Top Susan G. Komen Official Resigns After Planned Parenthood Flap

A top official at the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer foundation resigned today following the charity's decision to reverse its policy barring funding for Planned Parenthood.

Karen Handel, a former Republican gubernatorial candidate in Georgia, denied in her resignation letter that she had anything to do with the decision to end funding for Planned Parenthood, which she says was made under guidelines formulated before she was hired.

Critics of the foundation's decision linked the move to Handel, a vocal opponent of abortion and Planned Parenthood.

"I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it. I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen's future and the women we serve," she wrote in the letter that was obtained by several media outlets. "However, the decision to update our granting model was made before I joined Komen, and the controversy related to Planned Parenthood has long been a concern to the organization. Neither the decision nor the changes themselves were based on anyone's political beliefs or ideology."

"What was a thoughtful and thoroughly reviewed decision - one that would have indeed enabled Komen to deliver even greater community impact - has unfortunately been turned into something about politics. This is entirely untrue. This development should sadden us all greatly," she added.

    Handel declined a severance package.

The Susan G. Komen foundation confirmed Handel's resignation and acknowledged "mistakes" in the way it handled the controversy that erupted last week.

"We have made mistakes in how we have handled recent decisions and take full accountability for what has resulted, but we cannot take our eye off the ball when it comes to our mission," the organization's chief executive and founder, Nancy Brinker, said in a statement. "Today I accepted the resignation of Karen Handel… I have known Karen for many years, and we both share a common commitment to our organization's lifelong mission, which must always remain our sole focus. I wish her the best in future endeavors."

Can we all finally go back to donating to the American Cancer Society? They don't spend all this money on marketing and they are dedicated to the cause of curing ALL cancer. Oh, and no past/present relationship to PP.

We should continually look at all of these huge charities to see where the money is actually going. Greed can work its slimy fingers into anything, that's what it's good at.

So many people who were against the de-funding decision up and quit at first, that the decision to do this looked fishy from the start. Komen also defunded about $12 million of embryonic stem cell research last year too. Sounds super fishy that all these changes went into affect after a hyper-drive pro-lifer came on.

Komen gives 20% of the donations to the cause. The rest is eaten up in administrative salaries and marketing. They are a very effective, massive marketing organization. If you really want to help, go give your money directly to a hospital or to PP. These charities sometimes get too big for their own good. Look at the Red Cross controversies over the years....

Under the rules of 501 C3 organizations, and FOIA--it is very easy to find out where the money goes. Minimum money to "walk for the cause" $2500.00 which Korman would be more than happy to help you raise with their professional fund raisers...ummmm--And at the minimum need drivers, equipment movers, and food providers to support the walk....and advertisers and I am sure the shirts are not provided for free.....

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Personally, I think Handel''s statement is full of misrepresentations and is a disingenuous attempt to whitewash herself. II'll be very interested to see if the Handel debacle has a permanent effect on SGK. They have certainly lost my support, as I no longer have confidence in them, and there are other organizations that I can donate to.

Yes, it was about as disingenuous as Planned Parenthood claiming that losing $700k from Komen would mean poor women wouldn’t get breast screenings….while Planned Parenthood is sitting on $500 million in cash, rakes in over $1 billion in annual revenues, and banked over $18 million in profits last year. (read their annual financial report, easily available on PP's website)

Planned Parenthood could have easily covered the ‘lost’ Komen revenue which is paltry compared to their massive bank account, but they chose instead to politicize the dispute in order to whip their loyal supporters into a frenzy and raise even more donations. And it worked.

women are often embarrassed to talk about STD with a family dr, PP is a great place to get checked. I used PP myself in college many times for that. (condoms dont protect against all STD). never got birth control or an abortion there. close PP, and you cut off that option for young women, and STD rates will rise again.

Komen should have kept out of politics. They will never fully recover from this.

someone finally made the right call. As much as she denies it - she knows she was to blame for this fiasco. She has no business being involved in charity OR politics for that matter. Now if netflix would just fire Reed for his stupidity. netflix used to be cool. but for both organizations...the damage has been done. I will give my money DIRECTLY to those in need. I am no longer going to finance hatred and politics with SGK. have you seen the salaries they make? 25 cents or less out of every dollar goes towards those in need. The rest buys big homes and fancy cars for "admin". In the future I will go into a hospital and talk with the patients and hand them my money DIRECTLY!!! As a bonus I will KNOW whom I am helping! and those in need will no longer have to jump through hoops to get it. They have enough on their plates already!
      • Noneyo 3 mths ago
if the "leaders" of SGK were truly interested in helping others then they would donate their time free of charge - NO BLOATED SALARIES! but instead they are blood sucking vampires - and you inadvertently finance them all for a "good" cause! not the public's fault though...if they said to you at the time of donation "Hey I am going to take 75% of your donation to finance my lavish lifestyle - then give the rest to someone in need" - you may have walked away and given elsewhere! but they NEVER disclose that before you decide to give.

Nancy Brinker and Karen Handel made this decision and Handel is the one falling on her sword. Brinker was the leader who made this happen and she must also resign. The organization is damaged and will not recover until the head of the snake is cut off.

Only TWENTY-SEVEN CENTS from your one dollar ever makes it out of Komen for research or cancer prevention. If you're happy with that, then keep giving to Komen. They've been a fraud for years now and should be investigated.

What they should have done, if abortion was the reason was 1st was put ads out saying that Komen was thinking of pulling funding for this reason and that the foundation didn't want to offend givers by telling them, but they needed to make sure of where money was going before pulling funding. Let that circulate around the net for a week, then when they pulled the funding it would not have looked as political--- but this was an unthoughtout political move that backfired--- their support is gone and anything they do now just seems desperate!
    • dem  •  3 mths ago
They choose to side with a minority position due to the pressures, threats, and political tactics used to force the defunding of PP position. Then they say this was not a political decision. This is fuzzy republican math. 1+1=3 IT WAS and IS POLITICAL

Whichever side you are on, I think that up until now no one even considered that they were funding what most people would consider "politically activist" causes. They opened a can of worms, it will polarize their former support base, and there is NO way to put the lid back on that Pandora's box...

This resignation still does not address Komen's problems. Komen should shutdown and let other more independent charities take charge. The color for breast cancer is not pink.
