Vieira confirms she will leave ‘Today’

In an emotional segment on NBC's "Today" on Monday, co-host Meredith Vieira announced to her colleagues and the world that she will leave the top-rated morning show in June, confirming reports about her imminent departure that have been floating around for the past month.

"Even as I say this, and I know that it is the right thing, I'm sad because ... this has been my second home," she said, holding back tears. "I really hope to stay in the NBC family, that is my goal. It just won't be sitting at the couch every day."

Vieira, 57, who's been with "Today" since 2006 when Katie Couric left, said she wanted to spend more time with her husband and kids.

Meanwhile, Veteran "Today" show newsreader Ann Curry, who's been with the program since 1997, will move into Vieira's slot, co-host Matt Lauer announced; Natalie Morales, who helms "Today's" 9 a.m. hour, has been bumped up to replace Curry.

"I feel like the high school computer nerd who was just asked to the prom by the quarterback of the football team," said Curry.

The moves at "Today," which is the perennial morning show ratings champ, come as Vieira's predecessor is also plotting the next phase of her career--Couric recently announced that she will leave the "CBS Evening News" in June to pursue a syndicated daytime talk show.

In other morning show updates, ABC's "Good Morning America" announced Monday that Lara Spencer is re-joining the broadcast as "lifestyle anchor."
