For the first time in history, there were more minority children born in the United States than white, according to 2011 census data released on Thursday.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 50.4 percent of children born in a 12-month period that ended July 2011 were Hispanic, black, Asian-American or from other minorities groups, while non-Hispanic whites accounted for 49.6 percent of all births in that span. In 2010, minority babies accounted for 49.5 percent of all births.

Overall, minorities in the U.S. increased 1.9 percent to 114 million, or 36.6 percent of the total U.S. population. But with the weak economy resulting in fewer Hispanics entering the U.S., demographers project that the tipping point when minorities become the majority in America may not happen as early as some predicted. After the 2010 census, experts suggested it could happen by 2040.

The census report signals "the dawn of an era in which whites no longer will be in the majority," the Washington Post said.

"Such a turn has been long expected," the New York Times noted, "but no one was certain when the moment would arrive--signaling a milestone for a nation whose government was founded by white Europeans and has wrestled mightily with issues of race, from the days of slavery, through a civil war, bitter civil rights battles and, most recently, highly charged debates over efforts to restrict immigration."

    • Mary Kennedy, the estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was found dead at her New York home on Wednesday, reports the Associated Press.

Westchester County executive's office spokesman Ned McCormack says an autopsy will be conducted on Thursday. He cannot speculate on the cause of death until then.

The Bedford, N.Y., police department said that at approximately 1:36 p.m.it responded to a call about a deceased individual found at the Kennedys' home. They are investigating an "unattended death."

After 16 years of marriage, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. filed for divorce from Mary Kennedy in May 2010. They have four children. It was Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s second marriage.

Mary Kennedy struggled with drug and alcohol problems, according to the AP. She was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, and her license was also suspended when she was found driving under the influence of alcohol.  Both incidents happened around the time of her divorce.

A spokesperson for Mary Kennedy's family released a statement, saying, "We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her. Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation. We have no further comment at this time."

An unnamed source told Radaronline.com that Mary committed suicide. That information has not been confirmed.

Robert F. Kennedy  Jr. is reportedly currently dating actress Cheryl Hines. He is the son of former Sen. Robert Kennedy and the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy.

    • A group of religious leaders testifying before Congress about the birth control mandate in February. (Carolyn  …The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops reiterated its threat to sue the Obama administration over its rule that all employers must offer contraception without a copay in their insurance plans.

Churches and other organizations that mainly employ and serve people of one religion are exempt from the rule, but the bishops say religiously affiliated hospitals, schools and other organizations should also be exempt. In February, President Barack Obama announced an "accommodation"—that insurance companies would offer the contraception coverage directly to employees, so that employers wouldn't have to violate their conscience by being a middleman in the exchange. Later, the administration said third-party companies would offer the birth control coverage, and that religious schools with self-insured plans would be exempt from the contraception requirement.

In a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services, the bishops' conference rejected President Obama's accommodation, asserting that religiously affiliated employers will be forced to drop insurance for its employees entirely in order to avoid violating their beliefs that contraception and sterilization are wrong.

At least one religious school is making good on the threat. The Franciscan University of Steubenville, a small Catholic college in Ohio, announced Tuesday that it will drop coverage for students entirely rather than "violate the consistent teachings of the Catholic Church on the sacredness of human life," Reuters reported. The change will affect 200 out of the school's 2,500 students, although with its overwhelmingly Catholic student body—the university has been called "The Most Catholic University in the World"—the Franciscan University would likely fall into the category of exempt employers. Some other Catholic and evangelical schools are suing over the mandate and have threatened to drop health coverage. (It's possible that the Supreme Court will announce next month that it has struck down the health care law altogether, which would make such suits unnecessary.)

    • After 40 years of silence, a former California Highway Patrol officer says he knows the identity of the Zodiac killer.

In his book, "The Zodiac Killer Cover-up," Lyndon Lafferty, 79, says the serial killer is a 91-year-old recovering alcoholic who is living in Fairfield, Calif., outside of Napa Valley. He chooses not to ID the man.

Lafferty is hardly the first to claim he knows who the killer is. At least two other books and two TV programs have profiled other alleged suspects. But none of the claims have ever been substantiated.

Lafferty says the killer's rage was driven by an adulterous wife. According to him, the case was covered up by law enforcement agencies and an unnamed judge who Lafferty says was having an affair with the killer's wife.

    • The FBI has opened a probe into JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s $2 billion trading loss, several media sites are reporting.

The Los Angeles Times reported this from an anonymous source:

"We are aware of the matter and are looking into it," said a Justice Department official who has been briefed on the probe but was not authorized to speak publicly. "This is a preliminary look at what if anything might have taken place."

The inquiry by the FBI's financial crimes squad in New York is in a "preliminary infancy stage," the official said Tuesday, and federal law enforcement agents are pursuing the matter "because of the company and the dollar amounts involved here."

The major banking institution reported an approximately $2 billion loss because of a "flawed, complex, poorly reviewed, poorly executed and poorly monitored" derivatives trading strategy through the bank's Chief Investment Office, a London-based unit of the bank.

Meanwhile, shareholders backed embattled Chief Executive Jamie Dimon at the bank's annual shareholders meeting in Florida on Tuesday, voting against a proposal to split the CEO and chairman roles, Reuters reported.

The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Reserve have also said they were looking into the bets that led to the huge loss.
