The Fast Fix: Can Obama keep the presidency?

President Obama will have a tough time in the 2012 election with the country's economic problems looming overhead.

Dark clouds have been gathering around President Obama for months now as the still struggling economy threatens to imperil his chances at winning a second term next year.

But, there's evidence that a silver lining might be emerging for the president in the form on the jobs plan he introduced last week.

A Gallup poll released this week showed 45 percent of people support the jobs act while 32 percent oppose it.  A CNN survey pegged support at 43 percent and opposition at 38 percent.

Those aren't exactly sky-high numbers but for a president who hasn't been on the right side of 50 percent in terms of job approval in months, it's welcome news.

Of course, Obama hasn't even formally submitted the bill to Congress.  Which means that the fight for public perception about it is in its infant stages. And, as we know from the health care legislation, sometimes bills that start out popular wind up significantly less so.

Still the public's initial optimism about the legislation gives President Obama an opening to take the fight to Republicans in Congress, urging them to pass something that average people want. Obama has been doing just that in recent days with trips to swing states like Ohio and North California.

For a White House that been playing defense, the jobs bill is a chance to go back on offense.  And we all know the best defense is a good offense.

There are several reasons that Barack Obama has a very low low approval rating. It is understandable as the youngest American president elected, he would have inexperience and amateurish decision making because of his age and lack of executive life experiences as a former senator background, but he made careless mistakes and mismanaged moves in selecting his close advisors.

Mr. Obama’s first move was to retain Bill Clinton as a close advisor. Bill Clinton was a former impeached president for lying to a court of law and accused of election fraud in Missouri as well as accusations of the former president seeing prostitutes with numerous infidelities towards his wife Hillary Clinton, the current Secretary of State.

Mr. Obama’s second move was continuing the services of Defense Secretary Robert Gates from the George W. Bush Administration instead selecting his own Defense Secretary. The death of Osama and the war with Libya side-by-side with NATO was still a Bush the son operation since Defense Secretary Gates was running the show.

Mr. Obama can brag he is some kind of American President and Commander in Chief, but the world knows differently.

Under the law of unintended consequences, the combination of Obama's permanent income tax increase, the millionaire's tax, and the corporate jet depreciation change plan (which was reauthorized by Obama's own stimulus bill) should finish off the remaining struggling U.S. general aviation and luxury boatbuilding companies just emerging from the recession - Brazil, the European Union, and China will happily take over these markets - and lay off their highly-paid (mostly union) employees, causing further damage to the weak U.S. economy from the loss of wages and tax revenues. Obama's plan to tax municipal tax-exempt bond purchasers with incomes over $200,000 will affect no less than 49% of all muni bond purchases, causing the pool of interested buyers to drop dramatically and forcing bond issuers to raise interest rates, thus substantially increasing borrowing costs to state and local governments and resulting in fewer school, public works, and infrastructure projects being funded (effectively canceling the benefit of the administration's one-time spending bonus to retain teacher positions). The rich do not passively accept large increases in taxation, but radically change their asset allocations instead - taking reduced salaries in exchange for incentive stock options and other perks, abandoning formerly tax-advantaged capital gains assets, reclassifying assets as corporate assets, and/or placing their assets in tax-free or tax-deferred instruments such as insurance trusts, pass-through trusts, or partnerships. Those wealthy individuals that cannot totally avoid the increase in income taxes invariably respond by cutting down on spending and purchasing fewer luxury goods and services.

This is the most realistic and intelligent comment I have seen on here in some time.
      • A 8 mths ago
        Agree -

Obama knows the wealthy will not 'passively accept large increases in taxation' and will change their allocations - he is by his own definition one of the wealthy. And none of his pandering rhetoric on 'tax the rich' ( in place of an empty agenda) will change the current economic situation or his own economic fortunes. He's doing nothing to simplify and make the tax code fairer and will simply structure his wealth as the rest of his wealthy and wealthier friends. He's hoping to exploit the population's frustration on the lack of direction and progress by appointing a group on to which to vent anger ( instead of on his own leadership failures or introducing and explaining solutions for the problems).

