Tips To Save You Money At The ER

Beyond The Headline

We've all seen those outrageous bills, sometimes tens of thousands to diagnosis a headache. On “World News” we help one California family save thousands on its bill. Here's the three things you need to know.

Tip No. 1: Before you’re faced with a medical emergency, have a bag handy containing your medical records, a list of allergies and the current medications you take, so you’re not paying for what you don’t need.

Tip No. 2: While you’re there, document everything. every treatment you receive, any medications given and don’t leave without an itemized bill, which you can compare to your log and check for errors.

That’s how we discovered the ER billed our family twice for a test only performed once.

And, finally, Tip No.3: Even after you resolve errors, there’s still room to negotiate your bill. Our expert Michelle Katz tells you what to say.

“ You say, listen, I would like to go over my bill with someone. We explained financially she can’t afford this right now. Is there a way we can knock this down?”

What was nearly an $8,000 bill is now less than $1,200.

And if you get nowhere, don't be afraid to file a claim with your insurance company. many times they'll reconsider because you took the time to ask a question.
