He’s back! Stephen Colbert addresses rumors about his absence

    Colbert (AP/Chris Pizzello)

Stephen Colbert returned to "The Colbert Report" on Monday, a week after production on the show was suspended, giving the fake talk show host time to tend to his ailing 91-year-old mother.

Colbert abandoned his usual faux-fear-mongering schtick at the top of the show to talk about his absence.

"Before we start the broadcast tonight I just want to address my recent absence from the national conversation, as the hub around which the republic turns," Colbert said. "I can understand why the machinery of this great nation ground to a halt last week when you were denied this. I'm sure you felt the same as I do when I'm in a room with no mirrors."

Colbert also cataloged the "wild rumors" about why he was gone.

"Some people said my show was canceled by the Federal Communications Commission at the request of the Federal Election Commission because I was about to announce my presidential candidacy," he said. "Others said I was canceled because I offended the Catholic church when I compared the pope's hat to a giant yet stylish prophylactic. Still others said I was in rehab--always an attractive option, if they have that for Diet Coke." Joan Rivers, Colbert noted, even accused him of taking time off to have plastic surgery.

The host never mentioned his mother directly, but alluded to what he called a "confidential to a special lady."

"Evidently having 11 children makes you tough as nails," he said, referring to his mother and his many brothers and sisters.

Comedy Central abruptly canceled last Wednesday's taping, alerting audience members with tickets to the late afternoon production in an email. "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the show will air repeat episodes on Wednesday, February 15 and Thursday, February 16," a spokesman for the network said at the time.

It was later reported that Colbert had a family emergency.

I can't stand Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, but if their Mother or someone close to them was seriously ill I would put that aside and wish them and their families the best. Do we always have to go to our "Us vs. Them" attitudes?
      • You Humans Blew it... 3 mths ago
sadly most people do....they will complain about their life, for their whole life....And never do anything about it....Don't feel for them..they made their beds...left or right...let them rot in it.....The story is a guy and his mom....everyone else is lost
      • Metal Fatigue 3 mths ago
Rush and Sean are the source of "Us vs. Them". The audience is just the recipient.
      • You Humans Blew it... 3 mths ago
See that "Metal", you are too stupid to see that your post confirmed that you are one of the US vs, THEM... Too funny..YOUR words, not mine....Showed your hand. and the beauty is , you don't see it.....

Whether you agree with his politics or not, its nice to see a celebrity put his family before his fame - and not because his family member is in rehab or jail.

The fact that 12 people actually voted "thumbs down" on this very universally positive comment just shows how rotten some people are.

"Whether you agree with his politics or not ... ."

Gosh, I thought he didn't have any politics. Isn't that the point?

A TV personality who missed some shows to be with his ailing mother? Maybe there is hope for America after all. My best to Mr. Colbert and his family.

Yawn... you believed that excuse? Hollywood power over common sense.
      • imautobot 3 mths ago
Keith Olbermann took time off while his father was dying.
      • David 3 mths ago
Tim, how ignorant can one be? His mother is like 90 years old. You don't think she gets sick? Lol, I like how you talk about common sense, yet have none. Sit down little man, your intellectual capacity is sadly lacking. But you can't really expect an intelligent, rational being to hail from Oregon, now can you?
    • Doug  •  3 mths ago
I have to seriously respect this guy for keeping his priorities straight. Too bad his presidential run is only a joke, he's better than any of the other joke candidates on either side of the aisle.

Doug, thanks for telling everyone you are a F***ing retard

Sam, thanks for telling everyone you are a b**ch. Doug, I don't think he wouldn't disgrace himself like that.

I think it would be breath of fresh air and yes I would vote for Stephen Colbert....

I think the world would be a better place with someone of his intellect.....

As Dolly Parton said, haven't we got enough boobs for politicians!!!!!

Sam you must be a Reichtie to say something like that......

