Courthouse Gold Heist Nets $3 Million in Historic Nuggets

Police in Yreka, Calif. are still searching for answers today after thieves stole $3 million worth of historical golden nuggets from a courthouse.

The stolen gold collection items date back some 100 years and are historic artifacts from the booming gold rush that took place here in this Northern California "golden city," so nicknamed for its major role in the rush.

Police believe the thieves broke into the Siskiyou County courthouse through an open window at around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to Allison Giannini, the county spokeswoman.

The break-in was not discovered until the police came to work at 7 a.m. Wednesday and saw a broken display case and discovered the gold was missing.  An alarm on the case failed to sound during the burglary, Giannini said.

"We are working vigorously," she said. "We want our gold back."

The missing gold was a compilation of nuggets from every mine in the county. All of the pieces were donated by minors or relatives of minors. The only purchased item in the collection was a 28 ounce piece of gold resembling a shoe. It was bought in 1913 for about $550 dollars.

Wayne Hammar, the Siskiyou County treasurer and tax collector,  said that while the monetary value of the gold is substantial, what matters more is the loss of the county's heritage.

Roughly 740 ounces of gold were stolen from the case.  "They are specimen-quality pieces," he said. "It is our history, these folks have taken a big part of our history. "

The county is located near the Oregon border and was founded to serve the gold mining industry. It was a key location for the historic West Coast Gold Rush. Despite the large monetary value of the items, Giannini says loosing this part of their history is devastating.

"You can't put a value on our history. It is invaluable to us really," Giannini told ABC News. "It is irreplaceable."

I lived in Yreka in the 1980's and this display was just not something you'd want to mess with. It was a bit of history, but now days, with the huge number of Meth-heads everywhere, nothing is sacred.
What's more embarrasing, the Police station is less than 2 blocks away.

and, when I lived up there, you didn't even have to lock up your car or home. It was a small town, and if you stole sanything, everyone would see you with it.

This is the most STUPID thing I have ever heard, Gold with a value of that much and no county official EVER thought about having it under secure control, to me that is so bad that i think anyone who had any responsibility for security and control at that facility should be fired and impeached , those individuals are dummer than the dumest.

Losing doesn't have 2 o's. Miners doesn't have an o in it. What is your obsession with o's? Go back to school and learn how to spell.

It unbelieveable to me some local dope fiend didn't steal umm sooner. Come in during the day, leave a window open or maybe your homeboy is locked-up and the county jail sends him on the regular work detail to do the janitorial work at the local civic building in this little town; since they can't afford the cost of private janitors these days. He makes sure the windows open as they are usually last to leave the building after hours.

When was the last time the alarm was tested anyway, sounds like a straight-up inside job, with maybe three or four individuals, now lets see either how clever they are or how stupid, time will tell.

How do you break in thru an open window? Climb in, step in, even jump in but what got broke other than Barney Fifes pride.

They are more concerned with the historic value than the monetary value of the gold?
