For as long as we can remember, the spelling bee has been the focus of school academic competitions. Well move over spelling bee, there’s another competition in town. It’s called MathCounts and the national championships are now taking place in Walt Disney World in Florida.
The participants of this competition among “mathletes” range from 13 to 14 years old, each representing a state from across the country. Just like athletes, these kids practice six to eight hours a day.
But what’s in it for them aside becoming crem de la crem mathematicians? Well, the victor will win every kid’s dream. A private tour of Walt Disney World by Mickey Mouse and they will also be the Grand Marshall at the Disney’s Main Street Parade in the Magic Kingdom.
