    Steve Jobs: 1955-2011

    (Apple)

Steve Jobs, Apple co-founder and technology industry visionary, has died. He was 56.

    Apple's statement to customers:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

Visitors to Apple's homepage were greeted with a large black-and-white image of Jobs (above) adjacent to the dates of his life span: "1955-2011." And flags are flying at half-staff at Apple's Cupertino, Calif., campus.

Here's a brief statement issued by the company's board of directors:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

Here's the statement from Jobs' family:

Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family.

In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve's illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories.

We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.

And one from President Barack Obama:

Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.

By building one of the planet's most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity.  By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun.  And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last.  Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.

The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve's success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve's wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.

Here's the memo from Tim Cook, Apple CEO and Jobs' successor, to staff:

    Team,

I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

We are planning a celebration of Steve's extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email rememberingsteve@apple.com.

No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve's death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.

Here's a statement from Microsoft co-founder (and former rival) Bill Gates:

I'm truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs' death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work. Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives. The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it's been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.

One from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg:

Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.

    From Google co-founder Sergey Brin:

From the earliest days of Google, whenever Larry and I sought inspiration for vision and leadership, we needed to look no farther than Cupertino. Steve, your passion for excellence is felt by anyone who has ever touched an Apple product (including the macbook I am writing this on right now). And I have witnessed it in person the few times we have met.  On behalf of all of us at Google and more broadly in technology, you will be missed very much. My condolences to family, friends, and colleagues at Apple.

From Larry Page, Google's co-founder and CEO:

I am very, very sad to hear the news about Steve. He was a great man with incredible achievements and amazing brilliance. He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me. He was very kind to reach out to me as I became CEO of Google and spend time offering his advice and knowledge even though he was not at all well. My thoughts and Google's are with his family and the whole Apple family.

Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, where Jobs was a member of the board:

Steve Jobs was a great friend as well as a trusted advisor. His legacy will extend far beyond the products he created or the businesses he built. It will be the millions of people he inspired, the lives he changed, and the culture he defined. Steve was such an "original," with a thoroughly creative, imaginative mind that defined an era. Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started. With his passing the world has lost a rare original, Disney has lost a member of our family, and I have lost a great friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Laurene and his children during this difficult time.

    From AOL co-founder Steve Case:

I feel honored to have known Steve Jobs. He was the most innovative entrepreneur of our generation. His legacy will live on for the ages.

    Twitter CEO Dick Costolo:

Once in a rare while, somebody comes along who doesnt just raise the bar, they create an entirely new standard of measurement.

From Lance Armstrong, who survived testicular cancer, via Twitter:

Devastated [to] hear about the passing of Steve Jobs. Was blessed [to] have the opportunity to spend time with him on several occasions. May he RIP. "A computer is the most remarkable tool that we've ever come up with. It's a bicycle for our minds" - Steve Jobs

    New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg:

Tonight, America lost a genius who will be remembered with Edison and Einstein, and whose ideas will shape the world for generations to come. Again and again over the last four decades, Steve Jobs saw the future and brought it to life long before most people could even see the horizon. And Steve's passionate belief in the power of technology to transform the way we live brought us more than smart phones and iPads: it brought knowledge and power that is reshaping the face of civilization. In New York City's government, everyone from street construction inspectors to NYPD detectives have harnessed Apple's products to do their jobs more efficiently and intuitively. Tonight our City - a city that has always had such respect and admiration for creative genius - joins with people around the planet in remembering a great man and keeping Laurene and the rest of the Jobs family in our thoughts and prayers.

And Yahoo! Finance economics editor Daniel Gross:

In an era frequently characterized by executive greed and massive pay for significant underperformance, Jobs worked for a dollar a year.

Here are roundups of tweets about Jobs from various celebrities, prominent media people and, importantly, users.

A poignant quote from Jobs' 2005 commencement speech at Stanford University (via the New York Observer):

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It is life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

I do not think that most people realize how much suffering and pain Steve went through. Pancreatic cancer and the "Whipple Surgery" that accompanies it, I can attest as I have been through it, is" the most difficult surgery for a surgeon to perform and the most difficult for a patient to recover from" A quote for my pancreatic oncology surgeon from Stanford Hospital, Palo Alto. It took me about 6 months to even get around out of bed. I was in tremendous pain, took pain killers that made me hallucinate, so had to downgrade me to a pain killer that wasn't as effective in killing the pain, but helped a bit. I watch my grandmother die within 3 months of discovering pancreatic cancer and no pain killer was effective for her as she lay dying. Steve, you were so brave and so quiet about the tremendous amount of pain you must have endured and endured it with dignity. I admire you so much! I cannot wait to read your biography and more about you as a person. I think highly of your character, brillance, bravery and dignity in the face of death and pain. I personally am having a hard time with your passing. I am just a regular, average resident of Silicon Valley but I have gratitute in my heart for knowing so little about you but enough to know what you must have went through. May God bless you and your family and your spirit will live forever on.

I'm 61yo and started in the computer field as a COBOL/FORTRAN/PL1 programmer. I championed the IBM PC from the get-go, and actually hated Apple computers' icon-driven interface. At the time, I felt that anyone who needed little pictures to tell them what to do was incredibly stupid. I relished the C:\-prompt because I actually had to use my brain to continue from that point on. I had to KNOW what I wanted to do and HOW to do it from a blank screen. I'm weird that way: I relish mental exercise.

But gradually, Apple insinuated itself into my life. My son was born in 1970, and we went through the Commodores, Ataris, etc. He learned to appreciate the Apple machines in school, then came home to something else! I tried to avoid anything Apple like the plague, using dot-matrix printers well past the advent of the Laserwriter printers, etc., altho I had to use them at work. Professionally, I moved into desktop publishing and website design. I had to use more and more Apple-based products. My son, long-since grown, of course went with a Mac when he bought his own computer. I. only half in jest, called him a traitor!

The advent of the Sony Discman had both of us wanting portable music. I bought my son one, and decided it was just too bulky for all-day, everyday use for myself. Bought an Apple PowerCD player for home use since our collection of music CDs was getting outrageous.Still, I wanted to take MY MUSIC with me, not listen someone else's on the radio. -- Steve Jobs knew that, and along came the iPod Nano -- which has graduated to an 8 GB iPod Touch with 293 of my favorite songs on it so far. I use a PC-laptop, but my music never sounded so sweet as it does on iTunes or on my iPod, so easy to take-with! Thank you, Mr. Jobs, for knowing what I wanted -- before I knew I needed it.

It is a Great Loss to the world to see such man with vision and drive such as Steve Jobs to leave us. Technologically he was one of my inspiration to go forward where no man has gone before.

Even though I am not a tech person, I like to follow the lives of great individuals. I must say Steve Jobs is one of those persons who will be remembered forever. May he rest in peace from his pains and God grant comfort to his grieving family and close friends.

I personally am not an Apple fan. That said, no one on the face of this planet can deny that Steve Jobs was truly a genius of his time. He really did affect significant change in the world around him, and served as an inspiration for many people all over the world. He will be missed.

For better or worse, Steve Jobs changed the course of human history. He dared us to think differently from those who thought we should kowtow to the big companies.

Thanks Yahoo! I had the first comment and only told the truth. Yet you removed my comment. There was no foul language or malice toward anyone. Is this what the 1st amendment means to liberals? Freedom of speach unless we dont like what you said? God Bless America!
