Flickr picks the 18 best news photos of 2011

The Situation Room, May 2, 2011. (White House/Flickr)

We all may have a little year-end list fatigue, but Flickr has curated a pretty cool one: a collection of the best news photos of the year as selected by Yahoo editors.

Natural disasters (the tsunami in Japan, the tornado in Joplin, and Hurricane Irene in the Northeast) figure prominently, as do the protests that began in the Middle East and have spread to Wall Street. (That doesn't include the riot in Vancouver following the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, which is also featured on Flickr's list.)

Our personal favorite remains the May 2 photo, released by the White House, showing President Barack Obama and his national security team as they huddled in the Situation Room to watch a video live feed of the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden.

So glad Yahoo News is here to tell us that the Flickr (owned by Yahoo) end-of-the-year list, as chosen by Yahoo editors, is "pretty cool" compared to the rest of the end-of-the-year lists.

Unimpressive collection of photos. I mean really, that's the one you picked for Japan?

To the #$%$ who came up with the headline for this article - Flickr is a website. It can't pick photos. Yahoo editors selected photos. Even the article says so.I tell you, qualifications to write an article these days seem to be only that you are stupider than a rock. An order of magnitude stupider than a rock.

Gads, some of these photos are just creep shots. #$%$ with the guy copping the feel of the chick? Surely there were better photos to choose from..

Ridiculous! Like killing Bin Laden made an ounce of difference to peoples lives here. What about the 10 other Bin Ladens in that picture and several hundreds (senators, lobbyist, CEOs, mediat) out in DC......seeping the very life of ordinary americans with their policies of fear and repression....
I tell you the best pics of the year. Children living in the dark cause their families cannot afford to pay electricity bills, a man walking alongside a busy highway with a sign 'lost my job, have two kids to feed', a 60 yr old woman dumpster diving looking for empty cans which she can sell and feed her belly......those are realities of everyday life in US every single day.....and the cold weather is upon us.....go look under every bridge, how many homeless are spending their nights each passing day.....
I don't care about Liberals, much less Republicans or Independents alike. I care about people and a culture that was once ours, about care, nurture, living peacefully with other nations........not about greed, hatred, delusion that have become the symbols of our existence in US today......

I think it is a list for amateur non journalistic photographs that people put up on Flickr. Basically like the I-reporters on CNN...just regular folks at the right place at the right time.
