  • Teacher Donates Kidney To Stranger After Seeing Facebook Plea

Any parent of grade-school-age kids knows that it takes a saint to be a teacher. Now a teacher from Kentucky is proving that yet again by volunteering to donate one of her kidneys to a complete stranger.

Twelve months ago, John Desmond, a father of two, came down with bacterial meningitis, which shut down his kidneys and left him in need of a donor. His siblings weren't a match, and his wife, Tina, desperately pleaded on Facebook for a donor to come forward. Amazingly, somebody did: Buffy Sexton, a seventh-grade science teacher and a complete stranger to Desmond.

Sexton saw the post on Facebook when a friend shared it. After months of testing, she learned she was a perfect match. She'll need to be out of the classroom for about a month to recover, but surgeons have agreed to tape the procedure so she'll be able to use it as a lesson when she returns.

  • Photo of Rescued Pit Bull Warms the Hearts of the Web

Lots of animal stories in the news this week, not all of them the warm and fuzzy kind. The discovery of a suspected dog-fighting ring in Plant City, Fla., on Monday elicited angry reactions from locals and the Internet community. But along with sadness comes a touching photo from Reddit user F.L. Medic, who uploaded a shot of Pam Perry from Hillsborough County Animal Services cradling one of the pit bulls in her arms.

Sometimes dogs bred for fighting are unable to adapt to living in a normal, loving situation, but if this photo is any indication, hopefully it will be an easy transition.

The look of contentment on the dog’s face made a huge impression. The photo was upvoted thousands of times, which brought it to Reddit’s front page. One user wrote, “I don’t know who this lady is, but I love her.” Another user pointed out the similarity to a different but equally touching photo, which also went viral, featuring John Unger holding his arthritic 19-year-old dog in the waters of Lake

  • Residents of Mooloolaba, a beachside Australian town, woke to an unexpected sight on Monday morning -- the beach and streets covered in up to 10 feet of foam.

The frothy white substance is a freaky side effect of Tropical Storm Oswald, which caused damage throughout Queensland. Turbulent waves forced pockets of air into the ocean water, producing the foam that blanketed the area.

Tourists and residents were enjoying the fluff, playing in it and taking lots of pictures. But they had to tread carefully. In a video posted to YouTube, police and onlookers were stunned to see a car emerge out of the foam like a sea monster rising from the deep.

  • It's not often that you get a firsthand view of what a tiger's prey sees moments -- or seconds -- before being eaten. In case you were wondering what it's like to be attacked by a big cat, here is the footage, thanks to keepers at the Longleat Safari Park in England. They set out to build snowmen for young Siberian tigers to play with in their enclosure. The keepers had the brilliant idea to insert a GoPro camera in the shoulder of a 6-foot-tall snowman to get a closer look at the beasts while they played. The staffers hit the record button, and then jumped into a Jeep for safety. Good thing, because the curious cats went in for the attack.

Soundari, a 7-year-old tiger, even had the camera in its mouth. Not only did zookeepers get to witness the scary sight of a tiger attack, but, a spokesperson for the safari park said, it "gave us the opportunity to do a quick health check on Soundari's mouth, gums, and teeth."
