Dorothy Howell Rodham in 2008. (AP)Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's mother, Dorothy Howell Rodham, died shortly after midnight Tuesday surrounded by her family, the Clinton family said in a statement. She was 92.
On Monday, Clinton had canceled a planned trip to the United Kingdom and Turkey to care for her ailing mother.
"Dorothy Howell Rodham was born in Chicago on June 4, 1919 and died shortly after midnight on November 1, 2011 in Washington, D.C., surrounded by her family," the Clinton family said in the statement sent to journalists by the State Department Tuesday morning.
"Her story was a quintessentially American one, largely because she wrote it herself," it said. "She overcame abandonment and hardship as a young girl to become the remarkable woman she was—a warm, generous and strong woman; an intellectual; a woman who told a great joke and always got the joke; an extraordinary friend and, most of all, a loving wife, mother and grandmother." Among Rodham's survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Bill Clinton; her sons and daughters-in-law, Hugh Rodham, Maria Rodham, Tony Rodham and Megan Rodham; her grandchildren, Chelsea Clinton and her husband Marc Mezvinsky, Zachary Rodham, Fiona Rodham and Simon Rodham.
The family plans a private service. They have asked that in lieu of flowers, those who wish are encouraged to direct donations in Rodham's honor to George Washington University Hospital, where she had received medical care, or the Heifer Project, a charitable organization Rodham supported.
Clinton mentioned to journalists who traveled with her in recent years that she appreciated getting to live with her mother at her home in Washington, D.C.
