Four signs the White House is worried about 2012

    By Josh Kraushaar
    National Journal

It's been a rough June for the White House. Instead of being able to run a campaign taking credit for economic improvement, President Obama will, according to the latest forecasts, be trying to win four more years amid a grim economy next year. The president's reelection team, once hoping to run on a "Morning in America" theme now doesn't have that luxury.  No wonder, the president's advisers over the past month have been making moves that suggest they're awfully concerned about his prospects:

    1. Searching for an economic message. Veteran Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg recently offered perceptive advice to the president's team by criticizing its "getting the car out of the ditch" metaphor meant to suggest the economy is slowly improving.  As Greenberg wrote: "People thought they still were in the ditch."

This is a time when the president needs to find his inner Bill Clinton, and feel Americans' pain.  If he wants to be one of the few presidents to win reelection in a stagnant economy, he'll have to devote less time to defending past policies, like the auto bailout, and more to offering specific solutions to help people get back to work. Think a 21st century version of FDR's fireside chats.

But there are few signs that the president's economic messaging has changed. Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz recently said Democrats own the economy, but they don't seem to be adapting their message to the bad economy likely to face them in November 2012.

    2. Doubling down on manufacturing. The latest White House effort to wring good news out of a bad economy focuses on successes in the manufacturing sector: the auto bailout that put GM and Chrysler on sounder footing, as well as green initiatives.

Politically, it's a puzzling message.  While there has been a small uptick in manufacturing jobs, it's hardly enough to be felt by the blue-collar electorate, who have been bearing the brunt of the recession and never viewed Obama too favorably in the first place. The latest Gallup weekly tracking poll shows Obama's approval with college graduates at 51 percent, with a 40 percent approval among nongraduates.

The president's emphasis on green jobs doesn't help. It's tough for many steelworkers to see themselves producing solar panels. Clean-energy jobs may be the future, but they're not seen by displaced workers as a panacea.

Are 'The (2012) Undecideds' In or Out?

Instead, Obama's key to winning reelection is solidifying his support with college-educated whites, a swing demographic that has been more receptive to his message, along with high turnout among minorities. His key to victory is rallying white-collar professionals in swing-state suburbs, like Fairfax/Loudoun County, Va.; Wake County, N.C.; Franklin County, Ohio; Bucks County, Pa.; Clark County, Nev.—none hotbeds of manufacturing.

    3. Fresh fundraising concerns. With a strong connection to the grassroots and expertise with social networking, President Obama's reelection team mastered the art of hitting up small donors in the 2008 campaign.

But there are telltale signs that the grassroots army that propelled him is in a much less giving mood. It's not a huge surprise; the bad economy has hit Obama's small donors too. When you're having trouble paying the bills, you're not exactly pining to pitch in hard-earned money to help a powerful president.

A sign Team Obama is looking elsewhere: A Los Angeles Times report that Obama's reelection team is already asking wealthy donors to commit the maximum $75,800 to the president's campaign funds.

How Foreign Policy Became the Issue Dividing the GOP Field

If Obama's re-election starts looking more difficult next year, donors may well be inclined to give to the Democratic Senate and House campaign arms, seeing them as the better investment.  But if they're locked in with early maximum donations to the president's re-election, that won't be doable.

    4. Raising the stakes in the upper South. Obama's strategists are raising the stakes in the two battleground upper South states, North Carolina and Virginia.

They've never been critical cogs in a presidential strategy. If Team Obama sees them as such in 2012, it suggests the campaign is struggling in states that were comfortably on its side in 2008, particularly those in the Rust Belt.

When I interviewed leading Democratic and Republican strategists about the states toughest for Obama to hold, most were pessimistic about his prospects in North Carolina, a state that he won by just 14,000 votes.

Publicly, his strategists are arguing that the Tar Heel State's growing numbers of college-educated suburbanites and minorities plays to Obama's advantage. It's no coincidence the Democrats are holding next year's convention in Charlotte.

PICTURES: Beyond Libya's Gaddafi, Other International Arrest Warrants

But if North Carolina looks like a challenge, Virginia looks within Obama's grasp. Unemployment in the Old Dominion is far lower than most battleground states, and the growth of government jobs in the Washington, D.C., suburbs and a diversifying population play to the Democrats' favor.

Not everyone on the Democratic side is as optimistic, however. One senior Democratic operative involved with key Virginia races believes Obama would need an African-American turnout close to his historic 2008 levels to win—a tough task in a down economy.

"When folks start to depend on recreating a specific snapshot in time, it is most always a disappointment," the strategist said.

