wake up from your dream.

Unlike the rest of you trolls, I think the Queen is beautiful. She has had to put up with alot in 60 years, and she has managed to handle it all with amazing grace and dignity. Back in the 70s there was some crazy guy who broke into the Palace and sat on the end of her bed, declaring his devotion to her. She didn't panic, but got him some cigarettes that he asked for, and discreetly notified security. The dude was taken away. No panic, no harm done, problem solved.

Those of you who make fun of the elderly, just remember someday soon you will be old, and the laugh will be on you.

I remember a news story about the Queen. She likes to slip her leash once in awhile and walk around town by herself. One day a woman stopped her and said, "You look just like the Queen!" Liz answered, "That's most re-assuring."

Seems in today's economy the British could make better use of their money than support an archaic tradition that has no realistic value any longer....and why in the world do we Americans care in the least about the British Royalty....I thought we cut those ties back in 1776!!

One of a hand full of world figures with character, honor and tradition not groveling before the world for handouts for their country based on “should otherwise be forgotten” atrocities endemic of war from which endless campaigns based on alleged world guilt are manipulated to generate phoney alliances. The Brits moved on from the Blitz, the Germans moved on from Dresden and we too shall eventually move on from 911--

A true allied friend of America , steadfast and supportive of America . There will be cultural swine that will object to praise of such a steadfast friend only because of their own inane jealousies and lower rung on humanities political and intellectual evolution.

Some posters put down the Queen. Her grandson Harry actually served in a war zone and William has a dangerous military job in sea rescue. There are very few congressmen in this country who's children or grandchildred serve in the military much less a war zone. None of Romney's sons did and Newt ducked the draft. Clinton also ducked the draft. The queen herself took part in military duty during ww2 when she was the crown princess. Although a woman so did not go to a war zone she did not think it beneath her to drive a truck in the transport section of the reserves.
