Baby thinks print magazine is a broken iPad

The video, posted on YouTube last week, is quickly becoming a favorite among members of the news media. The minute-and-a-half clip shows a 1-year-old child attempting to manipulate a print magazine like an iPad. Watch it now before the video, the baby and its director make their inevitable round on the morning show circuit.

seriously? Does anyone really think this kid thinks the magazine is an IPAD? That is ridiculous. She is touching the magazine just like babies touch everything. She is discovering what an item will do.....not thinking it is a computer. Kids are just as interested with trying to grab things out of photos, as they are pointing to icons......she is not confused and doesnt need special ed. She is a baby.
      • Ashley 6 mths ago
Exactly. It's proof positive that some people really shouldn't have kids. It's not a confusion about the magazine over iPad, it's learning with tactile feedback. There are toddler books that are geared towards touch with that understanding.

Okay people, you need to chill out a little. This baby is one year old. Her ability to read or her future appreciation of books is not at risk because she can use an ipad. At this stage of development babies learn to hold books, maybe to turn the page. Clearly she is able to do those things. She does not have bad parents and is obviously a bright and inquisitive child.

this is so stupid. at 1 we all pointed and rubbed our hands on things, that didn't mean we thought they were ipads.
    • Kristi  •  Rock Springs, United States  •  6 mths ago
Oh my gosh people! It takes a baby a few minutes to figure things out, their brains absorb information very quickly. She could have played with that ipad for five minutes and then started pushing at things to move them with her finger the same way. It doesn't mean her parents sit her in a corner and give her an ipad to play with all day any more than it means they don't read to her! Get a grip!

she is not rejecting a book...this is the future...and it will be greater, amziliant and so open! we cannot stick to how things were, we got to learn from it and move... everything becomes a footnote through history/herstory...we can no longer remain stagnant, boring and dull!

This is too cute:) We have three kids and read "age appropriate" books to all of them, but our little boy (who is 4) LOVES his daddy's iPad and watching PBS kids videos on it. It didn't take him but a couple of minutes to learn to use it correctly. Kids are just wired differently these days. It doesn't mean that it's wrong, it's just the way things are. As a kindergarten teacher, I can definitely say that children need to know how to use computers and other technology at a young age. It is what is being pushed in schools and the workforce in general. I think it's ignorant to act like technology is going to go away, so there is no need to let kids learn to use it while they are young. Does it's use need to be limited to a smaller amount of time for small children? Definitely. Do you need to keep it away from them totally? No! Our kids in this country need all the edge they can get. I definitely have no problem allowing my children to be exposed (to a limited amount) of technology, so they will know and understand how to use these things when the time comes. Because want it or not, the time will come when they will HAVE to use these things in order to be a part of school and/or work.

To the people that are getting upset over this video..you people are nut jobs because this is cute lol you can't comment on someone's parenting through an almost minute and a half video..get over yourselves.
      • smily 6 mths ago
I agree...kids play with all kinds of thing...the best part of a big special xmas gift is the box...does it make issues with the child growing up..no...worst part of the video is the comentary that is only a parents prospective...you don't see how many books are read to the child...or even what they are on...later the expensive ipad is no longer a toy...and books will be the narative again...give it up people...your reading too much into the video. Just like your normal lives

She's projecting where computing will be in 10 years, or less. This video will be perfect to advertise such a product when it comes out. Go baby Go!

I did that the other day with a magazine to turn the page. I felt like an idiot...

LOL it is funny to see people complaining that the girl isn't being properly taught how to read...I wonder how many books (other than corny romance novels) these complainers read themselves every year...AFAIK the average American reads less than one book a year...so it's pathetic anyway.
    • Renee  •  7 mths ago
she learned what she was most exposed to. why didn't someone try reading her a book?
      • spike8008 7 mths ago
Because in 18 years when she is looking for a job, there won't be many books around. And what job will she find that only uses books and not computers?
      • jja_American 7 mths ago
SHE is a 1 year old baby,, touches,,readhis age.ing to? not the best at t
      • Jason 7 mths ago
Spike - So children should only be exposed to job-related things? What a dull life any children you may have must lead.
    • JB  •  7 mths ago
cute baby, I especially like how she "tests" out her finger on her leg to make sure its working right. Actually shows intelligence in root cause isolation. Well if its not my finger, it must be the magazin thats broken. cute
      • Amber 6 mths ago
i noticed that too yeah she had to check her finger on her leg
    • Mac  •  7 mths ago
Babies have very limited experience. This article & video are not worth more than 2 seconds of thought.
      • Kimberly 7 mths ago
Clearly, you think your opinion is worth more--since it took you longer than 2 seconds to write. (I'm figuring...). Doesn't hurt to be nice and/or positive. It's actually fairly painless.
    • Tyler  •  7 mths ago
All babies do that with magazines and pictures in general. This is just another example of how the elitist media is obsessed with Apple and the crap that they sell.
    • forcryinoutloud  •  7 mths ago
After taking care of 15 different children in my lifetime, all who grew up without this type of technology around, I can say this child is doing what ALL children do. This has nothing to do with the ipad, but is rather this child simply learning through touch.
    • Me  •  7 mths ago
stop the world. I want to get off.
    • Randall S  •  7 mths ago
Cute But I really doubt that she thinks that the magazines are Ipads that don't work. If you give a magazine to another child around the same age that has never seen an ipad or gotten to touch one. Notice that they will do the very same thing this child is doing in the video. The media thinking she doesn't know the difference is showing how stupid the news media has become.
    • kap  •  7 mths ago
Monkey ( in this case a child)see Monkey do. Children only copy what their older people do.
    • Mark  •  7 mths ago
I like babies and I like iPads. Magazines are OK, too. Yet, I hated this video. ..... ???? ......
    • Jeff H  •  7 mths ago
You do realize people, she will know more about computers at 5 yrs old then you do now. What difference does it make whether she learns to read from a book or an Ipad... as long as she learns. Dont forget, there was a time before students had books. Can you imagine parents saying "Its a shame those kids wont learn to read a stone that has been chiseled". All you people against learning from an Ipad are just afraid of the future, afraid of your children being smarter than you and probably afraid of the dark too.
