Sandra Bullock is a spirited reminder that life hurls you forward, even from the back of the line. Two other actors said no to her role in Gravity before Bullock, 49, took the chance. Receiving an award this week, she said she’s grateful to Hollywood for “not [sending] me out to pasture. I don’t want to go to the pasture. It’s cold, I’m allergic to grass and the cows are mean.”
And as you look back across the decades on screen, Bullock always seems to be living a life so close to ours. Joy… bruises… and bouncing back. She was 30 years old in Speed, her breakout movie 19 years ago.
Her biography is full of surprises. She’s fluent in German, and her German mother was an opera singer who died young of cancer. Bullock paid tribute to her in her Oscar acceptance speech, thanking her for not letting her “ride in cars with boys until I was 18. Her mother taught her to sing and dance and to get back up when life hands you a personal blow.
No one even knew when Bullock adopted a baby boy named Louis during the making of The Blind Side. After her painful divorce from Jesse James, she took what life handed her and turned it into love.
Looking back, Bullock says she tells herself “We’re all where we’re supposed to be. You can’t go backward. I’m grateful that I’m here, exactly where I want to be now.”
