Baby dolphin dies shortly after birth at Brookfield Zoo

BROOKFIELD, Ill. (CBS) A newborn dolphin died within moments of his birth at Brookfield Zoo early Sunday morning.Tapeka (CBS Chicago/Brookfield Zoo)

"Our experienced marine mammal staff is just devastated as they share a close bond with the animals in their care. Our primary concern now is the well-being of Tapeko, who is being closely monitored," said Bill Zeigler, senior vice president of animal collection and care for the Chicago Zoological Society, which runs the zoo. "I am very proud of the staff and share in their grief at this terrible loss."

Tapeko, the zoo's 29-year-old bottlenose dolphin, gave birth to a male calf shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday, following three hours of labor, according to a statement from the Chicago Zoological Society, which runs the zoo.

    Moments later, the calf died.

Tapeko began showing signs that she was close to going into labor two days ago, so zoo staff began 24-hour observations.

Around 4 a.m. Sunday, she went into full labor and, immediately after the birth, the calf showed little movement and signs of weakness.

"Normally a newborn calf would need very little assistance from its mother to swim to the surface to take its first breath," said Dr. Mike Adkesson, associate veterinarian for the zoo. "However, Tapeko had to push her calf to the surface and he was unsuccessful in taking a breath."

Staff tried to help, but the calf showed no sign of life.

Tapeko has raised three other calves.

Dolphin presentations at the zoo were canceled for Sunday and the underwater viewing gallery was closed.

Most animals feel a strong connection to their babies, just as humans do. I am sorry for any loss of life and the pain a mother feels when losing her baby, this included. Dairy cows are separated from their calfs ususally right after birth as humans pump the mamas milk for their own consumption and the mom is not allowed to nurse her calf. I once read about a dairy cow who escaped her farm, and they eventually found her miles away, nursing her biological calf. The bond between mother and baby is undeniably strong.

animals aren't in favor of abortion either
      • ChicagoCub 6 mths ago
That really depends on the animal. Typically reproductive behaviors are classified as r-selective and K-selective. Animals like dogs, cats, and turtles are r-selective with one of the characteristics being large litters of offspring with short life spans that are pushed out on their own very early on in hopes that one or a few will survive. Most primates, dolphins, and humans are K-selective, having very few offsprings and investing large amounts of time and resources into nurturing to ensure survival of each one.

Sure, animals aren't in favor of abortion - some species just eat and kill their young if they are disturbed for any number of reasons.

Very sad, Dolphins are beautiful forms of life

When is it not sad for an animal to die?
    • Brandy T  •  6 mths ago
I think it's funny that some people just can't show a little human compassion. The dolphin passing is very sad. My thoughts go out to the workers and caregivers. We don't know why the dolphin died whether it is because it is in captivity or not. It is possible that something was just terribly wrong with the calf. I do agree that it is sad that they are confined but...aren't we all?
      • nonameblonde 6 mths ago
Some of us are confined more so than others by our own negative hateful closed-mindedness. Very well said Brandy!

I don't feel or want to be negative or hateful.. I don't hate. Hate is bad.
Involuntary confinement is not the same as voluntary. Face facts the animals are bought and paid for for your enjoyment at a zoo. You imprison them and dilude yourself to think it's right. They have no choice in the matter....you do. Set them free. That is the compassionate and humane thing to do. All the studies have been done and they can be further studied in the wild. What is wrong with that side of it?

Tabb you have to remember there are always going to have people like Brandy around (the non-practical and hypocritical), as for Nona... her name says it all....

Ignorance reigns supreme at zoos. Those idiots will continue to hold animals captive for monetary gain. Shame on them. Dolphins do die in the wild, but their quality of life is enhanced because they are in their natural habitat. Dolphins do not belong in glass tanks, but those who hold them captive do.

I had the incredible honor of being a 'Trainer for a day' when Brookfield did them years ago. If I remember correctly, Tapeka was the dolphin I had pictures taken with and most of the dolphins there are related through multiple generations. May Tapeka's calf rest in peace and may she find strengh in her 'family' there with her.

As a member of Brookfield zoo, I feel very sad over the loss of not only the dolphin but other young animals that have passed; especially the baby tiger we lost in 2007. Anyone who feels that these animals belong in the wild (especially dolphins) should watch the documentary "The Cove." Zoos may be the last haven for many animals that now face extinction.

I was just at the brookfield zoo last saturday and while I was there I went to see the dolphins and shortly after I saw one of the dolphins sinking to the bottom and before I knew it it was laying down on the floor. I would have tooken a picture or a video but my phone doesnt take much pictures so I didnt have enough time to move some pictures to the sd card. I told my mom to take a picture but she didnt and her excuse was "You didnt tell me to!" But I did and I was so mad. Anyways maybe that was the same dolphin.
