Leopard mauls 11 residents after straying into village in India

A leopard that entered the village of Prakash Nagar, in West Bengal, India Tuesday mauled 11 villagers and forest guards before it was tranquilized. It died hours later from knife wounds.

Villagers "used knives, stones and batons to beat back" the adult, male cat, as they tried vainly "to drive it back toward a wildlife sanctuary in West Bengal state," the Associated Press reported.

Such attacks are becoming more common, as the cats stray "into villages in search of food," the report said.
