Mom Allegedly Drags Son by Car for Missing School Bus

    ABC News' Katti Gray reports:

A Woods Cross, Utah, woman was arrested for allegedly forcing her 9-year-old son to walk alongside her car as she pulled him along by his belt and steered him toward school after he'd missed the school bus.

Police said the boy could have been hit by traffic driving in the opposite direction on the two-lane road and have turned the case over to the Davis County District Attorney's office, which will decide whether to charge the mother with child endangerment.

"She was going at a slow enough speed that the child was able to keep pace with the vehicle," Woods Cross Police Chief Greg Butler said. A neighbor phoned his department about what the mother was doing.

Her name is not being released because she has not been charged, and the child - who is not deemed to be in imminent danger - remains in his mother's care, Butler said.

"I know my mom was upset when we'd miss the school bus, but she never drug us there," said Danny Rhodes, a parent.

"I can't imagine any circumstance that would permit a parent to punish by dragging [with] a belt," said Cassandra Jedd, a mother of three.

"School's hard enough. Granted you have so many stresses. We do too. It's a matter of pulling together," Jedd said.

I pulled the same crap (tried to skip school by missing the bus ) when I was 11...my dad took me to work and had me put in a full day painting a garage....never did it again !

This..good lesson...The mom in this story...not so much. She reminds me of a relative of mine....she gets mad when she gets put out of her way, when she should be making sure her little kids get out the door on time for school....so she goes over the top. Your dad taught you a proper lesson....this woman didn't teach this kid anything. BTW the relative of mine - her kids have been in trouble now from everything to arson to skipping school..her methods have backfired.

ah I drove my child to school after she missed the bus one to many times in my bathrobe, coffee cup in hand and curlers in my hair held her had all the way to her locker and classroom. Kissed her on the cheek and talked to the teacher about her for 5 min. only happened once.

If you missed the bus my father would look over the newspaper and say "Believe me...you don't want to stay here". Hence...you started hoofing it to school.

LOL...That's TRUE parenting skills right there. That's the type of old school logic that parents today need to use more often!

I had visions of the kid slipping under the tires of the moving car and her mom driving over the kids skull with the back tire. Id guess that her mom treated her the same way and thats why she things its appropriate behavior.

I'm sure everyone did, who would read "mother gently escorted her son to school by pulling on his belt with her car."

Down on the farm, up early to feed livestock, milk the cow and then cleanup, eat breakfast before running for the bus, miss it and you stayed home and worked outside all day no rest and I'm a teenage girl.

AMEN, sister! I grew up in the rural midwest and it was the same for us if we missed the bus. My mother refused to cart us to school if we missed the bus because school was 22mi in the opposite direction (from where my parents worked). Too many PC folks these days find fault with our parents methods, but they worked. You learned very quickly not to screwaround and miss the bus.

There are several serial killers who have the same background as you two so I guess it's a hit and miss.

I don't disagree with the parents of Carly and Nameless Farm Girl at all, because keeping you home and productive is all right...it's just one day...but dragging someone with a car by the belt is not all right.

Jeez! I was cringing when I clicked on the link because I was thinking the kid was being, you know, dragged by his feet or something! So glad to read he wasn't hurt! But ya, when my kid misses the bus, I look at him and say you have two perfectly good feet, better put them to work!

in my mid forties i told my mother how strict she was while growing up. she said she was sorry, i said don't be sorry, i'm glad. thats why am so grounded today.

The headline is misleading. It should read led not dragged. There is a big difference.
    • Boppity  •  3 mths ago
When I read the headline I pictured this kid being dragged behind a fast moving car by a chain, covered in blood and dust.

hahahahahaha Seriously! This is a tad ridiculous. I have to tell this story.... When my son was in Jr High, he skipped school every chance he got ( unbeknownst to me) until that is, I received a summons from probate court for my son's truancy. We showed up for court and the judge asked my son if he knew that his parents could go to jail for what he did, my son said "no sir" then the judge looked at me and asked if I had anything to say, I said "Yes I do! put my son in jail, I'm not the one who skipped school". I thought my kid would faint dead away right then. Then the judge asked him why he didn't tell us that he didn't want to go to school, and my son said, "Cuz, my mom will whoop me, even when it's against the law!" The judge asked, "who told you that"? He told him the kids at school. The judge said ok, I know exactly what punishment you will need then...... You are going home with your mom and she can decide what to do with you, because it's NOT against the law for your mother to discipline you and if I were her I'd make sure you couldn't sit good for about a week! hahahahaha needless to say, he didn't miss school again for years! He's 33 now, but loves to tell that story to his 14 yr old son.. I always told my kids (when they used the "I'll call CPS and tell them you beat me" story) well if I am going to jail, I guess I better make sure there's a reason!

I have to say it, We had to walk ten miles to school up hill both ways

My now 30 year old daughter, threatened me when she was about 10, and after being spanked because she didn't want to go to shcool, that she was going to call the cops. I picked the phone up and started to dial the number for her, she changed her mind and got on the bus. She told the nurse at school that I had beat her that morning. Needless to say, the nurse called me and told me about this, said she had to check for bruises. When I asked if she had found any, the nurse said that she had not. I told the nurse that she might want to check her the next day (only kidding of course). Too many children use that CPS threat all the time. If they really knew what it meant to be dragged from their home for a minor problem, instead of just listening to a parent, they may think twice before calling CPS.

I want part 2 of this story. Did the kid missed the bus the next day?
    • tex reb  •  3 mths ago
What a dumb article, headline makes it sound like she was dragging him on the ground. This isn't even a story.
    • WhiskeyBum  •  3 mths ago
Unless the kid was off his feet , he wasn't being dragged . He was being led , or pulled , but not dragged .
