Most Americans agree with Herman Cain: The media is ‘downright dishonest’

    Cain (AP)

Herman Cain lashed out at the media on Saturday for being "downright dishonest" in the coverage of past sexual harassment allegations against him--and it appears most Americans agree.

According to a new survey conducted by Poll Position on Sunday, 64 percent of registered voters agree with Cain's assertion, while 19.3 percent disagree. Of the 1,179 respondents in the poll, 17 percent were either unsure or did not have an opinion.

On Saturday, presidential candidate Herman Cain made this statement: "There are too many people in the media who are downright dishonest." Do you agree with that statement?

    Agree: 64.0%
    Disagree: 19.3%
    N/O: 16.7%

National Telephone Poll of 1,179 Registered Voters / 11.06.11 / Margin of Error +/- 3%

An overwhelming number of Republicans agreed with Cain's view (83 percent), while significantly fewer (45 percent) registered Democrats did. Still, Democrats who agreed with Cain largely outnumbered those who did not (29 percent).

Nearly 60 percent of women polled agreed with Cain; 21.3 percent did not.

The results did not vary in terms of race; most white (66 percent), black (56.5 percent) and Hispanic (60.8 percent) respondents in the survey largely agreed with Cain.

That most Americans think the media is dishonest is not a surprise. A September Gallup poll found that 55 percent of Americans "have little or no trust" in mass media outlets--newspapers, TV or radio--to report the news fully, accurately or fairly.

The numbers were virtually unchanged from last year's poll, Gallup said. The last time a majority of Americans trusted the news media was in 2003.

Ultimately, many of the photos and cellphone records of Trayvon Martin released online Thursday by George Zimmerman’s defense attorneys – indicating that the slain teenager smoked marijuana, got into fights at school, and had an interest in, and perhaps access to, guns – may be ruled inadmissible in court. But they are already making the rounds in the court of public opinion, which can influence everything from fundraising efforts to the mind-set of potential jurors in Mr. Zimmerman's murder trial.
