Jim Romenesko resigns from Poynter over attribution flap

Jim Romenesko--who made a name for himself as the go-to source of aggregated media news for more than a decade--abruptly resigned from the Poynter Institute on Thursday, after the director of the journalism center questioned the way he attributed his blog posts.

"Poynter has accepted my resignation," Romenesko wrote on Twitter. "Thanks to all for the incredible support today."

Romenesko had been planning a "semi-retirement" anyway, but Poynter editor Julie Moos' criticism of his work hastened that exit seven weeks early.

Earlier Thursday, Moos wrote that "Romenesko's posts exhibit a pattern of incomplete attribution." She cited typical examples of Romenesko's summaries, noting that while he always credited the source of the news, he failed to use quotation marks around "verbatim language" from the source material.

"One danger of this practice is that the words may appear to belong to Jim when they in fact belong to another," Moos wrote.

Moos' post sparked a backlash among media bloggers and the Romenesko faithful.

"Unless there are far more egregious examples out there--which I strain to imagine, since the practice and intent of Romenesko's blog is self-evident--this is a nothingburger," Time magazine television critic James Poniewozik wrote in a comment on Moos' post.

Another was not so measured: "Seriously, Poynter? THIS is the issue that you get outraged about? THIS is the issue that leads you to plant your flag on morals, ethics and proper journalistic behavior?"

Romenesko had been at the institute for 12 years; Poynter scooped up the then-Pioneer Press reporter and his fledgling but influential site, Mediagossip.com, in 1999.

Romenesko told the New York Times on Thursday that Moos' criticism threw him "for a loop," but declined further comment.

"I'm relieved that many readers and sources understood Jim's intent to credit properly and felt fairly treated by him," Moos wrote after accepting Romenesko's resignation. "This was not the transition Jim and I planned during our talks this summer, and it's not the end I wanted. [...] The abrupt conclusion of Jim's tenure with Poynter should not overshadow his unmatched contributions; he changed Poynter, he changed journalism and he changed newsrooms."

The original plan had been for Romenesko--who is launching his own website--to contribute to Poynter after his departure, though that would seem unlikely now.

"We will change the blog's name in the coming days," Moos wrote, "but Romenesko will remain an important part of Poynter's legacy, one we value."

Bloggers and journalists need to learn that just because "they" find each other important, that doesn't mean the rest of the world does.

        You speak the truth, Jason.

Watching ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX and reading the L.A. Times and many online articles, now days they all copy and source TMZ a gossip website. This morning a Sports Jounalist spewed out comments about Penn State that came from TMZ.

Never knew there was a blogging legend. Whatever.
    • Drew  •  6 mths ago
Bloggers are not journalists, but unfortunately most journalists now days are just bloggers.
      • H M 6 mths ago
Sad, but true. And, in part, a direct result of the last 2 or more decades as journalists and news reporters increasingly don't tell the story, but include their biases and editorializing. News agencies cut back on editors and/or lower the standards that an editor can hold the writing staff to. I also don't know the state of journalism schooling in America, but wonder.
      • RAB 6 mths ago
Frankly one of the reasons bloggers become necessary. Any source of fact checking to make sure personal bias doesn't creep in is a valuable commodity. Too often people treat journalists as infallible. Or at least they like to think so themselves.

        Yep

"Bloggers" are not journalists, and this is an example why.
      • Kym 6 mths ago
But people read and listen to what that are saying and don't realize the difference

        People has to start somewhere.

In fact when you see people here mindlessly comment, they think they must be somebody too.

I bet the writer of this would often caress this webpage and dream of being famous.

    • Jason  •  6 mths ago
Who? Bloggers? Oh you mean the people that just make crap up and spread lies. That pretty much means most media is in the same boat.
    • HunterF  •  6 mths ago
Clearly a ploy to garner news about the website as Romenesko was leaving anyways.

They arent relevant. They post one persons version of a story. That most people
      run off with as fact.

The Poynter Institute? Oh yeah.....I got my online degree in locksmithing from them. Once I save up a little more, I'm going to get them to give me a degree in drafting or AC /refrigeration repair. Then the big bucks will be rolling in.

I don't think I understood a single word of that "article." Do people care about blogs? Has anybody actually heard of this supposed legend, or even the company he worked for? Time magazine makes up words like "nothingburger?"

Is is possible to be so confused that your brain explodes? Because if so, I need to get to a hospital ASAP.
    • Jeremy  •  6 mths ago
who are these people and why are they relevant?
    • Andrew  •  6 mths ago
If he is the one who changed media dose that mean he's the one who's to blame for the media being a bunch of lying one-sided glory hounds who don't care about giving unbiased reports just as long as they get their name out there and possibly earn (BUY) the Nobel prize for literature.
    • Jack S  •  Los Angeles, United States  •  6 mths ago
