Buckingham Fountain to be closed for Lollapalooza

Much of Grant Park, including Buckingham Fountain, will be closed to the public until next week as Lollapalooza takes over.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's John Cody reports, the three-day music festival now covers 116 acres of Grant Park up to Buckingham Fountain.

Chicago Park District spokeswoman Jessica Maxey-Faulkner says there is a balancing act between visitors to the fountain and visitors to the festival.

"In the last six years, it's brought in more than 8.2 million to Chicago parks citywide, and just last year, it brought in an estimated $85 million in tourism dollars," Maxey-Faulkner said.

She says some people tried to use fountain tours as cover to sneak into Lollapalooza last year, so now the district will only guide fountain tours before festival hours — from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday through Sunday in Grant Park.

Several other public areas will also closed during Lollapalooza, including a dog park, a skate park and tennis courts at 9th Street and Columbus Drive, according to the Sun-Times Media Wire.

Lollapalooza is on from Friday through Sunday. Tickets for this year are sold out.

I might agree with you if I could get a great paying job and live like a human being. I have been unemployed here in Chicago since December of 2009, and I have been putting out resumes consistently, to no avail. If I did not live in an apartment owned by my family I would be homeless, so NO, not everything here in Chicago rocks.

        THE JOB MARKET SUCKS.

The Trib just reported this event pays no taxes because the middleman registered as a non-profit. The middleman was set-up by a Daley. Surprise, surprise.
      • SICK OF LIARS 9 mths ago
The middleman is Rahm Emmanual's brother.
      • yahoo user 9 mths ago
While Rahm's brother has a role in one of the organizations, it was Daley's nephew that set up the tax exemption. Also not being reported is the fact that the event has to donate money for the betterment of the Chicago parks each year AND there is an added benefit of sold-out hotels and packed restaurants.

I will just sit, watch and enjoy the music from my balcony that has a bird's eye view of the event; chill out over great beer, wine, food with my faithful canine who simply loves music as much as I do. Human company optional.

Negative comment galore as always. In these times of nothing but bad news and sadness, what is wrong with getting together with other peaceful music fans and enjoying a few days of summer? Since when is that a BAD thing? The restaurants and hotels need the revenue so surely that isn't a BAD thing either? Nothing is better than enjoying music with thousands of others and forgetting about all the woes of the world.

      "Iconic Chicago Site Closes"
Once again yahoo news reports something that is misleading AS USUAL. If you thought newspapers were bad it's going to be just a travesty when all the newspapers are out of business and we will have to rely on schlock news with bold and inaccurate headlines like yahoo and CNN.

I went a few times. It's amazing how you can get 200,000 white kids into such a tight area, a lot of them smoking pot openly, and the Chicago police treat it as if they are on a vacation. There are no fights, no disruptions, no shootings, no stabbings, no hate, just fun and music. And you can smoke pot openly, did I mention that?
P.S. I know I wasn't being PC, but what it's the truth nonetheless.

I live in Chicago...and it was a BEAUTIFUL day today!!!!! It wasn't too hot, breezy and everyone was having fun around the lakefront and we could here the music from the festival..I sat around on a boat and then went to Greek Town and ate some authentic Greek gyros (Halsted)....Chicago can be great when you know where to go!!!

Get over it you crybabys! I live in a little town called Chillicothe IL and we get the Summer Camp Festival here.15,000 plus people come to our little town of 12,000. I, personally, love seeing all the hippies come to town and spend their cash at our local stores. To H*** with the taxes part to the city. They and all cities alike just abuse our tax dollars anyway. On another note, I must agree with some other post's I read, the one talking about how how ALL ( 99% majority) them white folks can get together WITHOUT any violence! The majority of arrests are made before entry to the park by the local cops to keep as many drugs out as possible, and, to send a message...we are watching you! On a side note: I've never been to either festival, I dont like the music line up at my age. Now if was CLASSIC ROCK bands, that would be a different story!

I just dont understand...it seems like everyone on this site makes everything pertain to a "race" or "politic" issue..wake up people we are suppose "unite" together ...not far apart.

Chicago is a great city because we chased out the fascist Republicans.

      And stay out.

      can you say chi cityyyy
    • Steven  •  9 mths ago
I was downtown today and traffic was absolutely terrible. Michigan Ave was complete gridlock and sidewalks were jammed. But i cant complain, all those people generate revenue for the city that we so desperately need.

Which is more retarded; the name of this thing, the music, of the park district girl-with two last names?
    • Mr. Twister  •  9 mths ago
To my compliment, I got reply from – what his name? Yes, Criss Strokes, thank you Criss Strokes for teaching to English. It funny, I learn English on streets in Miami, and Chicago, and you learn English at school? Right? Did you learn any other language beside English, if you speak or you think you speak, because do and think you do, this is big gap, between, correct and proper English, and you sure you writing everything correct? And one more, before you decide to reply to any one STROKE first. :-) Funny, yes Chris or Criss? Thank you for your time.