This is classic 'divide and conquer' politics - Obama and the Dems have returned to this 'classic' positioning because they have nothing to offer, the same as had/has been done by Republican candidates pandering to the religious...

Leaders who unify with pragmatism, confidence and a clearly communicated sense of direction is what this country needs.... not one who divides and blames.

Anyone is welcome to suggest compromises in the bill's numbers but the only thing I ever hear is no (or Hell no).

Never heard of the state of North California! They must be so crucial to presidential elections that they aren't even mentioned on maps!

Yeah, Fred. North California. That's one of Obama's 58 states.

A top east-coast professor observed that Bush practised kidnapped and tortured while Obama killed without even trial and spent tax$$$ undercover to these dirty job. Any realization or evidence of his Cairo speech that won him Nobel Peace Prize? The west coast may be more liberal but things added up and people are losing patience with the good speaking president who is perceived to be weak rather than giving good speeches and doing something that are not reported in the media, or someone who said he wants peace in middle peace but treatened to veto against the wishes of majority of the people of the world. America needs to wake up and reflect upon her behavior in the world stage. Is our American president free to act and do the right things for the citizens of America long term and in accordance to the Constitutions of America? A report said US 'spopularity or image was ranked # 42 (?) in the world, why ? At least, we have not heard US was among the most admired or respected nations on earth for a long time...

Temporary boosts in job placement at the expense of billions of dollars more of debt will not make our economy or jobs better.

This does little to effect the other side of the equation which is that this is a general and long term downgrade of world spending and the process of Obama's government wasting money that we don't have, won't improve this retraction. In fact it damages us because it gives us higher debt service at a time when tax income will continue to decline.

The Keynesian model often referred to by many liberals as the saving grace after the last World Depression in the 1930's had a very different effect because the base modeling issues were different. The world had nearly stopped and the goods and services side of the world economies desperately needed more products and services. Demand was pent up because the world had stopped and supplies were unavailable.

Over the last twenty to thirty years, we have become a bloated society that consumes much too much, (with mostly borrowed monies) and a society which produces little or nothing.

The World supply side is glutted and we no longer have the monies or the credit to buy more. It will take some time to balance out and for us to get in a position that makes Keynesian models work. Great pain will come before that happens.

We scream in hate at other trying to manage our excesses because we are having withdrawal symptoms from our own gluttony.

This is not to say that Voodoo or trickle down economics works any better. We are seeing the rich hold their billions because they don't like the investment vehicle that is is the USA. If they invest, they invest elsewhere in the world.

Money does not trickle down it actually jets upward. Increasing taxes on the wealthy only marginally makes the USA a worse investment vehicle.

The crippling of US labor with the 70's "capital over labor" mantra is also a leading cause of our destruction. The stock market continues to destroy labor by rewarding lean management techniques and labor reductions. We still blindly lend these companies our hard earned retirement monies-we trade our jobs for a few percentages of interest payments or stock price increases.

We must control access to our market through focused tariffs against exploited labor that is producing goods and services. We also must give huge tax breaks to American and other international companies that make long term jobs here.

With all of these international labor treaties between countries (signed by both parties), that is getting so much more difficult to do.

    • loveanimals  •  8 mths ago
You want to fix the economy? Buy American goods only. Easy to buy cheap products. Quit buying things made in other countries and support American made products only. You will see the economy grow and new job creations.

Sorry but its time for "all" of America to have a president represent them.

Dems and Repubs are basically the same. Let the gov take care of the people. Everyone deserves a house even if they cant. Soon to be everyone deserves to go to college even if there will not be enough jobs to support the spending. That bubble has yet to burst. Real change is the only answer. Not more spending. We have tried that for about 30 years so far. Thing is the gov covers its tracks and lies and changes the statistics to make it look far better than its is. Like Only 10% unemployment, when its more like 20 . They don't include the people that completely gave of looking, etc. Inflation only 1.2% this year. What a great job they have done. Who cost of living went up 1.2%, no ones. More like 5-10 a year for the last 10. The #$%$ up is exponentially getting worse.
