You may recognize that familiar jingle, “two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun,” as the iconic ditty used to describe McDonald’s Big Mac. You may also recognize Burger King’s new “Big King” burger as it looks a lot like a Big Mac with two beef patties, lettuce, onions, cheese and special sauce.
Despite the familiar ingredients all the way down to the third bun, Burger King tells ABC News it doesn’t taste like the Big Mac because of the way the burger is prepared — it’s fire-grilled. The Big King is also 40 calories less than its rival.
Brooklyn resident Ty Bills, who eats from both burger chains, sought out the “Big King” on the first day it launched. After the first few bites he smiled and nodded.
“It's very juicy,” he said. “The sauce is different. I don't know what's in the sauce, but the sauce is good,” he added between bites.
The addition of a Big Mac look-a-like is not the first copy-cat move Burger King has made when it comes to its menu. In the last year, Burger King has added several of Mickey Dee’s staples, including chicken snack wraps, specialty coffee drinks and a rib sandwich to rival the McRib. Scott Hume, a blogger for burgerbusiness.com said sales in the $200 billion fast-food industry are flattening.
“The restaurant industry has a long proud history of borrowing ideas from each other,” he said. “It’s a tight economic market so you don’t want to gamble on something that consumers might not like, “Hume added.
