It’s a new year and whether that means you’re in the middle of a career change, seeking a promotion at work or debating starting a new business, Laura Fredricks, author, speaker and the Expert on The Ask sits down with Katie as she talks about the top “New Year, New You” questions you need to be asking!

Laura says she has the ability to show people how to ask the right questions using the right words so that they can get exactly what they want.

For over 20 years, Laura Fredricks has applied her practical and successful background in law, business and communications to raise millions of dollars for nonprofits by teaching the ways of The Ask. Her expertise has been featured in Shape, SELF, the Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones, and ABC.

Some of her ‘asks’ have led her to various successful career paths all because she asked the right questions.

For example, her career took off when she was an attorney and winning her defense cases as a result of asking the witnesses the right questions. She eventually transitioned to philanthropy and used her skills to ask for significant gifts, raising millions of dollars for nonprofits.

According to Laura, people don’t ask for what they want because they assume they’ll hear a “no,” so they just don’t bother.

“They think that it may hurt the personal or professional relationship – especially if the ask is for money,” says Laura. “They anticipate that the response may be, “no,” “I can’t,” “I don’t want to,” and they talk themselves out of their ask.”

But when you do have the courage to ask, where do you begin?

Laura advises the following, regardless if you’re asking for a raise, more time off, or a new title:

- Start with a sentence that states why this is important for you.

- State in quantifiable terms exactly what you want.

- End with the reasons why you are making this ask and, if possible, an inclusive solution such as, “we can work this out,” “I’m sure we can come to an agreement.”
