Iran reportedly sentences film actress to 90 lashes

(Bonnie Elliott/Sydney Morning Herald)An Iranian court has sentenced an Iranian actress to one year in jail and 90 lashes related to her role in an Australian-made film portraying social alienation, artistic repression and drug use in Iran, according to an Iranian opposition website.

"In an outcome that could have been lifted from the pages of the movie's script"--"My Tehran for Sale"--the film's lead actress, Marzieh Vafamehr, "was arrested in July and received her sentence at the weekend, according to reports quoting Iranian opposition website kalameh.com," the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

In the 2009 film, Vafamehr portrays a Tehran actress whose theater work is banned by the authorities and is thus driven to Tehran's cultural underground. Ultimately, she contemplates whether to leave Iran for exile abroad.

"Vafamehr often appears with a shaved head and no headscarf in the film, which also explores cultural oppression in Iran and taboos such as drug use," the paper said.

Vafamehr's attorney has reportedly appealed the sentence which was handed down on Saturday. Technically, she was accused of participating in a film whose shooting did not have the required permits. However, both the film's director and the actress's filmmaker husband Nasser Taghvai said the charge is baseless.

"The accusations against Marzieh have no grounds," Granaz Moussavi, the Melbourne-based Iranian-Australian director of the film, said in a statement Tuesday, the AP reported. "All the documentation has been provided to the Iranian court to show that permits were in place for the production of the film."

Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd also expressed concern about the sentence Tuesday.

"The Australian government condemns the use of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and is deeply concerned by reports that Ms. Marzieh Vafamehr has been sentenced to one year in jail and 90 lashes for her role in an Australian-produced film," a spokeswoman for Rudd said in a statement, the AP wrote. "The Australian government urges Iran to protect the rights of all Iranians and foreign citizens."

Iran's Orwellian justice system has provoked past controversies.  Last year, for example, Iranian courts approved a death-by-stoning sentence for Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a woman accused of adultery and murder charges. Ashtiani's sentence was stayed, but only after a global outcry from international human-rights groups.

A moratorium had been declared on stoning in 2002, but the nation's Islamic courts have continued to hand down stoning sentences in accordance with the strict wording of the law.

On Tuesday, Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reportedly took to his website to criticize a flogging punishment handed down to a student who had criticized him.

"When high-profile figures freely insult the government, I disapprove that a youth is flogged for insulting me," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wrote at his presidential website, the Associated Press reported.

Lashing sentences are not unheard of in the region. Last month, the Saudi king reportedly overturned a lashing sentence handed down to a Saudi woman who had been arrested for driving.

Makes me wonder why so many radical muslims seem to be afraid of women.

Look at our own history here in the west. Why just a hundred years ago the women of the west were considered property, they had no rights, it was legal for a man to beat his wife with a stick ( as long as it wasn't any thicker than his thumb )women could hold office but couldn't vote ( until the 1920's ) & we think that we are qualified to critique a millenia old civilization. To Chikote, read the Koran, muslim men aren't any more afraid of women than the Roman Catholic church, who still subjugates women & minorities, suppresses scientific discovery, as well as the Truth.

My question to all you women out there who, rightly, say that the punishment doesn't fit the crime, is this; Would anyone of you care half as much if it was a man who was to receive 90 lashes for the same reason as Ms. Vafamehr?

These are not the actions of radicals. Misogyny is entrenched into the laws, culture etc. There won't be any change until there is an economic reason in the entire region for them to do so. Even non-oil countries have their terrorism sponsored by the wealthy countries. Until we get off foreign oil, they have the luxury of being backward.

I didn't know someone could get 90 lashes, I thought you couldn't receive more than 40. The bible even speaks of it, not to ever give even one more than 40. I thought it was because more than that could actually kill a person? It's just horrible to punish women that way, I saw some video on you tube where this Sudanese woman was getting publicly lashed, it made me sick to my stomach, literally, I just don't think people should be allowed to do stuff like this anymore.

        90 is the new 40

The Iranians don't follow the Bible. They are Islamic.

