U.S. and Iran on Collision Course

This week, America and Iran appear to be on a collision course over Iran's nuclear program, and there is fear that this war of words could lead to a real war.

Iran blames the United States and Israel for last weeks murder of an Iranian nuclear scientist, the fifth assassination of of an Iranian nuclear scientist is the last five years.

And while Secretary of State Clinton and Secretary of Defense Panetta vehemently deny any U.S. involvement, Iran swore revenge at the scientists funeral.

On this episode of Around the World, Christiane Amanpour welcomes former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Jamie Rubin, who is also Ms. Amanpour's husband, to discuss where the tension and distrust comes from and whether anything can be done to fix it.

Mr. Rubin believes the basis of the conflict is the combination of Iran's deep rooted distrust of the U.S., and stiff western sanctions over Iran's nuclear program.

However, Mr. Rubin believes that while it would be difficult, "Iran is right at the heart of multiple American interests and cooperation with Iran could serve our goals".

Iran is a 2 bit nation run by fanatics and if they had no oil we would have long ago reduced them to stone age...which would suit their mullahs mentality.

These fanatics cannot be trusted with nukes and if they get them they will one way or other try to us on USA.

If Carter had not been a wimp, we would have in 1979 cleaned their house the fact is ever since 1979 when Iran violated our embassy in an ACT OF WAR, Iran has been at war with USA even if not official.

Look at your gas prices, Iran saber rattles every so often to laugh when oil priced spike up in response in an economic game of war.

Their next rattle should simply have tehran nuked and the mullahs frying in a place other then paradise

Obama and Clinton won't be happy until the terrorists or Iran use a dirty bomb in NYC. The sad part is that NYC is one of the most Liberal spots on Earth. The Liberals only hurt themselves.
War is not the answer, it never was.

Gary's right, it just shifts from one country to another. What is the motive behind all wars? Profit.

Eisenhower warned this country of the empire it had become. Such an irony since our Forefathers sacrificed so much to free us from the empire of England. How I wish some magic could be done to bring back George Washington and the Boys. They would not stand for what has happened to the country they created.

"Iran vows revenge" I bet 99.9% of these people just want to live in peace.

Same thing as here, just a bunch of overgrown student body government nerds with no sense of accountability playing egotistical games at the expense of their nation.

I'm sick and tired of our government trying to make our citizens fearful. A fearful public allows the corrupt to enact laws that control the people. After reading up some independent history, I am convinced that the government tries to create a common enemy to get it's angry citizens minds focused on a central theme to distract them away from the problems at home. History repeats itself and the government wants to whisper sweet nothings into our ears to distract us. Our government has lied to us about the slaughter of Indians and Mexicans that allowed the American empire to expand. We were also told that Abraham Lincoln started the civil war because he wanted to free the slaves, when in reality he only freed the slaves so he could gain military power for the Union army. By freeing slaves it allowed them to join the Union Army causing an eventual defeat of the south. If you read the 1861 inaugerational speech of Lincoln he even stated that he had no desire to free the slaves. Stop this nonsense, I for one am tired of it.

Why do our elected leaders need to take us down this path? According to Jefferson and Lincoln power is delivered from the people to the government rather than the other way around. Our country needs fixing and with wars there is no money to fix America.

This is laced with propaganda, and no facts. Yellow journalism at its worst. There are people who can and will benefit from combat in Iran (para-military manufacturing, lobbyists, and oil vendors and anyone who touches the oil industry). Look there for the war-hawks. The rest of us want nothing to do with war.

The president of Iran believes he has been chosen by God to usher in the return of the 12th Imam or holy man. In order for this so-called holy man to return the world must be in total chaos. How do you deal with a disillusioned mentally ill individual like this. Remember Hitler spelled out his evil scheme in his book “Mien Kampf” and the leaders of the world disregarded him.