To Mr. Colbert, welcome back, we were worried, hope Mom is doing ok ;-)

SC was decent enough, to take a week off, to tend to his sick 91 year old mother. If you don't like his show, don't watch it.

me either....I have better things to do
    • Lisa  •  3 mths ago
LOOK at the Repugs just seething!! His mother is frickin' 91 years old...and you knuckleheads manage to find some kind of verbal vomit to throw around on the boards.
Even with a story like this. It is pretty sad that you Repugs get your panties in a big old bunch becasue of this guy...he must really hit the nail on the head huh? Or else why so much drama over a comedian?
Does he hurt your little feelings Repugs? Good............do you see too much of yourselves in his fake performance as a Repug? I bet you do.
    • Apathetic  •  3 mths ago
"Evidently having 11 children makes you tough as nails..." - You better believe it! And she managed to not kill any of them - she deserves Sainthood for that.

For all those that are saying bad things in regards to Stephen Colberts' mother, what the heck did she do to you? What would your mother think about you wishing her ill will. It is such a sad commentary about America, when people make attacks on people who have purposefully been kept out of the public eye, for just such reasons. As far as Stephen Colbert goes, he is a comedian(whether or not you think he is funny), and an entertainer; which I must say, he is good at. Personally, I wish his mother, whose name I don't even know, the best. In a family with 11 children, I would think that there would be other siblings to stand by his mothers' side, but for once we see a devoted son willing to put his career on hold, even if just for a few days; it is an admirable quality!

Do the people posting negative comments on here really think that they are clever? Gay boyfriends, sex change operations, doing coke off of Whitney Houston, an infected Prince Albert, and hoping his mother dies(really?!?); his audience will only grow as people want to distance themselves from ignorant hateful people such as yourselves.

Actually, with that said in hindsight, keep posting these comments. Anyone on the fence between conservative and liberal who reads your comments will be running for the liberal side in no time.
    • Citizen  •  3 mths ago
I wish Colbert and his mother all the best. Not only is he outrageously funny, but he is also absolutely brilliant (and this is coming from someone who has received, and also awards, advanced degrees). To name one example, nobody in the "serious" press has illustrated how ridiculous the Citizens United decision was as Colbert and Stewart have.
    • c  •  Duluth, Georgia  •  3 mths ago
lol Welcome back Colbert! Best blessings to your family ,and thank you for all the smiles and attn you've brought to current affairs. It's nice to laugh at ourselves and to understand how silly some issues are, and just how important others should be. Regardless of belief I salute you on the encouragement you've given the youth to have an interest in politics whether in agreement or disagreement by providing an awesome presentation of entertainment that will always be adored.
    • Dan R  •  Mesquite, Texas  •  3 mths ago
He is a comedian, dude. From Will Rogers to Mark Twain to Richard Pryor to Mort Sahl to Lenny Bruce to Eddie Foy comedians treat "important" subjects with one liners and sarcasm. For heavens sake lighten up. I recall the indignant outrage when Joan Rivers did a comedy bit called "Having a baby is a scream"......Phylis Diller talked about dysfunctional families, Bob Hope made fun of terrible scary tragic war in front of the troops. It you can't laugh you cry all the darn time.
    • Cashman7323  •  3 mths ago
he and stewart are often very funny. Sadly, they are closer to the truth than anything the main stream media puts out.

"Some people said my show was canceled by the Federal Communications Commission at the request of the Federal Election Commission because I was about to announce my presidential candidacy," he said. "Others said I was canceled because I offended the Catholic church when I compared the pope#$%$ to a giant yet stylish prophylactic. Still others said I was in rehab--always an attractive option, if they have that for Diet Coke."Stephen is so funny. I don't know how he keeps it up. People who are offended by him just make it even funnier. They don't get it. He goes where no one else has gone with regard to politics and comedians. He is creating a whole new standard for comedians and politics and it is great. The world would be a horrible place without these guys that can mock the instititutions.

It's funny how apperently so many people on yahoo comments don't watch and don't like him, but they know so much about him and are commenting on an article about him...yyyeaahhh. Interesting how that works.

All the negative comments here. For comedy to work there has to be truth behind it, and Stephen Colbert does it so well!!!

I don't watch his show, but did see the news reports of the cancellation. I think it's lovely that he cares for his mother. He's a good son and I'm glad Mrs. Colbert is better.