881 days later Obama's message is still the same: It's all Bush's fault!
      • Kirk 11 mths ago
Bush was only responsible for 9-11 which wasn't bad. lmao
      • NancyK 10 mths ago
hey kirk, you are not very informed on facts, think for yourself, you must listen to too much left wing hate news, nobama fails reelection,ITS BUSH'S FAULT
    • Wingman  •  11 mths ago
I strongly disagree with the articles comment that "Obamie" is favored by 51% of those with college degrees. My wife and I are college grads and have several Masters degrees between us, and we sure aren't supportive of this socialist. Nor do we know any college graduates personally, who are either. Let's get real here.
      • Christopher 11 mths ago
I guess that would make you the other 49% .......wow, you must have lots of Masters degrees floating around, genius
      • Jan 11 mths ago
        Just more lib lies!
      • LinK 11 mths ago
You know, I'm a college graduate and I support him (against any of the potential Republican nominees, anyway). 51% supporting means 49% against, and you happen to be in the latter. Not that surprising.

Please tell me that 51% of "college-educated" voters aren't that stupid!!! The poll couldn't have come up with those percentages without doctoring the figures or basing it on a handful of responses, As a college-edicated American, I don't believe 90% of the polls. Since Soros controls a large part of the media and these are media-conducted polls, you can bet the percentages have been altered. I didn't vote for Obama in 2008 because I didn't believe all his "hope and change" bs and I was uncomfortable with his total lack of experience. I definitely won't vote for him in 2012.

College does not equal smart, College equals a socialist re-education camp.

Let's hope Donald and Daisy Duck, Snoopy and Goofy and all of those dead people are a little smarter too.

Hey Patti, look behind you they are comming after you, if you did'nt vote for him in 2008 then who cares, if you don't vote for him in 2012, by the way you are so a loser

Some questions for all of you Obazombies:

If you had just moved to a country where its maximum leader had:

-doubled the national debt, which had taken more than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have approved?

-then proposed to double the debt again within 10 years, would you have approved?

-criticized a state law that he admitted he never even read, would you think that he is just an ignorant hot head?

-joined the country of Mexico and sued a state in the United States to force that state to continue to allow illegal immigration, would you question his patriotism and wonder whose side he was on?

-put 87,000 workers out of work by arbitrarily placing a moratorium on offshore oil drilling on companies that have one of the best safety records of any industry because one company had an accident, would you have agreed?

-been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how inept he is on his own and that he is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes?

-spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to take Laura Bush to a play in NYC, would you have approved?

-reduced your retirement plan's holdings of GM stock by 90% and given the unions a majority stake in GM, would you have approved?

-made a joke at the expense of the Special Olympics, would you have approved?

-given the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of his speeches, would you have thought this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky?

-bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia, would you have approved?

-visited Austria and made reference to the nonexistent "Austrian language”, would you have brushed it off as a minor slip?

-filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with people who cannot seem to keep current in their income taxes, would you have approved?

-stated that there were 57 states in the United States, would you have said that he is clueless?

-flown all the way to Denmark to make a five minute speech about how the Olympics would benefit him walking out his front door in Texas, would you have thought he was a self-important, conceited, egotistical jerk?

-been so Spanish-illiterate as to refer to "Cinco de Cuatro" in front of the Mexican ambassador when it was the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo), and continued to flub it when he tried again, would you have winced in embarrassment?

-misspelled the word "advice" would you have hammered him for it for years like Dan Quayle and ‘potatoe’ as proof of what a dunce he is?

-burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go plant a single tree on Earth Day, would you have concluded he's a hypocrite?

-OK’d Air Force One flying low over millions of people followed by a jet fighter in downtown Manhattan causing widespread panic, would you have wondered whether they actually get what happened on 9-11?

-failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans, would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence?

-created positions for 32 Czars who report directly to him, bypassing the House and Senate on much of what is happening in America, would you have approved?

-pronounced Marine ‘Corps’ like Marine ‘Corpse’, would you think him an idiot?

Obazombies: every act described in the questions above is factual and directly attributable to Barrack Hussein Ubammah. So, tell me again, what is it about Ubammah that makes him so brilliant and impressive? Can you think of anything to explain these actions of your feckless Kenyan stooge?

I thought not. Next election, if you still cannot recognize the damage you have done to America, do the rest of the country a favor and stay home!!!!
      • David 11 mths ago
sorry, how can anyone take you seriously as you END claiming evrything was factual yet your FIRST 'fact' was actually false. Obama didn't double the debt. It's gone from 10.x to 14.x. The fact is, BUSH II close to doubled the debt (5.x to 10.x). To Bush's 'credit' that was 'only' a 5T increase in EIGHT years where as Obama has almost matched that in less than 3.

Hmm, seems the only thing stopping HIM is the debt ceiling .. and the libs are convinced it HAS to be raised .. in effect giving Obama the go ahead on spending more.

        Hey. we're F'ed

I'd get after my congressmen and senators to strenghten the borders and demand identification to vote to work and to collect food stamps. And I would triple fines for any business hiring illegals.
      • James 11 mths ago
Okay pick a better country, or better yet pick a better leader! Just as I thought all complaints and no solutions. How typical!
    • Jason  •  11 mths ago
I almost passed out when I saw an article posted on Yahoo (of all places) that actually criticized Obama. Obama is banking on two things to win.....1) A corrupt media, that's in the tank for him (like Yahoo) 2). Voter fraud
      • Brandon 11 mths ago
I am not gay, Jason; but I love you for your comment. Seeing something on Yahoo that criticizes obama is like seeing a living dinosaur.
    • Duke of Earl  •  11 mths ago
what is Obama going to run on, he screwed up everything he touches.
    • Norm  •  11 mths ago
I don't know why everyone is angry at the Democrats. They haven't done anything.
    • KonaGolden  •  11 mths ago
If you voted for Obama in 2008 to prove you're not a racist, vote for someone else in 2012 to prove you're not an idiot.

