The Long War: Are We Safer?

Around the World with Christiane Amanpour debuts as we approach a decade of war in Afghanistan, and the question on the lips of Americans and Afghans alike is "what's next?"

Ten years after the attack on World Trade Center, Osama Bin Laden is dead, but how will this chapter in the longest war in American history be written?

ABC News foreign correspondent Nick Schifrin joins Christiane Amanpour from Kabul, Afghanistan, taking the pulse of that country amidst an explosion of violence at the hands of the resurgent Taliban.

Then a revealing interview with Ahmed Rashid, the world's foremost authority on the Taliban, about the very real concerns over potential violence between the United States uneasy ally Pakistan.

The critical question must be asked: Is war with Pakistan a real possibility?

The Russians could not do it. Why do we always think we can? History. It tells us but we are blind and deaf to it. The Middle East is a TarBaby. Shore up our own borders. Fix this country. Not theirs.
Stay out of Africa. No boots on the ground there. If it can not be killed with a drone...leave it.

Ron Paul is the only one who will do what you are talking about

*WE* are not blind and deaf to history - the idiot in chief was blind and deaf to it when he put us there, but I don't expect much more than we got from him.

Shadowman - why is it that WE know this, but our dumbass leaders do not? Our "Foreign Policy" should be: "AMERICA FIRST" per Donald Trump's stance. I don't see any other country out there helping us when we're in dire straits. Hurricaine Katrina? the Twin Towers/911? Heck, we have Bono rebuilding 1/2 the world thru his charity, but what about Appalachia?????

good report, but what's with the goofy music. i don't want a sound track with my news.
      • Kb 7 mths ago
I agree. The music is completely distracting and doesn't even fit with the tenor of the story. Isn't it enough that things are spinning and camera angles always moving? Ridiculous.

Yeah, I found it hard to concentrate on watching the clip. I kept finding myself straying away and zoning out! I had to force myself to concentrate!

That's what you get when you hire interns or people off the street, or people that do drugs

In the meantime we have SEVERAL THOUSANDS of our people wearing easily identifiable Military Uniforms , fighting against small groups of NON-Descriptive- NON-UNIFORMED terrorists in several parts of the world (mostly in the Mid East ).Our "brilliant leaders" should have learned at least something from the tactics used by the Viet Cong This is a total NO BRAINER. We are playing their game (the terrorists) by our rules , time to change our rules or pack up and head home. Or , AS AN ALTERNATIVE send our politicians and illegal aliens to do the messy stuff.

strap bombs to them and tell them it is humanitarian aid," for liberal's", and green cards for "illegals",
      • creditcollector 7 mths ago
And when we kill one their campanions take their weapon and scream civilian casualities.
      • Mike 7 mths ago
They are NOT terrorists, the are patriots who are fighting to drive the foreign invaders out of their country. The same thing that you and I would do if, say, China invaded the US.
    • QuestionGeek  •  7 mths ago
USA is stupid, stupid, stupid. "Oh yeah, we can bomb you mo fos, and cause our country to go bankrupt, blah blah blah." Meanwhile China is buying up resources around the world in countries like Afghanistan and Brazil and continents like Africa

      • ted j 7 mths ago
        running away doesn't help.
      • Sam 7 mths ago
Leif you are so correct....it is not running away...leaving now would only save lives and make us safer. War spreads hate and is never the answer.

All I can tell you is, my son is in deep #$%$ right now in Afghanistan as a recon Marine and I ask myself every day the same questions you folks are asking today. But right now all I know is that I pray to God that he gets home safe for Christmas, and I would greatly appreciate your kind thoughts and or prayers for all our men and women over there, including my son Paul. I sincerely thank you.

The real threat to this country is Washington D.C. Its failure to establish a win goal in military operations, solve economic problems, forcefully address federal debt and deficit spending, concern itself with the well-being of US citizens, deal with illegal immigration, limit legal immigration and carry out the wishes of the people identifies DC as the greatest threat to the USA.
    • Peter G  •  7 mths ago
I did some research. Asked how many sons/daughters (by blood, NOT relatives) did the parents of 535 Reps in DC, have kids in war now? Including relatives: 11. BY BLOOD? 7.
    • James  •  7 mths ago
Winston Churchill once described the Middle East as "The Infernal Sands." The day our troops leave....the tribal leaders will renew the killing and Afghanistan will again become a living hell hole.
    • Michael  •  7 mths ago
I support our troops, I really do but I have very little faith in what the gov't tells us. And things are rarely the way they portray them to be.

Saddam is dead. Osoma is dead. Time to come home and let these nice folks settle in and fix thier own problems.

Wake up fellow slaves. It is time for the blood of tyrants to flow.
    • rk  •  7 mths ago
There is no war. Wars are fought to be won. This is a police action. A police action costs lives and uses resources without ever achieving a positive outcome (Korea and Vietnam).
    • Lynne  •  7 mths ago
I'm beyond being an octogenarian, and lived through the Depression, and all the wars since WW 11, and we've had some lousy politicians, but none can compare to the idiots we have in Congress now. They're so busy fighting there private little battles as to whether a Democrat is smarter than a Republican, that they can't figure out how to end the endless battle we're fighting in the mid-east. Let those blood-thirsty Arabs fight each other, and bring our men and women home.

Is war with Pakistan a real possibility? YEP IT SURE IS. Get the Hell Out Of There.
    • Michael G  •  7 mths ago
Two wars and a recession tapped a lot of our resources to fight another war. If we fight this one, it'd be for the benefit of the Afghans.

I think me, as well as most Americans, want to see our bucks spent for the benefit of the US, since things are bad enough here as is.
    • AXL7n7  •  7 mths ago
Why are we kidding our selves Pakistan is the enemy. They laugh as we send them money but side with Taliban and Chinese leaders not American ones. We our allies with India the long time rival of Pakistan. Pull our troops out now and secure our borders. Leave that god forsaken side of the world to live in the hell it created for it self while we focus on bringing our country back to prosperity.
