David Bowie to Revisit Iconic Role in 'Lazarus'

Over the years, David Bowie has constantly re-invented himself — through both his music and his style — and has rarely repeated the same trick twice. However, he will soon be revisiting an early, iconic role in an upcoming new play.

The production is called Lazarus and is based on the novel The Man Who Fell to Earth, which famously starred Bowie in its 1976 film adaptation. The original sci-fi cult classic featured Bowie playing an alien; however, the singer will only be working backstage on Lazarus. In addition to co-writing the piece, Bowie will also contribute new songs and re-arrange older ones.

Which begs the question: Is Lazarus a play, or a musical? The New York Times seemed uncertain in reporting on the production, stating "All that's sure is David Bowie is involved."

Even James C. Nicola, the artistic director of the New York Theater Workshop, where it will premiere, seemed to agree: "It’s going to be a play with characters and songs — I’m calling it music theater, but I don’t really know what it’s going to be like.”

Nicola added that the project has been in secret development for some time. Bowie himself declined to comment.

At any rate -- play, musical, whatever it may be, Lazarus is scheduled to open in New York this winter.

While you're waiting for Lazarus, there's no need to deprive yourself of music in the meantime.