True enough;...We absolutely need to get our jobs back but to be fair about it we need to examine the forces driving them away in the first place..I agree with the view that too much of the wrong kind of government regulation is one culprit;...One of the least talked about of these regulatory programs is Affirmative Action which makes it risky to fire someone even if termination is justified..Employers need to be able to hire, retain, and promote the best employees.By moving operations overseas they don't have to worry about the potential financial burden created by enormous civil suit payouts handed up by America's politically correct justice system(Affirmative Action,by the way,is the seed of Political Correctness;..And Political Correctness is a cancer which is slowly destroying America;...One more reason to end Affirmative Action) Another problem I see with Affirmative Action is inherent in the practice of upholding the " Right to Work" for some groups/individuals and not everyone .This practice is divisive but it also does something else:...Those with the right to work develop a very negative ,classist attitude towards those who don't have the same status;...All this creates a workforce in made up of people who don't work as well with one another as they could .THere are other reasons why we should end Affirmative Action but It's time for dinner so good night.

      Obama lost 3,000,000 jobs 2008-2010
Yet he claimed in he created more jobs in 2010 than Bush did in 8 years.
Bush lost 673,000 jobs mostly in 2007.
      Obama gained 847,000 in 2010
Subtract the 847,000 he gained from the 3,000,000 he lost = -2,126,000
Their No.1 fear is having their lies exposed.

Libya was no threat to any other country, and no one was trying to wipe out people in a genocide type of situation. It was strictly a political fight that developed into a civil war.
Any government has to be able to put down rebellions, or the entire world would be in chaos as world leaders would have to step down when a protest breaks out, even if it were by a minority group causing violence.
The ICC should never be putting out arrest warrants for anyone in Libya, and no other countries should have gotten involved there. Kadhafi may have been killing some of his own citizens in his attempt to restore order, but he was the legitimate government of Libya, and he belongs there. Now the US and NATO are there killing people, after siding with the rebels, and we and NATO do not belong there.
We had a civil war, and it would have lasted many more years, killing countless more people, had 30 other countries gotten involved and sided with the rebels, and the Hague would have put out a warrant for the arrest of Abraham Lincoln. Our entire country would have been devastated, and we would have never been a great nation.
Our people would have never accepted a new government that was chosen and backed by foreign nations, and the people of Libya won't either, so this war will never bring freedom and democracy to Libya.
All we are going to do, is make ourselves enemies by telling others how to govern themselves, and everyone we kill, whether they are soldiers or civilians, they have families and friends that would kill Americans if they could, and they do not have weapons that can touch ours, so terrorism will be their only option, and it won't matter whether they kill our soldiers or civilians, including women and children, because we did in their country.
They will be labeled as radical Islamist terrorists when they do kill Americans, but they see themselves as patriots avenging the deaths of their friends, family, and countrymen, and that they are doing what is right and just. Every day we are there, we are making more recruits for Al Qaida, and when Americans are killed, Obama is to blame and it should not be forgotten.
I hope the Senate acts to stop the madness that Obama has started, so that Libya knows that it was not an evil empire that has had them living in terror as our missiles rained down on them, but the decision of an evil man named Obama that caused that to happen, and it was stopped because he broke our laws when he did it.
Obama says that what we are doing is not hostilities on an ongoing basis? Ask a Libyan how they sleep at night, as they see their country being destroyed before their eyes, as we try to assassinate their leader, and killed three of his grandchildren in one attack on his residence. I'm sure that we won't be getting any thank you cards in the mail, and that they are not feeling our love for humanity.
The arrest warrant with Kadhafi's name on it should have the name erased and replaced with the name of Barrack Obama.

The GOP ran on we need jobs in 2010 that's our number one priority. The won the house.
Where's the jobs bill?? Where's their plan for creating jobs?? Face the facts they lied to get you votes and you fell for it. Now your going to vote for them again. I think you need psychological help. Insanity is performing the same exact experiment and expecting different results.

With the exception of Dr Ron Paul, there is not a true Republican in the whole monkey troop of neoconservitive pongids. After the Neocons hijacked the 96 election and ran their version of McCain, Beltway Bob Dole, most of the real republicans left the party, as the huge anti-Free Trade movement, which crossed party lines, would have handed Clinton and his Communist Chinese handlers, a one way ticket back to Arkansas and Beijing if they ran a real candidate, not a DC insider stiff. The GOP handed Clinton the presidency like they did Obama with McCain. GOP, just the fabian fake Neocon "Right" opposition.
