Bay Area woman trapped in airport for eight days–all for lack of a $60 baggage fee

Sure, hurricanes and unseasonal blizzards can create major delays in air travel. And the ordinary air traveler faces plenty of exasperation via the heightened, and not always rational, security measures of the Transportation Safety Administration.

But Terri Weissinger, a native of Sonoma County, Calif., has suffered a new scale of airport indignity: Seeking to start a new life in Idaho, Weissinger was condemned to eight days in the limbo of the San Francisco International Airport--because she was unable to pay the fee her airline assessed for an additional piece of checked baggage.

As Michael Finney, a correspondent with the local ABC news affiliate KGO, reports, Weissinger "was broke" when she left for the airport. (You can watch Finney's report in the video clip above.)

"She had nothing but an airline ticket and $30 in her pocket," Finney notes. She also hadn't traveled by air in the last five years--meaning that when she stepped to the ticket counter to check her bags, she was in for a serious case of sticker shock. The U.S. Airways agent checking her in told her that it would cost $60 to check both her bags. Weissinger offered to pay the fee when she arrived in Idaho, but the agent declined. She also offered to leave one bag there at the San Francisco Airport. That, the agent explained, would be in violation of security regulations.

Weissigner's next move was to try to scare up the full fee by calling friends in the area. She came up empty, and by the time she'd finished working the phones, she missed her flight. That's when things started to get truly Kafka-esque. To get a new flight "she'd have to pay her bag fees plus $150 in change fees," Finney notes. Without a place to stay nearby, Weissinger stayed the night at the airport. She awoke to more bad news: U.S. Airlines explained that, since she couldn't pay a change fee, she'd have to book a new flight from scratch. That would run about $1,000.

For the next week, Weissinger could do nothing but wander up and down the San Francisco air terminal. At one point, she says, she was treated for anxiety at the terminal's medical clinic; when she sought police assistance, she reports, she was nearly brought in on vagrancy charges. Her ordeal stretched out over eight days--and it only came to an end with the generous assistance of parishioners at a chapel called "The Airport Church of Christ." They gave her $210 that covered the original fee arrangement that Weissinger was able to restore with U.S. Air--the $150 change fee together with the $60 to check her bags.

Weissinger says that she never saw any baggage fee notification when she booked her flight on the online travel service Orbitz--nor did her travel itinerary carry any such notification. There is, however, one small silver lining in this whole grim Tom Hanks-style saga: Weissinger was traveling in April, and since then, federal rules have forced online travel services and airline reservation sites to feature prominent notification of baggage fees prior to booking a flight. As for U.S. Airways, an airline representative told Finney that "We have apologized to Ms. Weissinger, but unfortunately are unable to offer a refund. When you purchase a non-refundable ticket, you accept the terms and conditions. If a passenger cannot travel with their bags, they need to make other arrangements."

Translation: An apology from U.S. Airways and $60 will get you two checked bags.

It's either very sad or very fishy that none of her friends could either come get her or loan her $30. I'm no social butterfly, but I'm pretty confident SOMEBODY would help me out. I think there's more to this story.

Her mistake was flying US Airways.

And booking through an online travel agency (ie. orbitz) When you do that.. which is a good idea if you don't know which carrier can take you where you want to go... Call the airline you just booked on to verify info and not be surprised at the counter. This is common sense especially if you haven't travelled by air in 5 ys.
      • Warren W 6 mths ago
No her mistake was NOT doing her research before she booked her flight. This is NOT the fault of the airline or the airport. This is HER fault.

And DELTA is known as Doesn't Ever Leave the Airport. It sure isn't saying much about US airlines.

Every airline I've flown with in the past year is lacking in serious ways. For one, their cabins always seem old and run down. They all equally suck. Then, there's the rude staff at the ticket counter. Why do they seem to LOVE saying "No"??? They get off on being as unaccommodating as they can get away with. I could go on and on.

I fly all over the world and have found that my own country's airlines (American, United, Delta, etc) are the absolute worst in the world excepting Southwest. If you are fly overseas, contact the overseas airlines or a foreign travel agent in the country you are traveling to. European airlines are better than our US airlines but Asian airlines are by far the best, offering great service at lower prices. It is really a shame considering it was the old US airlines (Pan Am and TWA) that really made flying a great way to travel. But their descendants are destroying that. Shame on them.

It's cheaper for me to fly roundtrip from LAX to Gatwick (London) then it is to fly from LAX to Portland. And both BA and Virgin are excellent airlines. But for domestic flying, with Southwest you get what you pay for with no surprises. And on short hops, that's all I want.
      • DouglasC 6 mths ago
Amen to that. Love flying JAL and Vietnam Air.

I never thought it was a big deal seeing all those southwest airlines commercials about checking bags for free and no change fees but I guess I never realized how ruthless other airlines are.

US Air is the worst airline in the country. They purposefully overbook, then they always board early and pull away from the gate PRIOR to boarding time! They are rude and snotty. I will drive an extra hour +, to fly Southwest, instead of US Air.
    • IT'S TOO LATE  •  6 mths ago
Sowthwest Air Dec.1; RIGHT NOW. SF. to Boise - $124.00 and no fees like this. US Air $334.71 + those fees. Just say'n.

Yea US Airways is famous for all there quirks! I use to be a regular with them until they literally left me at an airport in Canada - no one at the counter to check you in and there operators are telling me the ticket desk is open and someone should be there.......well there was no one there and I missed my flight - sent an email to US Airways because I was a frequent flyer - Never got an answer from them or even a kiss my buttt. So I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN.

I will only fly Southwest. Another airline charged us $120 for bags and the charges were not on the itinerary. Rip off.

As an afterthought...It's a little disappointing that not a single one of her "friends" or "family members" could have loaned her any portion of thirty dollars to just pay the fee so she could move on.

I need to see it, feel it....to give me hope that humans will find a way towards a future that gives a damm about more than themselves and how many benjamins they have in their wallet....