Dear Iran, what the hell is your problem? I talk a lot; but, this story needs but a "title" to depict your Country's outdated laws...I will not insult any Religion; but #$%$ 90 lashes for acting in a movie? I'm sure you guys censor your internet and what movies are played in your great land; so, if possible, can you keep the alienation of your most precious resource, YOUR WOMEN, to a non-violent, ultra-male-egotistical attitude? Just asking...Call them a bad name or something. If you want to make them feel like nothing; you can do it without physically harming them; I know this because your President is a nice guy, who wouldn't harm a fly...(sarcasm ensuing..)

Good one D33-man! I don't get the need for violence either.

Iran is just mad that this woman is part of a film that "outs" the oppressive lifestyle that is prevalent in their country. While I don't agree with the lashes, or getting punished for telling the truth, don't forget that there are countries that still use this kind of punishment. Take fore example the whole Singapore incident during the Clinton administration. If you remember, it is illegal in Singapore to deface public property (Graffiti) and that was punishable by what, 20 lashes? With wet bamboo mind you. We stepped in and interfered of course, but what right do we have. The poor local got the full 20 while the American got what, 6?
      • Joe 7 mths ago
The Singapore incident was justified, because it was breaking their law. I am all for capital punshment, because when you get it the first time you won't want to do it again.
This lady is getting 90 lashes for making a movie. It would be like arresting Jdepp for making the movie Blow, because it portrayed him doing cocaine.
      • Tuands 7 mths ago
Joe is right, it's hash but there must be law and order and to maintain that there must be punishment....not lawyer-up, thumbing nose at our justice system on our expenses like here. Also Censorship may be needed sometimes, eg. "9/11 conspiracy " film...I feel like getting stabbed, of course I wouldn't suggest to lash/jail the director but should rated it as xxx porn !

May I remind you that nowhere in Quran or any of Allah's teaching, it is said that it is permissible to beat up women or attack them with lashes. Whatever Iran does is its business, why bring relegion in to it? There are other muslim countries as well, you don't see all of them acting this way. At times, the people of the country need to rise up for themselves, as seen in Egypt previously. You shouldn't always expect others to take a stand for you.

I think thier leaders should be the ones to recieve the 90 lashes.
    • Bri  •  7 mths ago
90 lashes? My God, the poor woman will be shredded. Pray for her, no matter what religion you belong to. This is awful.

    • Rich  •  7 mths ago
i guess they're trying for a spot on the UN's human rights council
    • Susan  •  7 mths ago
I am very saddend by this. The people of Iran can't even cry out for they are overshadowed by this backwards, evil government. I am half Persian and my father's family is still in Iran, and they so much love their country, but yern for freedom to live their lives. I urge people to watch this movie called "The Stoning of Soraya M.". It's a true story and shows how horriable and evil this is!
    • Danya H  •  7 mths ago
Looks as if IRAN is living in the DARK AGES. If the government doesn't want to admit there are such goings-on in their country, they must have their heads in the sand, or are a bunch of idiots.
    • dcflores75  •  7 mths ago
Wow, She starred in a movie about the oppression of women in Iran and The Iranian Justice System just proved her point, how ironic.
    • Robert  •  7 mths ago
Let me get this straight she is going to get 90 lashes for making her country look bad? I think we have a new great example of irony
    • Carolyn  •  7 mths ago
A very unfair sentence for a very brave woman. I hope international outcry spares her this cruelty.
    • Hammudi  •  7 mths ago
Iran, THIS is why you can't have nuclear weapons...
    • John B  •  7 mths ago
Why would she return to Iran?
    • DwayneR  •  7 mths ago
This sentence imposed by Iran is much too harsh! I prayers are with this actress and her family!
If she going to recieve this kind of sentence whenever she acts in movie that Iranian officials dislike, she might as well not act!
There is simply no reason at all for this kind of punishment! I hope there is something our government can do to help her!
Meanwhile, she should consider packing her belongings and moving to another country!

We had good news , the cancer is still moving but still moving slowly so that is good news.

More proof that Iran is run by people right out of the Middle Ages. The Iranian people need to rise up ad put an end to this nonsense and have their country join the modern world and live in peace.

and some Muslims currently want Sharia Law in America, stop trying to infect our country with your beliefs, if you dont like how things are over here, go back to THE MIDDLE EAST.
