'Soul Train' Founder Commits Suicide: Report

Don Cornelius, the man who created Soul Train, was reportedly found dead Wednesday morning at his Los Angeles home.  Police sources tell TMZ.com that Cornelius appears to have taken his own life; sources say he died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  He was 75.

Cornelius created "Soul Train" and hosted the show in national syndication from 1971 to 1993.  It was the first real venue on American TV for soul music, and as the show's writer and producer, as well as host, Cornelius played a vital role in bringing stars like James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson to a wider audience.  Some have described the show as "a black American Bandstand," though Cornelius was not a fan of that comparison.  As the host, he was known for the catchphrase with which he closed each episode: "I'm Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul!"

"Soul Train," which ceased airing in 2006, also spun off the Soul Train Music Awards and the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.   Its most famous theme song, "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)," by MFSB became a massive pop hit in 1974.

I bet he had health problems and decided not to carry on. As I age myself, I tend to look upon those who end their life in much more sympathetic terms.

they will see what sad and pathetic human beings they are, when people come here to belittle people it is a reflection of their useless self-worth, in essence it makes them feel superior to come here and spew vitriol

There's no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, .The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults., according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock University in Ontario.

There's no gentle way to put it. People who give in to racism and prejudice may have brilliant minds. Jessie Jackson is certainly no slouch in the IQ department, but he is one of the biggest racists around.

Its a shame that so many racists posted to this thread. I am a white guy and I used to watch and enjoy Soul train, and back then people actually sang songs...none of this rap garbage.

My wife and I loved this show. We would wait for the Line Dance and we loved to try to guess the names of the two chosen to unscamble the famous person. RIP Don. You were an awesome man. Soul music lost an ICON today.

I grew up watching Soul Train when I was a kid and love the dance line. It took me awhile to figure out that the cameras were more biased towards the female dancers, as opposed to the male dancers, since the females seemed to get more camera time. Soul Train and American Bandstand were the orginal music shows. MTV and VH-1 started off that way, but all they show now is reality mess. I wish I could go back to the 70's and 80's when the music and people were genuine.

To see someone as iconic as Don take his own, hurts...especially when he gave us all something, that can never be taken away...a genre of Music that was wide spread and listened too throughout the entire world..., who doesn't listen to R&B now!!! RIP Don, you will be missed

Forget the color of our skin today--know that the saddest thing to do is commit a suicide. May we all learn to cope better with the problems that create havoc in our lives. May mr. Corneilus rest in--peace.--to all the rest of us that are still here---"i hope you dance!" --and celebrate a good life!

Wow. Sad news. Being a teenage "white guy" in the 70's (disco era), me and my friends tuned in to watch Don's show to catch a glimpse of performers. In those days, you never got to see groups unless they were on TV shows like Soul Train, Midnight Special, or American Bandstand. No internet, cell phones, small recorders (to sneak into shows) , NOTHING. To see some one perform on these shows was a real treat. There was such a lack of electronic media, me and my friends thought KC and the Sunshine Band were a group of bad a-- brothers until we saw them on tv. Too funny. News like this makes you feel like you are approaching your time. Rest in peace Don.
